You can see their music hall roots in that sketch. Quite a lot of slapstick based around props, the steps & chair, but also the improvisation between them.
Please find the M & W sketch featuring Shirley Bassey singing “Smoke gets in your eyes,” whilst M & W are behind her playing work men. The whole sketch is hilarious but the bit with Shirley and the boot is priceless!
With you to the end this morning as I was washing up . This was probably a left over from their early music hall days to introduce a star guest act that wasn't joining in a sketch . The big Christmas shows with classic Hollywood dance routines , or the plays ' wot Ernie wrote ' are the best sources for M & W .
Morcambe & Wise were hugely popular on British television. They had several writers who were on top form, with their sketches, jokes etc. when these two were on television they seriously brought in the ratings. Interestingly, when Jerry Lewis & Dean Martin came over to tour London in the 50’s they hired these same writers, just so that they could refer to some current events happening in the UK @ the time. This was not unusual, & I believe, acts travelling out of the UK to the States would do the same.
The next guest was Herman's Hermits. Wikipedia: Herman's Hermits are an English rock and pop group formed in 1963 in Manchester and fronted by singer Peter Noone. Known for their jaunty beat sound and Noone's often tongue-in-cheek vocal style, the Hermits charted with numerous transatlantic hits in the UK and in America, where they ranked as one of the most successful acts in the Beatles-led British Invasion. In 2019, Noone won the “Entertainer of the Year” award at the Casino Entertainment Awards in Las Vegas. I'm Henry the Eighth, I Am was a hit for Herman's Hermits.
In 1950, despite its unlikely central premise of a ventriloquist act on radio. a Ventriloquist Act averaged 15 million listeners, and a fan club boasted 250,000 members. It was so successful that, after only four months on the air, it won the Daily Mail's Variety Award. It wasn't so successful on TV , years later, when we could see that the ventriloquist wasn't very good....
For another. Morecambe and Wise reaction, it’d be cool to see a reaction to one with Peter Cushing in it. He was kind of a running gag on their show, much like the singer Des O’Connor. That would also be a good reaction.
The ending reminds me of the infamous Emu (Rod Hull) attack on Michael Parkinson on his talk show. You should also look into Peter Brough - the famous British radio ventriloquist whose career was pretty ended by the coming of TV (you can probably guess why!).
Hi Nick & Jodi, it would appear by the end, M & W helped Jodi forget about her knee hurting !! Have you noticed Eric`s deliberate difficulties with the stage curtain, he never could seem to find the opening. Reminds me of a regular joke he used to make about Ernie`s hairline. :)
Think as commented this must of been very early on in their national tv fame and is very much a music hall . There were far better. A lot of M and W relied on M one line gags. The breakfast scene is one that will last forever. In their flat sharing scenes. It was weird but not really thought of as strange but they shared a bed. Purely to get them both in scene. My parents had a M and W record( LP)which they often played(the tv reception wasn’t great in those days). The scene of visiting a nudist camp was hilarious to us kids . Sadly we threw it out when clearing their house when they passed away. Would be brilliant to find that. Could have been on TV too.

Yes, Faye. I just wrote a similar thing.
Archie Andrews was probably inspired by the Charley McCarthy Show on American Radio from 1936.
Watch the 'Eric and Ernie' BBC drama.
A really good insight into how these met and grew up together.

Eric & Ernie with Des O Connor is a very popular sketch
A unique watch, Nina Conti , hilarious human puppet ventriloquism act Live at the Apollo., bonus if she had you both on stage

For current ventriloquists try Nina Conti especially when putting audience in masks.
Jodi!!! 🥰🥰
❤
You should do breakfast sketch 😂😂
Talking about ventroloquists, have you seen Rod Hull, Emu, and Richard Pryor? Not a combination you see too often.
You will kill yourself laughing.
I think the word Jodi was searching for is 'puppeteering' Nick. We know who the brains of your outfit is...
7:58 The actions of a coke addict.
Nick check out Ventriloquist Nina Conti, she's very very funny.
Last cats does countdown vid I thought ir was funny neither of you knew what a splif was...this one I think jodi just dropped some acid 😂😂

Nope!
@@Jodi_BoringReviews You should have done a deal with Coke or drank something else!
Tolerating it
Coke is not good for you. Cut down.
😢
Sorry guys stopped watching your reviews as they’re too boring. Stop the old 1970/80’s simplistic comedy shows.
