  • Dubai might be one of the most ambitious cities in the world. They're ready to do anything to be number one. Tallest building in the world? Easy. Largest mall in the world? Sure. Largest Ferry's wheel? ok

@Mark n You mean like we have over here in North America? My thoughts exactly. We have two choices for political party (red or blue, ie: Coke or Pepsi) and we have workers being paid $14/hr to work on roads and do all the grunt work. $14/hr Cdn isn't a living wage, so that constitutes slave labour. The tradespeople earn more, but not the majority of the workers doing construction who are digging, holding signs, etc.

Do you know that with your money, Abu Dhabi is represented by the Crown Prince Mohammed bin Zayed, who swore to you that he kills the people of Yemen by supporting their weapons, setting up militias, and occupying the ports, especially Aden Port, which Abu Dhabi believes will end the future of all the Emirates and on the port of Jebel Ali, and therefore kills the people of Yemen and prolongs the duration of the war to remain Yemen's ports are idle. Also, it ignites sedition in Libya and supports advanced weapons to kill the entire Libyan people from your money, tourists. I swear to you that I do not lie to you and see what I did in Yemen, the good land despite its poverty.

I loved everything about Dubai and Abu Dhabi! The shopping was fantastic, skiing indoors (something you don’t do everyday) Global Village, the Sheikh Zayed Mosque, the metro and as a American gal who went over alone I felt very safe. The workers that work on all they skyscrapers however live in very impoverished surroundings. Many are bused an hour away where they live 5-6 in a room with no modern conveniences. There are some Documentaries about the workers. But all in all I loved my time there!

Cuthbert Bracegirdle Where did China get her greatness? So, why is Dubai putting into practice what they leaned from the west a problem to you? Would you rather see Dubai a poor undeveloped city? Do you know Nigeria in Africa had (I don’t know about now) more oil wealth than UAE and intact at one point, Dubai went to borrow money from Nigeria (I mean Nigeria and not IMF which tells you how rich the country was) but there is NO city in Nigeria that can boast of 3-4 hour electricity in one day unless maybe Abuja, the capital because of corruption. There are NOT MANY cities in the world that boast of the level of development and sophistication in Dubai, hence among the 6 most visited places on our planet. The fact that they accomplished that without taxing the hell out of their people like most western cities is commendable. Most western celebrities have mansions there because there is no property tax. My feeling is that you probably have not been to Dubai and making your comments based on a few minutes video clip.

i think there's a bit of a luck of green spaces and social spaces especially in urban dense areas. People need to be able to enjoy the city both in the day and night by creating more social spaces within the city, spaces to relax. Spaces to sit and socialise with friends and to also make connections, spaces that would feel natural to build connections.

I love this wonderful forward thinking Dubai and was absolutely stunned and mesmerized at the progress made in the time between my first, second and subsequent visits. I am from Scotland and first visited Dubai in 1974 with my then boyfriend who was reputed to be one of the top Poker Players in the world at the time, he was invited as a guest to play in some private Poker Games in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. I was shocked at how primitive the Country was because as an 18 year old girl I had worked in London and Glasgow in the Fashion Industry and saw how they spent money like it was going out of fashion, I had met a lot of these rich Arabs in Casinos like Crockford's, Park Lane, Aspinall's and all the best fashion shops in Bond Street, Mayfair and Oxford Street. I was so excited to be going to this exotic place in the Middle East and imagined it would be like Ancient Rome or Egypt! Sadly it was more like Saltcoats and I actually saw nothing as women were not allowed to mix with men, so spent my time in a hotel room watching TV. My second visit was in 1984 a lot better than my first but hardly Palm Springs, since then I have visited 3 times, 2015, 2016, 2017 and I have got to say unbelievable is the only adjective I can use! For one man to change a Country on a level that he has defies belief! Is it Utopia? No! But is is as near die in my opinion! Well done Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, no one is saying he is a Saint by any manner of means but I know first hand how he has improved the life of his Citizens beyond measure, more than any Ruler in many hundreds of years! Fact!! It is not for everyone I agree but having been to Las Vegas and Palm Springs several times over the years, they are tacky by comparison!!!
