I'm a 49yo Heavy Metal bass player who just bought his first groovebox the other day (a ZOOM ARQ AR-96). I've been using Rytmik Studio and for the most part I'm ambling about trying different combinations without any idea what does what. So sometimes my songs sound really awesome, and sometimes they sound just milquetoast and I'm never sure what I did with the synth to make it sound as good as it did "that one time".
With your tutorial, I'm feeling more confident now. :)

Hi. I'm not an EDM guy, but I needed to work with the basic EDM sounds these days, so thank you for a very to the point video that got me covered on all I needed.

Gabe that was fantastic - Just coining the term "supersaw" was in itself helpful - since I'm working on a project with a friend who does electronic music , and communicating sound ideas can be tricky without a shared language D: ,
also the shaping of the saw wave to achieve different popular aesthetics was very clear .
TBH if you'll make a series out of this - Exploring different popular sounds and naming them \ bringing up song refferences to them then diving quickly to shaping them - would be very practical.
On another note -
As a new circuit user - the lack of arpeggiatior and scatter effect does not leave much room for odd explorations of melodies and harmonies (the scales options nice though)
which Is somewhat of a bum , it leaves you to explore with what your hands can tap to record or trying different stuff slowly on the sequencer which isn't the most the most fun .
I saw your video about creating tracks mixing the circuit with a traditional DAW , which was nice -
I was wondering if you have Ideas on fun ways to use the DAWs midi capabilities with arps and scatters \ other simple tricks which do not involve too much midi programming VIA the mouse and keyboard (which is why most people get a groove box) to speed up the flow of writing in the circuit and explore different rythmical and harmonical variations .
This could make the circuit so much better.
Glad it was helpful, although to be clear, I didn't come up with the term supersaw, that's been around for a while. I'm definitely thinking about making a series out of this... We'll see if I can come up with a way to make that happen.
For arps in the Circuit, usually programming them in by hand is faster than playing them in. For doing automated arps and such, it would be worth looking into a plugin like Scaler or Cthulhu.

Is the master channel of the setuper peaking into the red? If you have any peaks over 0dB it will distort. Please do let know, We will get
It's been a while since this video came out, but if I recall correctly I had a limiter applied (I usually use LoudMax, which is free), so it keeps stuff from peaking.

Are you just messing with Serum's default settings, or did you get the sound you wanted before the tutorial started?
I'm just trying to see if Serum sounds that good out of the box
I started from the default settings. It can sound that good out of the box, but do note that a lot of synth plugins that use subtractive synthesis are capable of most of the sounds in this video (other than the growls near the end).
@@GabeMillerMusic I was following along in Sytrus. I'm starting to feel comfortable enough with it too make nice saws, but I was impressed with Serums sound right away. 16 unisons definitely added some depth. Plus, the tone was warm with a healthy amount of coarseness from the detune
I just got Serum and followed this video, you can get the EXACT sounds you hear just by following along. The only sound you cant get is the last one where Gabe is using a custom wavetable he made from a dubstep song. Would luv to get that wavetable to follow long :) hint hint!
Is this something you can do on one hardware synth? And what type would that be?
You can do most of the stuff I showed on a whole lot of hardware synths. The only thing you can't do on every synth is the wavetable based growl stuff.

The Supersaw is the Comic Sans MS of dance music.
You'd be shocked at how much of sound design in a ton of music (not just electronic) relies on the supersaw as its foundation in some form. It's more like the Arial of electronic music if anything.
@@GabeMillerMusic Fair enough. It's just a tried sound to me, but I certainly see it as a foundation. :)
Is there any free synth that you would recommend?
I haven't used it much yet, but Vital is very much worth looking into.
