    This was a great tutorial. One thing of note: your audio example is perfect for old guys like me who need to be able to hear differences and contrasts. I find so many tutorials use complex or distorted examples that are almost impossible to follow. Nathan, you are an awesome educator!

    Use two separate sends a short verb and a hall verb. Automate the volume of the sends. Go word by word the long for gaps the short for volume where your vocal kind of sounds like a lack of energy.

    +1: combinating the 2nd and 3rd ones: sidechaining a high shelf dynamic eq can be working as well if you want more ‘articulation’ with the reverb

    Great video, i personally love Raum, for me one of the most useful reverb…
    I put before the reverb and compression a delay with low feedback (2 or 3 repetition) so you reduce a little the decay of reverb but preserve a long diffusion and takes a sense of “freeze the words” 😀

    high cut to take off sibilants? it works with super dark reverbs but if you turn down from 12k to 10k you're still getting most of the sibilants. some singers will have some of their S's at just above 3k. you can either go to roll off basically everything until the verb is just mids and lows, or you should just cut sibilants from the throw (if you already have the lead sing that same part no need to double that up)

    Great video! You are very straight to the point and highlight all of the important things rather than the fluff. I'm use these concepts all the time but sometimes like watching videos about it just to see if it sparks new thoughts about how to use it. This is great cause you show how to use things in a musical/subtle way.

    New subscriber here. Just want to say thank you. Your breakdowns are incredible! What I appreciate the most (from what I’ve seen so far) is how you’ve highlighted what I wish I knew when I started out, and what is and is not worth spending on to start! Hats off ! Now I gotta go back thru your channel and learn more ! 😸. By the way.. how else can I support you (besides liking and sharing) ? I will be very interested in your course once I get better !

When you're ready to leap into my program - that's definitely the best place to learn fast without a doubt. I will say, I have a lot of beginners in the course who're crushing it so don't feel like you can't jump in just cause you're a beginner! Either way - happy to read this comment, my man!

    Love your videos man. Your videos (along with other TH-camrs’) have helped me improve my production plus inspired a plethora of new ideas. I like your emphasis on teaching concepts and possible applications as opposed to simply teaching how to do it with little to no explanation of why and when to do it (which I’ve found is a problem with some music production TH-camrs). You have such a great teaching style, and your skills undoubtedly back up what you’re teaching (that track sounds killer, man!). I’ve been thinking I need to finally purchase a course on production and mixing as my learning has begun to stagnate a bit while solely relying on TH-cam videos and my own personal experimentation, and I’m pretty sure I’m gonna have to pull the trigger on your course. You just have such a good vibe about you, and I’m sure I won’t be disappointed by it given the quality of your free videos here on TH-cam. I doubt you’ll see this comment haha, but on the off-chance you do, thanks for all you do. Stay you, stay awesome 🙌🏻

      @NathanJamesLarsen  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Noah! I read all my comments :)
      This is just so heart warming to read. I love that you've caught on that I focus on principles - I saw the EXACT same problem with others just show HOW by not WHY or WHEN! So I love that -- thanks for sharing!
      Would love to have you in the program - it's a great program and an amazing community

    I notice you didn't adjust the level to the send (bus 6) on the channel strip, but left it at like 2/3rds. Any reason for that?

    • @NathanJamesLarsen
      @NathanJamesLarsen  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Reverb definitely needs to used more moderately in that case but listen to tracks you want to model after and keenly listen to what things they're doing and work to model after it.
      Getting great source (recording) and great performance is definitely the most important elements. Then EQ and Compression

    Very well explained thank you! One question, why copying the track on a separate one for the throw rather than just automating a send ?

    • @NathanJamesLarsen
      @NathanJamesLarsen  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Like I said - you can do that this is just the easy way and in many cases if you don't have as much space between the line you want to throw and the next one, it can be problematic cause then you have to duck the automation down which might not sound good - and often doesn't

    • @maximeblais2032
      @maximeblais2032 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@NathanJamesLarsen very clear...I wanted to know indeed when to prefer this option over automation and I better understand now that reverting to the initial position may be quite tricky when the next phrase is fast. Thanks again. Please keep up your amazing work, we love it !

    I’m gonna nit pick a bit. First off I love your videos. Bring tons of value to all of us with everyone you put out. So this is a small thing that is bugging me about most youtubers but yours is the first that I’m calling out cause I care. There are three words that youtubers have a tendency to over use. I’m just gonna list them. Actually, actual, basically. I think these words are appealing because in a world so beaten and tattered by advertising culture you have to sort of cut through the noise with “actually” almost as if to say this is not an ad but the truth. Not a manipulation to get you to buy but what is really going on. So yeah I get it. Way overused. Better to just leave it out in my opinion. Whatever that’s worth. Watch others out on TH-cam. I love VFX artist react videos but they do it a ton. There are some others that I can’t remember because I just turned them off because of the word overload. Just trying to help. Love the channel.

    The mix doesn't need to be at 100% all the time. Thats how the reverb becomes overwhelming.

    • @NathanJamesLarsen
      @NathanJamesLarsen  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You control the volume of the reverb with the fader. So if you're doing it right then it won't be overwhelming. Point of having mix go 100% is because it's on a bus and not on the actual vocal channel strip - so you control volume of the reverb on the bus - not within the reverb itself.
