  • On the eve of the millennium, Oscar-winning screenwriter and author of ‘Eyes Wide Shut’ Frederic Raphael embarks on four remarkable pilgrimages, seeking to answer the fundamental questions concerning God, religion, dogma and the modern world. He begins his search in time-honoured detective-show style: by visiting God’s last known address. From Jerusalem he seeks out Buddhism and Islam in Asia, Catholicism in Spain and finally Puritanism and fundamentalist extremes in the USA.

Has God left without the truth to understand error from truth? If so, how could he judge us in righteousness if he has not preserved his Holy Word!

The Prophet Daniel spoke about "The Awful Horror". According to Prophet Daniel, "IT WILL BE STANDING IN THE HOLY PLACE UNTIL THE GOD'S GLORY STRIKE IT DOWN". The place where the Dome of the Rock is standing, is the place where Abraham sacrifice his son Isaac. Later the Muslim Rulers built the "Dome of the Rock" after conquering Jerusalem.

Standard practice for places that Muslims conquer. They mark their territory and build over christian holy sites. Like Hia Sophia in Constantinople. The Iberian Peninsula is a sore subject as is Sicily and other parts of Italy where the moors conquered, but were driven back. The conflict is far from over, but the West is willfully ignorant of reality in the middle east region.

    • @Len124
      @Len124 13 วันที่ผ่านมา

@@williamadams8353 I'm not a Muslim, but to be fair, it's also standard practice for Christians. During the Reconquista Christians did the same to Islamic holy sites, such as the Mosque of Cordoba, which was converted into a church after the Muslims were driven out. Contrary to the common misconception, it was forbidden to convert people to Islam by force (they could take territory, they just didn't believe conversion by the sword was genuine), so during the era of Al-Andalus, Spain was one of the few reliable refuges for Jews in Europe alongside a flourishing Christian community. The Quran forbids persecution of "People of the Book," which refers to religions that believed in the same God and were descendants of Abraham, so Judaism and Christianity were allowed to practice their religions openly aside from paying a tax to the Muslim rulers. When the last Islamic kingdom, Granada, was finally conquered in the Fifteenth Century, the Christian rulers of Aragon and Castille, who would combine to form Spain, expelled all other religions from the peninsula. The Jews in particular were forced to convert or be expelled. Most left, but those that did stay became the oppressed group known as the "Conversos," who were treated with suspicion despite converting. The vast repository of knowledge created during the Islamic Golden Age or preserved from the Classical Greeks and Romans that was now in the hands of the Spainish Christians would go on to greatly contribute to the Renaissance. Even during the first centuries of Christendom, many churches were remodelled pagan temples or holy sites.

While I'm a Christian, the Book of Daniel was clearly referencing Hellenistic events and regional powers. The book claims to be from an earlier time, but based on the vernacular used, like slang and writing style, anachronisms, and considerable literary evidence in general, it's clear that it was actually written in the last few centuries BC, hundreds of years after its supposed composition. It's why his predictions are crazy accurate up until a certain date and then they go off the rails. The different empires that are predicted to fall are of that time period, such as Babylon, Persia, Alexander's empire, the Seleucids, etc. It has nothing to do with our future or modern nations. One can be a believer without shutting off their brain. The Bible is more like a library full of different books/authors with their own interpretations in conversation or debate with one another. It's why they have different answers for things like the problem of evil, why different parts of the Bible often disagree, it explains why there's a shift from a belief in many gods, but insistence on only worshipping one (henotheism/monolatry), to a disbelief in all other gods (monotheism), and why they jump between different names for God (Yahweh, Elohim, Baal). The Bible was written by human hands and was inspired by their faith in God, but to take it as literal truth is a rather new and self-defeating way of approaching. Even Augustine believed that much of it (like Adam and Even for example) were _allegorical_ rather than literal. Such stories use fables to relay important lessons about the relationship between humans and God in an easily digestible and memorable waya; not to provide a history lesson. Of course the talking snake and the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil were not actual events, and they weren't meant to be taken as fact. Their purpose is to creatively describe the shortcomings of Man, our relationship with God, the notion of original sin, etc.

You could not be more wrong. Jews and Christians worship Elohim. Allah is some made up god that was made up 800 years ago. John 8:43, 44. Satan is the father of all lies. The Koran identifies Allah as the great deceiver. Mohamed worshiped the moon. I don't see how any rational person would see them as the same. Abraham had two sons by different mothers. Isaac was the father of the Jewish people. Ishmael was the father of the Arabs. Just because they share the same father does not magically make them worship the same god. Allah is as far from Elohim as night is from day. Don't even get me started on trying to compare Jesus of Nazareth with a murdering pedophile aka known as Mudhamed.
“But they (the Jews) were deceptive, and Allah was deceptive, for Allah is the best of deceivers (Wamakaroo wamakara Allahu waAllahu khayru al-makireena)!” S. 3:54; cf. 8:30
The word for deception/deceiver/scheme is makr. The lexical sources define the term as: Miim-Kaf-Ra = To practice deceit or guile or circumvention, practice evasion or deception, to plot, to exercise art or craft or cunning, act with policy, practice stratagem.

@@fritula6200 There are 3 kinds of Christian.
      Non-Christian
      Pre-Christian
      Christian
A - Non-Christian - has no conscious desire to make any effort to be like Christ, perhaps the right conditions were not present or they just never developed an interest. Or perhaps the idea never arose that any particular effort was required to merit actual membership.
A - Pre-Christian - believes in the precepts (mentioned below) and wishes, even quite earnestly, to be able at some time to "be like Christ". The more adept of this class of Christian find they can be like Christ sometimes, but usually only if they've had a nice cup of coffee, their rent and utilities are paid and things are quiet on the home front.Otherwise they may be observed falling from grace with even measurable frequency and even if half aware of their lack of ableness to be. These are the candidates described when it says " Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven." But one has to actually notice that one is "poor in spirit" before the will to make an effort can even arise.
A - Christian - in the full sense and meaning of the term, is one who obeys the precepts laid down in the Sermon on the Mount; the beatitudes in particular. Not just one who believes they are true but one who has sufficient being to endure what it means" to be like Christ". This is rightly considered, a pretty big achievement. ( I've found it to be an exceedingly rare presence in the world and it's getting scarcer by the decade).
I was born into a Catholic Family. I went to Church and Catholic schools and did my best to discover the meaning of what was buried in all that allegory and why for thousands of years the story being told was such a center of gravity for humanity. I mean billions of people have lived and died in the last two thousand years and hundreds of millions of them had their world view entirely influenced by Christian thought.Right? Maybe they were all nuts? I respect Christianity for the same reason I respect Islam and Judaism and Buddhism and Hinduism and Taoism and Sikhism and Sufism and on and on. Because despite their apparent differences all of them are teaching the same thing, that is, "How to be Human".
Perhaps I was confusing when I suggested all three of these religions are one (although these three in particular are definitely a family). I should have said there is only one teaching there always only ever has been and it's as old as we are, i.e., hundreds of thousands of years at least. This teaching has appeared in many different forms in the course of our tenure on this wolrd. Christianity is just a Xerox of an even older Religion.
I am aware of the concept that Christ died for our sins, I just never really believed that meant I was off the hook. And I think calling Jesus a God is a mistake that not only confuses the issue but even diminishes the real sacrifices made by him. In fact that was probably imported from one of the other numerous myths that existed before christianity and contained the concept of a god who sacrifices himself for the greater good. It's kind of an old story.
Even within Christianity there are variances in how it is interpreted. It would be a mistake to assume that all Christians (even in the same room) see things the same way.
You believe that a god died for you, but what does this mean? That his sacrifice inspires you to penetrate the meaning of his teaching? or that magically we are all already perfect so long as we swear allegiance to the the guy who died for our sins? I've never expected it to be quite that easy.
So which kind of Christian are you?
      Cheers

Each prophet came with the same message to worship one god and to not associate with him any partners and everytime the message gets corrupted time God sends another prophet til the last messenger Muhammad peace be upon him who god has promised to preserve his sunnah and his the Quran as the final revelation for mankind til the day of judgement.

To mark their conquered territory. The temple of Solomon and the Dome of the Rock can both coexist peacefully. Plenty of space to create the prophecy being brought into fruition. When peaceful coexisting groups can maintain levels of mutual respect and cooperation, they can begin to work together and let their children be the generation to build bonds and alliances with the descendants of those same groups that waged war against each other.

However, his obvious disdain, animosity and complete lack of even a basic respect for those who choose to be religious was a real turn off. I don't care if you believe in God or not, but he could have at least tried to work up a wee bit of respect for those who believe differently from him, much like he would work up a mouth full of spit to aim at the eye of the nearest religious person. I will give credit where credit is due, he treated adherents to all 3 religions with equal disdain. It really rubbed me the wrong way and I am exiting the video a little more than halfway through. The religious are often confounded by the idea that an outsider would see their religion objectively. Sometimes an objective lens on religions is a critical one. Such is the nature of where we in modern global civilization have come from ... and arrived. We have the ability to look at our ancient religions and their modern descendants and ask whether or not they still work in modernity. I think those are valuable questions to ask - if not imperative questions to ask, even if it comes across as insensitive at times.
Early on, he said "What is truth, if faith says otherwise?" in an ironic tone. This is an example of the kind of critical comment which you see as disrespectful, I imagine. However, you could make the case that putting beliefs that rest on faith instead of objective truth is one of the major causes of conflict and violent conflict between religious sects in world history - including the endless conflict in Israel/Palestine in the present day. So, perhaps that pursuit of objective reality andtruth is actually more important - morally - than the polite respect for religious differences that you are calling for.

Back then, they sacrificed animals because they thought God wanted that, in thier small human minds. He once said He didn't, but was basically, humoring people who didn't know any better. What He really wanted, was for people to repent of their sins and wrong thoughts, and turn back to Him. THAT is in the Holy Scriptures. Jesus was the final sacrifice- murdered by those who did not know God-- so it doesn't have to be done any more.

Glad to see you've escaped the religion. Welcome to the expanding community of freethinkers worldwide.
Here's something to consider. Many of us who have deconverted harbor, for a while, quite a bit of anger or even ill-will to the religions we left. I was there once too. It is understandable in so many cases. I do think one thing that those of us who find ourselves free of religion need to work towards, over time, is an objective understanding of religion as a human phenomenon and an important part of our cultural history.
In this case - the idea of the crucifixion saving mankind from original sin - is quite the logical contortion, isn't it. However, I'm now more interested in why such an idea would have had such power to early Christians. There's a psychology there which probably comes down to something like "self-forgiveness" - something that any shrink will tell you is very important for us all. So, this is one of the powers of religion - its ability to provide emotional relief. As the world (or, at least, the industrialized wealthier world) moves more and more towards an atheistic secular culture, we must be prepared to offer a viable alternative to this function (and all the other functions) that religion once provided.
Maybe you'll join us in that effort. :)

Ethnic jews today have a modern version of their faith. Secularism. They dont have a religion. It will only take a few decades before people in the west bank are given full voting rights. When that happens, what transpired in the time of saladin will happen again. A full return to the middle east community of the holy land. You just used “fake” Torah to make a point that you’re actually saying is therefore fake, since you’re both citing the Torah and calling it “fake”. Canaan wasn’t “Arab”. Abraham’s son Ishmael is the father of Arabs and inherited Arabia, as opposed to his brother Isaac who inherited Israel, according to all three Abrahamic traditions. However, history tells us that Israelites emerged from Canaanites. Canaanites assimilated into Israelite and costal Philistia. Canaan wasn’t one nation. It wasn’t Arab. It ceased to exist, 1400 years before the Arab invasion that began after Mohammed’s death in the early Seventh Century CE. No Arab or Muslim occupiers ever identified as “Palestinians” or “Canaanites”, until after Israel’s independence.

Because there is so much erroneous thinking and a profound misunderstanding of Christianity in particular a proper and accurate assessment of religion has been so impaired that it is impossible to unravel the strands of confusion. All of the three religions are riden with irreconcilable sectarian or denominational division. The utter incoherence of the faiths of fallen sinful humanity including atheism and secular humanism. There is NO peace to the WICKED says my God wrote the prophet Isiaiah. 57:21. Tribulation to EVERY soul who does evil, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. Paul to the Romans 2:9. Only when the triune God of the holy scriptures revealed in His Son Jesus Christ is discovered can man becset free from the corruption of his heart. The best place to start is Isiaiah chapter 53. chapters and the gospel of John Particularly chapters 1 3 6 10.
