I love how the researcher is wondering what the whales think of him and the part of him chilling with all the penguins. The way he got upclose to that elephant seal fight! Wow what a great documentary
Why do we attribute "human" to kindness? The other animal world is full of accounts of 'kindness". And why do we think everything is out to get us and when it shows that it isn't...wow!...what a human-like behaviour? Humanity has shown such incredible deliberate cruelty towards every other species - and including its own- that we should be also then surprised when we are kind. Humans are like all other critters....some good and some bad and it is us that makes that distinction based on our own perception of the world - which I am sure is very different from a snail or an orca.
Gerry S - According to Atheist cult Priest Richard Dawkins, "there is no purpose, no evil and no good, nothing but pointless indifference." So in 'honor' of "atheism", which is absurd and truthfully to mock the absurdity of the notion of a lack of belief, let's all kill the whales, shall we? No such thing as evil according to Atheist Priest dawkins, remember?
Real Estate Unplugged you are taking something out of context and bending it to make a point of your own here about religion. I doubt Dawkins would agree with your depiction of his position. But moreover, Religion has nothing to do with this here.
My favorite part is when the docu maker with camera man befriended the young elephant seals is so adorable! My heart warms a lot I goes to see that seals can also show the virtue of friendship toward humans.
More like, he puts a script into it. He knew damn well the answer to that fake question. He really poured on the "aw shucks mister" vibe. Seems any normal person's first thought playing with the seal under water is "this is NOT safe for you buddy" and wouldn't have encouraged play time in a death trap area, knowing full well the young seal was a rookie to the dangers of the sea and the killers in that immediate area waiting for a meal. I would have been nervous for the seal and wouldn't have distracted the seal by playing in a dangerous area, but likely this 'super nice guy' was thinking if it gets eaten it'll make epic up close footage.
I knew orca's were smart, but damn, they really do have their own culture. I'm stunned by this honestly, and also fascinated Edit: Damnit, now I'm crying
I met a commercial fisherman in Alaska and he really respected the orca's, even though they would steal his catch, etc. In his view nothing else in the sea measured up for size, power and intelligence. It was nice to meet a guy, who despite the economic challenges the orca's presented, still thought they were of such great value and should be looked after. When he talked about them, you could see the smile on his face and how he treasured the occasional interaction.

There are many categories of intelligence. Many animals display different abilities of intelligence. Chimpanzees have a better memory than humans. I guess it all just depends on your interpretation of intelligence.
The Orcas in crystalline water swimming amongst swirling kelp was so moving and beautiful. How anyone can justify keeping these incredible creatures in captivity is beyond my understanding.
Agreed. They really suffer. I read a book that a SeaWorld trainer wrote. He said the Orcas get sunburn, the pool water is to warm and they get rashes, they are given anti acids for stomach ulcers. They bang their head's against the cement in the pool. They chew on the cement out of boredom. They break their teeth. A few whales have killed themselves from banging their heads against the cement really hard. They with hold food so they perform. They breed the female Orcas to early. Babies are still born. Or they take their baby away. The mom cries for day's. It's so heartbreaking.
The visuals of the abandoned, then orphaned, then rejected seal pup it's beyond heartbreaking. You can feel the little fellow's despair, he knows what's coming. He tried to follow his mother. His mother looks back towards her pup, she does not want to leave him, but she has no choice, her strength is gone.. Deeply sad.

It's not a "cute squeaky sound" its a highly sophisticated language that we can not under stand. We have researched the shit out of their language and have gotten nowhere. That "cute squeaky sound" is different from all other orca pods. Every orca pod has their own language and not one pod has the same language as another. Also the males never leave their mothers. Their whole lives they are no more than 10 ft from their mothers. If they get bullied by other male orcas. They'll stay on the outside of the pod. In which they'll eventually come back into it but pods never break or never fully kick out another orca. This is also why releasing them from captivity could have horrible results. They don't speak the same language as other pods so they wont be accepted in, only to their pod, which may be impossible to find

Excellent documentary. Nature and the balance of it is so beautiful, yet so tragic. I could not stop crying for the baby orphan because he was so cute, and so innocent. He just became a victim of the circle of life and as sad as it is, it is also the very concept that keeps nature balanced.

Bram Steenhoek of course they fucking are. If they’re hungry enough they will gobble your ass up like a goddamn snack. Just cause there aren’t any recorded attacks doesn’t mean that it never happened.
Eustace King With how much bullshit you're talking, you would make an excellent farm. There have been only 2 recorded orca attacks on humans in the wild and none were fatal. The ones that resulted in human deaths occurred in captivity. Are orcas physically capable of devouring a human? Yes Do they do it? No And here’s why: They know exactly what they are looking for, to eat; just as you may look at an apple tree, and choose to eat the apples and not the leaves of the tree. Around the world, there are Orcas that like to eat sharks. Others like to eat sting rays but not fish. Others like seals and fish, but not sharks. There are Orcas that eat almost exclusively whales; Gray Whales, Bowhead, Beluga, even the unicorn-horned Narwhal. None of them like humans, because they have not been taught that humans are food. Unlike other apex predators like lions and others, they do not go after anything and everything that moves. They have been taught what to eat, by others in the pod, by their parents, by their grandparents. Why did the word get around that humans are not food? It’s very possible that they would have trouble with our bones. Our long bones are longer and thicker than any other animal that they do entirely consume. They don’t have to get a bone stuck in their throat to understand that something with these long thin appendages might not go down easily. They can see we are alien looking, and things that aren’t fat and compact are not attractive… don’t look scrumptious. Obviously, they can’t swallow us whole. That would leave two options; crunching us up, which would create sharp bone splinters that would be dangerous in their throat… or, they could bite the meat from around our bones, as they do with prey such as walruses, or large whales. Clearly, we aren’t big enough, muscular enough, or blubbery enough to allow them to do that. So… the bottom line is… we are not on their menu. We don’t make a good meal, and in fact, trying to eat us may be dangerous if they try to chew us up. At Thanksgiving Dinner, we don’t just eat an entire turkey… it has bones that would harm us if we did that. We cut the meat off. Orcas don’t chew us up, for the same reason. And they can’t cut (bite) the meat off. So, once again… we are not on their menu.
@@orcawithdrip827 I think they understand that humans are really smart and a possible threat to them so they act friendly to us.. I've seen a lot of orcas showing their belly to human which is a friendly sign.
That was amazing!!! The way you interacted with the seal pups was hysterical and fascinating at the same time. Also, diving into the sea with one of the top predators took a lot of courage. I think I understand what you mean when you say you understood what the Orcas were conveying to you. Be it subtle as a mouth wide open (as you put it) you could somehow know that mutual respect was attained by both species. I do not know why this documentary isn't seen by more viewers. This documentary has taken first place with me. Kudos to you and whoever else was there filming and studying the wildlife down there. Top notch stuff. The animals you studied were the stars of the show, but you also should be commended for your role in this video.

Nice documentary all the same, but I doubt his tent blowing away would really be an issue when there is likely to be a solid structure where the rest of the crew are staying
William Thomas Ramey isn’t it amazing how our intuition tells us they are super intelligent? they are actually the second most intelligent being besides humans which is amazing and it is quite clear why they have been dubbed the second most intelligent being, they are so human like, yet so alien which is pretty beautiful and call me crazy but there is such a connection to them and it makes me wonder if we have a deep past with them perhaps or something even more complex and I suppose that might play into the aquatic ape theory (it’s a really intriguing theory that is about as credible as the standard theory of human evolution, Look it up)but setting that aside even still, it’s astonishing this connection that we have to them and even your run of the mill dolphin, they even help us fish for Christ sakes! Also, sorry for such an essay but I have been very interested in this subject recently. Cheers man.
Toxic Waffle they aren’t the second smartest though? Like I know thats a very debatable subject, most of the time internet pages choose bottlenose dolphins as the second smartest
Adrián Medina yeah i saw that too and it’s hard to judge the “intelligence” of anything, I’m not sure why I haven’t changed/taken down my comment because I don’t really agree with what I said although I do still think orcas are very “intelligent” creatures

@Miss Isle .... Are you insane? Nature is cruel? It is neither cruel nor benevolent. It just is a cycle. even though we are the most dangerous predator on earth, seals now we dont have a natural instinct to hunt and kill them, but of course if we wanted to, we could just take a gun, and hunt whatever food we want
It's none of what you guys said. Because seals are constantly exposed to humans like this, they don't know that we're potentially harmful. After a year or two the population would adjust its behavior accordingly. Same thing happens when you hunt animals that aren't used to humans. You can get right up close to them because they don't know that you're bad. However come back after a hunting season or two later and you'll see that they're cautious around humans now.
We may be the most dangerous predator as we are the apex predator of the world, but we have also contributed a lot of good to Nature. We are slowly trying to make up for our mistakes as we evolve.
What a pleasure it was to experience this documentary. Thank you, for sharing this! I'd be thrilled to see more similar docs. If anyone has any suggestions I'd be happy to explore them.

"How human". The signature of humanity ranges from the best to the most cruel and bestial behavior.
Gerry S - According to Atheist cult Priest Richard Dawkins, "there is no purpose, no evil and no good, nothing but pointless indifference."
So in 'honor' of "atheism", which is absurd and truthfully to mock the absurdity of the notion of a lack of belief, let's all kill the whales, shall we? No such thing as evil according to Atheist Priest dawkins, remember?
Real Estate Unplugged you are taking something out of context and bending it to make a point of your own here about religion. I doubt Dawkins would agree with your depiction of his position. But moreover, Religion has nothing to do with this here.
Raph Ael - I came here to see the whales but the big question sprung up ☝. Are you with the Atheist cult master, Richard Dawkins?
My favorite part is when the docu maker with camera man befriended the young elephant seals is so adorable! My heart warms a lot I goes to see that seals can also show the virtue of friendship toward humans.
"Is she hoping to catch my seal friend?" paralyzed me. This documentary is truly wholesome because he put his feelings into it.
I can't take it!
Just makes it shit in my opinion :)
@@ikigai47there’s literally no such thing as “fake” questions
@@ikigai47He didn’t intentionally distract the seal, the seal came to him and played with him not the other way around.
I knew orca's were smart, but damn, they really do have their own culture. I'm stunned by this honestly, and also fascinated
Edit: Damnit, now I'm crying
I met a commercial fisherman in Alaska and he really respected the orca's, even though they would steal his catch, etc. In his view nothing else in the sea measured up for size, power and intelligence. It was nice to meet a guy, who despite the economic challenges the orca's presented, still thought they were of such great value and should be looked after. When he talked about them, you could see the smile on his face and how he treasured the occasional interaction.
I consider Orcas the 2nd most intelligent lifeforms on this planet.
2nd only to us.
Dave Crupel there just as smart as us if not smarter
@@keithzacek7692 and i love that. :)
@@davecrupel2817 The second most intelligent life form on this planet is a dolphin. They have an estimated EQ of around 5.26. For comparison a human has an EQ of 6.56 to 7.28 or higher. The EQ of an orca is around 2.50 or 2.61. Dolphins are extremely intelligent and are some of the only few animals that display self-awareness. Orangutans Are very intelligent as well with an EQ of around 4.5. Chimpanzees are better than humans in some memory tasks.
Goats have excellent long-term memory.
Elephants can work together.
Parrots can reproduce sounds of the human language.
Dolphins can recognize themselves in the mirror.
New Caledonian crows understand cause-and-effect relationships.
Scrub jays plan for the future.
I know! People say nature is cruel. It's humans like that who are the real evil!
It's the lack of understanding by others that makes them end up in cages. Not your lack of understand of ignorant people.
@@Bella-ht5jb9he3z Sounds like the series, The Handmaid's Tale. seriously!

I like the squeaky sounds the orcas make. It's so cute
Also creepy making that cute sound when they are killing the seals.

Not creatures pay attention!
What a spectacular piece of work from you. For 50 minutes I completely lost in harmony of nature.
The only thing bigger than the elephant seals is this guys balls for getting in the water with them Orcas. Respect.
Orcas aint dangerous towards men
Bram Steenhoek of course they fucking are.
Yes
Do they do it? No
And here’s why: They know exactly what they are looking for, to eat; just as you may look at an apple tree, and choose to eat the apples and not the leaves of the tree.
Disturbed Orca Okay, but would you jump off the boat and into a group of orcas looking for food?

Bill Dimock , Those were definitely gestures of gratitude. They remember. Highly intelligent animals there.
I'd say he was fairly safe with a large film crew filming him whilst he was filming them, I'm guessing what he was filming was for personal use as none of his footage is actually in this documentary.
Nice documentary all the same, but I doubt his tent blowing away would really be an issue when there is likely to be a solid structure where the rest of the crew are staying
It was their SEAL of approval
Amazing documentary. People need films like this to remember our place in the world and our responsibility to protect it.
Orcas are so amazing. I'm convinced they are one of the most intelligent species on the planet, along with us, other dolphin type mammals and octopus.
Like I know thats a very debatable subject, most of the time internet pages choose bottlenose dolphins as the second smartest

little do they realize its the most dangerous predator on this planet
even though we are the most dangerous predator on earth, seals now we dont have a natural instinct to hunt and kill them, but of course if we wanted to, we could just take a gun, and hunt whatever food we want
And yet you likley arent fussed by the odd mosquito, even though they are OUR most dangerous preadator on the planet.

Orcas are more interesting than most of the people you will meet this month. They are an awesome, inspiring predator.
Beautifully filmed and intimate glimpse into the natural environment and life cycles of the Orcas, Elephant Seals and King Penguins in an inhospitable and harsh environment. Personal sacrifice and dedication to pursue such an ambitious project is greatly appreciated.
When he says “suddenly I feel alone, I am more fragile than the animals”... in terms of some layers of environmental comforts and body lily evolution such as blabber like the elephant seals for sure yes, the truth is for all wild animals, every single day is a victory of survival and life. So for this yes humans who capture the wonders of wild animals to this extreme, realise it is life or death daily. This is the way of life too, for many people around the world! Fantastic filming and absolute kudos for allowing those of us not without struggles... although can comfortably enjoy the amazing learning experience of such documenting, such majestic sea creatures both mammals and birds.
Wow what a wonderful video! The encounters with the Elephant Seal, the birds, the sea lions, and the Orcas at the end, what an amazing experience, so nicely and uniquely documented to share with us. You made friends with them all! :-) Well done, and thank you for this. :-)
Narator: "This male is staking out his territory even though it hasn't found any single mate."
Seal: "The fuck did you say about me, man!?" *charged at him*
He was really offended 😂
lmao
Exactly!! Rofl!! 😂
the disrespect lmao
It’s hard to imagine that one so gentle and beautiful can also be so ruthless. This is the way of the world. Amazing

Next thing you know there’s a Congo line of camera men that covers the entire island
After seeing how those seals treated the orphaned pup it made it a lot easier to watch them in the water surrounded by orcas. The eyes of the seal looking around for the next bite or blow from the orcas is a vivid image in my mind but made a lot easier after the poor pup was attacked.
Orca: *giant fin sticking out of water
Orca: You can't see me
@H̵̡͟E ̨C̡͠O̶ME͘͢S͞ They were making a joke numbnuts, do you not have a sense of humor?
@H̵̡͟E ̨C̡͠O̶ME͘͢S͞ Dumbnumb... okay, lol. By the way, Orcas cannot bend their dorsal fin over like you said, it's either naturally curved or straight up. Get educated before making stupid and ignorant comments. Also learn to make jokes, cause that one wasn't funny.
@H̵̡͟E ̨C̡͠O̶ME͘͢S͞ It's difficult for me to argue with someone of your 'education', so to save myself the trouble, I think I'll just ignore you now.
@H̵̡͟E ̨C̡͠O̶ME͘͢S͞ Ahahahahahahahhahahaha, yeah whatever.
@H̵̡͟E ̨C̡͠O̶ME͘͢S͞ you are so full of shit, you should go take a dump
Some of the best cinematography I’ve ever seen..
I had tears of joy when he was playing with the infants.
It was cute, except when he was poking it on the nose, and almost got eaten... They're born with teeth!
@@shevahauser1780 Hey youtube Karen they where clearly playing and the pup knew that, go take out ur buttplug
@Dakota Kersey Same here, just speaking my mind

I cried buckets over his seal friend😭 It was an extraordinary interaction that made my heart melt. The close interactions and the emotion delivered were heartwarming. My fav documentary so far❤️
So the dominant male goes a whole mating season without eating just to smash?? what a BEAST!!
In those 2 months he loses about 1700 lbs or the weight of a Smart Car.
It seems to me the only seals eating on that beach are the pups.
Bookie Anderson shut up bookie
@@GeminiRhiannon elephant seals do not eat other seals
@@megaball-ps8tq Okay... I didn't say they did... I said the pups are the only ones eating. Because they're nursing... Duh.
