Hey thanks for the cask makeup info! And good to hear that it does hold its own side by side. In my recollections of Yamazaki, I'd take Yoichi everytime if considering the price as well.
It seems to have surprised many! It does just invite more pours. I think it's a bottle that is great to share with people. Thanks for the comment! Cheers 🥃
Must have missed this video, Matt! Great review, as ever mate. Now Japanese whiskey is something I know next to nothing about. But I just saw Ralfy's review of this bottle and he was waxing lyrical about it too. Incidentally gave it the exact same score! Fascinating to learn that they still use direct coal-fired stills and also that they use worm tub condensers, except for one of their stills. Just ordered a bottle and looking forward to trying it myself 🥃
Thanks James! Same score as Ralfy eh? I must have finally got a score right haha! I watched that review too and it did seem like Ralfy likes the Yoichi spirit. I have found it the most engaging of the Japanese whiskies I've had so far so I'm definitely a fan. Hard not to be when you learn, as you point out, just how they are making this and the amount of extra effort going into it. Hope you enjoy the bottle once you crack into it. Cheers buddy! 🥃
@@whiskyonthewestcoast Had one dram and I did really enjoy it. I'm rubbish at remembering the finer nuances of Scotch I've tried, but it did remind of Craigellachie 13, I thought at least.
Had this at a tasting last week. And just picked up a bottle. It’s is so good! My early runner for favorite whisky of the year for me. It’s the one to beat!
You can't go wrong with either the Yoichi or Miyagikyo. I find Miyagikyo has a touch more tropical notes but both equally good. They won't knock your socks off but I find these entry level offerings delicate, relaxing and easy sipping drams.
Exactly, if you don't expect an earth shattering malt moment you'd likely be very content with something like Yoichi. I'll have to find some Miyagikyo to side by side this with. Cheer 🥃
It's funny that Roy snuck it in there again. Glad to hear you enjoyed it. I think it's unique amongst Japanese whisky profiles, which just makes me yearn for a naturally presented cask strength age stated bottling, the type of thing that doesn't really exist. 8.9 is an excellent score for this cap! Cheers 🥃
coal fire was phased out in Scotland distillery long time ago, most of them adopted to gas fire for their direct heat still when technology moving forward. Nowday distilleries still using direct heat still are glenfarclas, glenfiddich(partially), springbank(only wash still), and Glen Garioch switch back to direct heat and floor malting recently.
I love that Glen Garioch is switching back to direct fired stills and doing their own floor maltings. Hope more distilleries take this approach going forward. Thanks for the comment. Cheers 🥃
I guess we'll all have to be very diligent with our label reading 😄 I suppose if it was mandatory we'd lose bottlings like Nikka Striaght from the Barrel.
Sad state of affairs. Hopefully prices drop as supply returns, but to count on that happening seems like a fools errand. High prices really are why i haven't had more Japanese whisky.
Aged in New American Oak and Sherry Casks. $90 on the West Coast. Held up well in a side by side tasting against the Yamazaki 12.

This whisky surprised me, and it really has become one of my favorites! I reach for it over and over. Great review! 🏒

Great review, just picked up two bottles. It’s a great dram
Thanks Ryan! I have really enjoyed my bottle and will likely replace it once it's done so two bottles seems right to me! Cheers eh! 🥃

Glad you enjoyed it too! It is definitely my favourite option from Japan at the moment. I agree, very hard to beat. Cheers 🥃
Thanks for this great review. I’ve been wanting to buy it but it’s $100 US in my market.
Cheers 🥃
$100 USD is a bit steep to be certain. I probably wouldn't have made the purchase at that price.

You’re in good company with Yoichi as the master blender for one of the fanciest brands told me that’s his favorite Japanese currently available.
I bought a hatozaki pure malt for £33 this year which is the only budget I have ever seen. It was good value and bottled at 46 abv.
I'll keep that one in mind for the future Andrew. The Hatozaki retails for about the same as Yoichi in my market. Cheers 🥃
I tried this at Roy’s blind challenge in Glasgow last November and I liked it a lot, I haven’t purchased it yet but it’s in the queue.
Cap score 8.9

I don’t think the new “rules” are anything mandatory, just voluntary, unfortunately, but hopefully they’ll be followed.

In the states bottlings from Japan have skyrocketed on the shelves….from zero age to 10-15 years they all have 1 thing in common…way overpriced
