I’m sold. I’ve been replacing a lot of my tools with grizzly. I just bought their 40th anniversary 2hp 17” bandsaw for my shop. Every time I use it I have a smile on my face….lol

    Hi Mike,
I'm someone much like you that loves his vintage tools ... especially my planes, chisels and perfect handle screwdrivers, and have perfected my routines to make them beautiful and useful again. Also like you, I have tried every manual way to try and create a new primary bevel in all of them, and the time it requires is insane. I have to admit, the fitness of my arms and hands has increased substantially, but at our age, that may be a finite resource.
Thanks much for doing this review and being candid about how well it does for your uses. It just so happens that there are a lot of us out there with the same requirements that you have and this just saved me a lot of time and money to correct the problem that I've fought for years. Thanks for taking the time to do this video, it really is worth your efforts to us ... cheers and good health to you and yours. Cheers, Dave

I am most impressed with the fact that you have quality tools, but you care for them in the manner in which they deserve. Life lesson when you have something special...take care of it.

Sir, you are a pleasure to watch. Coming from me, who I am giving a real hard time to most you-tubers for how the talk, and act, means a lot; trust me! Also, I love the fact that you're not asking for subscribing and liking, even before the person knows if he/she will like it or not... Thank you for that and know that I did like it and I subscribed. I'm a tool nerd myself and I appreciate 100% your way of treating tools, which is very similar to mine. Enjoy your retirement for as long as you wish and don't stop making enjoyable videos.

    Hi Mike
I'm Canadian and have owned a Tormek for many years. Bought it when they first came out. It has served me well. The only disadvantage was the price. At the time, as an introductory special they included all the attachments Tormek made, so I bought. Let me say this to you and your watchers. From what I just observed you doing on your Grizzly, it should grind just as well as my Tormek and for a great deal less expensive... 1/3 the price! I'm sure your 'You Tube' presentation will benefit many people. Nicely done!

Great review!! I am retired like you so $ budget also. I have an older version of the Grizzly 10" also & here's what I found vs Tormack. 1. Support rod/tooling guide rod O.D. is the same as Tormack -- 12 m/m so all Tormack tooling will work on the Grizzzly ---- better quality, more choices, ex. your plane holder guide bushings --- check Tormack's --- note the difference. 2. Stone O.D. surface finish 225 vs Tormack 220(?)/1000. Is gotten by using Tormack Grading stone. Again will work on Grizzly stone also. 3. Guide Adjustment Nut --- CAN'T SWAP GUIDE RODS FOR TORMACK'S !!! CENTERLINE SPACING BETWEEN RODS IS DIFFERENT!!!!!!!!!! BUT INSIDE ROD CAN BE THREADED FOR A NUT TO DO THE SAME THING. It also can be tapped on the end for end stop with a 6 m/m bolt to act as end stop for tooling so you don't go off the end. 4. I think shaft O.D.. 's for the stone is the same -- so you could use replacement Tormack stones if you wanted to ---- again more choices BUT MORE $. 5. All Tormack Angle Gages, hone paste, will also work. This also includes Tormack truing diamond tool.
Like you said its a good tool for the $ and can be used even more with the above items just for your info.
Again like your maint. program for your planes --- trying to do same to mine especially your finish on them. Mike

SmooveBeeze Smoove. I like mine and use it a lot; especially when truing a damaged edge. For me well worth the buck and a half. The $700 for the top shelf is way out of my budget range. I just don't sharpen that much. Thanks again and good luck

just bought a scheppach tiger 250 with a 10 inch wheel.
fixed a trashed chizel in about 15 minutes, very important to make sure the chizel is square in the guide and the correct angle is set. once setup is done its easy.
Tormak has some nice addition's and fine adjustment and better quality guides, but I dont think the double of the price. Tormak is a quality tool but in Australia your looking at just over $1000 plus guides, schappech $450 with a 4 guide set.

Well Done Young Man.A very balanced and concise view of your opnion of both machines.By balanced I mean MONEY Lol..If it does the job,Let the people who can afford it buy one, simple.Unlike me,I am in the same boat as you,Besides which is does Grate to spend monies I really cannot justify for what little I will be using it.. One little nicety I did observe was the two pronged REST,Does have a STOP on it, Basicly it is threaded with a hieght nut.. When I get mine,Which incidently will be another machine,The SCEHPPAC 2000s. I will be threading mine on one side,so it doesn't drop quickly to the bottom of the steel legs..Well adjusted ,,,carefulll BUTTON DIE Should do the trick..I was a Tool Maker anyway by Trade,Now Retired like you.. Anyway Thank you gor your interesting view of the modern era catching us both up.lol.

Thanks Mike... Originally I wasn't considering this machine based on those flimsy bushings & a not very well machined main shaft assy that spins in those cheap bushings.
On the other hand, the Tormak starts around $419 I believe and is a bit pricey for the amount of use I would get out of it. I am still doing my research on wet grinders & I will reconsider the Grizzly after watching your thoughtful video on this unit.
Thanks, Bill on the Hill... :-)

I oil up my plains with gun oil, after putting them away. They never rust, & I live in East Texas, which on average is between 40%-60% humidity.

Trying to decide between this machine and the WEN version. WEN seems to have a better machine but the grinding wheel on this one as I've seen in other videos also seems to be better.

nice video,my budget is even less than yours, hence i just got the 8" version yesterday, i made the mistake of trusting the stops on the tool guide, now i have a slight skew on bevel, the wheel wore alot for 1 sharpening, when i washex the water tray out i got a whole handful of blue residue, i found it easy to flatten the wheel using an old sharpening stone that used to come with survival knives in the 80's. does your wheel wear that quickly. i really enjoyed using a properly sharp chisel for the first time. thought i was good hand sharpening, this definitely humbled me a bit.

there is a stone grader for grizzly as well and also I bought the scheppach tiger 2000s and I had the same wobble message and they also have a stone grader I think it is the same product but in a different suite

Lezlie Brian I'm not familiar with the Scheppach. Might be the exact same thing. The Grizzly has a lot of German words on the gauge. Not sure that's a clue on where it was built. Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment

Hello, Broncort1. It's not bad. Since it grinds at a very low grit, I use it mostly for damaged blades or grinding a different angle. Norton stones and Veritas guide is how I get them real sharp. Thanks for stopping by and taking time to leave the comment. All the best

Hey, Chad. Every time I use the Grizzly I too get sludge in the water tray. I've used the machine for many hours and the wheel Is only 1/4 inch less. At that rate this wheel should last for decades. The wheel on mine grinds to only 250 grit. I use it mainly to grind badly abused bevels and to make sure all is square. Afterwards I like to increase the sharpness by using a 1000 & 4000 water stone to really put an edge on. The grinder really works well and I hope you like yours as much as I do mine. Thanks for stopping by and leaving the comment. All the best
