This is definitely one of the Mount Rushmore of Tool songs. It pretty much has all the elements of their evolution up to the release of Aenima. It may not hit on the first listen, as with many of Tools songs, but it is one that does grow on you with each listen. Put the headphones on, turn the lights off, and go along for the ride!

I think, this being the final track of the album, by the time you get to it you're in a certain state of mind that makes you more receptive to it and it makes sense more as the release at the end of the album than a standalone song.
Tool occasionally have gag tracks, intermissions, etc, that I wouldn't consider to be 'songs'.

"I think this is my least favorite Tool song."
Interesting. Third Eye is my absolute favorite Tool song. Not their best IMO, but still my favorite. So many layers, so trippy, I float out of my body listening to it and I enjoy that. Maybe revisit the song a year from now? Not in a reaction context. You might be surprised.
+1 for your honesty, nothing wrong with it.

Adams tone and sound on that last short of “solo” is outstanding to me. They dedicated this album to comedian Bill Hicks, Maynard’s favorite comedian. That’s what the sound clips where in the beginning. Third eye 👁 is a very trippy ride to sums up the entire anemia album. One the best albums of all time

This is one of those songs that took me a couple years to appreciate. There was a time that I started to delve into my shadow work and when I heard this song and was open to it... it popped a plug in my brain and it all started making sense and the song became beautiful and melodic in its chaos. You may never like this song, but revisit it once a year when you feel that your mind and body feel like a stranger to you.

I'm one of those few that loves every Tool track ever released. Yes that includes the 6+ minute track that was a frustrating Municipal Court phone call. I personally love Third Eye simply because it paints a series of moving pictures in my mind. Next time you listen to a Tool song think of it like a movie playing in your head. Overall my best advice in general is to let yourself dive into your emotions/imaginatory state more when you play music especially when listening to Tool.

Bill Hicks was a comedian who passed away in 1994. His style consisted of dark humor, mainly surrounding controversial topics like religion and philosophy, just like Tool - so they dedicated Ænima to him. An illustration of Hicks dressed as a doctor appears on the inner cover of the album with the line, "Another dead hero."
The comedian's speeches "One Good Drug Story" and "The War on Drugs" were sampled on the album before the song "Third Eye." Hicks had used the phrase "third eye" before when talking on psychedelic mushrooms.

I like to think of this as the final boss of tool songs lol. I also found this too weird the first few listens and would often skip it. But after 10 years of still listening to tool, it's morphed into one of my faves 😂. I don't know how to explain it but after listening to the album's all the way through they all put you in a certain state of mind. What's incredible to me still is how dense and intricate each of their songs are. They're like other worlds that you can keep discovering and appreciating from new angles.

It's a slow burn but pretty soon you'll know what to expect and catch the groove... then every time you hear it you'll notice something new that will make your spine tingle. Trust me... you will grow to fking love it 🤘🤘🤘 PS. Adam's guitar at the end sounds like the voice of the eye responding to Maynard... it's a sweet little ditty

I might weigh in on the order you're experiencing Tool in. From growing up with this band this album was a pivotal experience, and unlike anything we'd heard before. This album holds a special place for me, and all the songs on it are not only amazing, but hold a lot of nostalgia.
I feel this is a key component, specifically with this song, which may be why you're not necessarily a fan.
This was an example, though we didn't know it, of the future trajectory of Tool. It has all the heavy drops, builds, timing, balance of silence accentuating the screams, and all the other genius this band would develop over the next 20 years.
This album specifically has just a little bit of edge that's slowly been polished off over time that I often go back for.
As you said, not everyone will like every song, bit just a little context to why I enjoy it.

I didnt like this song but then I started to get it. It feels like a conversation between a father and a son. And the father would be union with the universe. And the son thinking the father is running away but he wasnt.

In some ways this is not supposed to be an "enjoyable" song to listen too. In some ways, this isn't even really a song...so much as an attempt to create the sonic equivalent of certain drug induced experiences. Its a masterpiece for certain, but also not something that one can listen to frequently. Its rough, raw, disjointed, unsettling, insane, and challenging. But there's also a primal beauty, and perspective, and mystery to it. Even as a die hard Tool fan since, you guessed it, '92, I don't listen to Third Eye often, but if you asked me to list my top 5 Tool tracks, it may take that 5th spot, and without a doubt in my top 10. It takes some time and many listens over that time to really situate yourself within the soundscape of Third Eye and appreciate it all that its doing.

I'm a huge TOOL fan but I can still appreciate you not digging the song completely. I honestly didn't really vibe with it for like 15 years or so, but I've really warmed up to it lately. They could cut out like 10 of the "prying open my third eye" parts and it wouldn't hurt

Nothing wrong with having a least favorite Tool song. At least you're honest and not just showering praise when you don't feel the song. I know I'm gonna get shit on for saying this but it's one if my least favourites and I've been a fan since their debut. I can appreciate the story behind it and the composition and give them both due respect. Just not my cup of tea. Thanks for keeping it real, lotsa reactors out there who do not.

17:15 you don't need to do anything about fibbonachi or whatever rhythm beat sequence. Viewers don't watch "first time reaction" vids to get an in-depth analysis about the complex timings and shit.

@@SeanStaxxMusic well worth it...I'm also thinking about your earlier comments on Pushit. That song was the same for me. I used to skip them when I was listening to this on cassette 🤣 now they are both near the top of my list.

I'd be so happy if you listened to Reflection. I've never been moved by a song and it's lyrics like that one.

And for Third Eye, to me it's a trip relived in musical form. You see things and then the trip gets wild with the chaotic guitar. Then the mid section with the "in, out, in, out" before it gets very quiet is like breathing to snap out of it and the blissful part of the trip happens again.. if you've ever done psychedelic's, a common theme is it comes in waves. And I feel this song is just wave after wave of chaos, and I love it.

You missed nothing. it's the hardest song on the album to like. it takes multiple listens to fully appreciate it, and even now (after being a Tool fan since Undertow) I skip it if i'm not in the right mood. When i'm in the right mood and can sink myself into the song it's one of the greatest experiences on the album.

Don’t think anyone likes these deep tracks on their first listen. Would love to see your 10th listen reaction in a year or two. The prying open part doesn’t sound nice at all and that feeling of nails ona chalk board is the point tho to create the dynamic tension. This one has no release at the end which keeps you coming back for more. It’s like “is that it?” The release is in the middle, so you keep going for loops, and the line repeats over and over. Each time going deeper. Like long meditation or a mantra chant. Trying to force enlightenment, which of course cannot be forced. Hope that makes sense.

i kind of understand where you're going with your review: as a stand-alone song, this is not an easy listen. it is a tripped out mess of a jam which gives very little sense of cohesion, and few threads for the first-time listener to grasp onto. for me it was and is the perfect end to one of the greatest albums ever made. eye would recommend trying the live version from Salival at some point. because it is live, it instantly has the cohesion this version seems to lack (but then once you've heard the live version you realise what a tripped out mess of a jam it's supposed to be and the world corrects its spin).
