- A 1998 special documenting Keiko the killer whale's journey back to the wild, from his time in Mexico City, to his rehabilitation in Oregon to the water of Iceland. Keiko, known for his role in Free Willy, was the focus of a major effort to return him to the ocean after years in captivity. He was transferred to a sea pen in Iceland for rehabilitation, but despite these efforts, he struggled to integrate with wild orcas and continued seeking out human contact. Keiko passed away in 2003 in Norway, marking the end of his highly publicized move towards freedom.

@@williamgildehaus4815 You were lucky. I always wanted to go see him when he was in Newport, but never got the chance. But, he’ll always be my big sweet boy.
Still shouldn’t have had it in captivity to begin with. Sad they have a whole ocean to move and being stuck in a pool for human enjoyment. Go take a boat out in the ocean and see them in the wild.. imagine that 10k people taking advantage of whale watching from land themselves and whale watching tours to see them in the wild with their families rather threw a glass on land where it doesnt belong being extremely depressed
❤❤❤
another famous one like Keiko is grizzly 399 in Teton NP
Someday (soon, i hope) cetacean captivity will be a thing of the past and anyone who wants to see them will go to visit them in their natural habitat.
Releasing him after being in captivity so long wasn't smart should have been in a supervised natural area where his health and food could have been taken care of
