      @@SRS1918In north America, honey bees are highly invasive and devastating to our environment. They're native to Eurasia and were imported a long time ago. As a commercial bee keeper you're profiting off of something that is actively destroying your environment around you. They block out food access for native pollinators and spread diseases to them. It's time to start spreading awareness of the realities of beekeeping. It's an industry started and sustained for money. What's more American that profit, especially at the expense of the ecosystem

      I wish they farmed bees that were actually native to their home lands, honey bees were imported from eurasia. Honey bees are incredibly devastating to our environment, they create competition and take food from our native pollinators as well as being shockingly good at spreading diseases for our native pollinators too.

Luckily we have some friends that are going to help me out, but i have learned a lot from your videos as well. We love honey, and i think it would be great to raise our own. What do you suggest for getting the bees as far ordering them....

    Kiwis generally grow as separate male and female plants (vs parts of the flowers or separately gendered flowers), it's gonna need a mate plant. There is one self fertile variety.

      I haven't seen a kiwi vine like that before. I have 4 fuzzy kiwi plants that I grew from seeds in containers. This is their 2nd spring, and I have them growing up a 6 foot trellis that is too small for them. I haven't gotten flowers or fruit yet. Hardy kiwis are a different species of edible kiwi that I'm not as familiar with, so I wouldn't be able to identify it if that's what you have. I think you may have ended up with a different volunteer plant though.

    • @sly-ryder-dietz
      @sly-ryder-dietz ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I agree with the comment above. That's why I have 4 vines, hoping I would get male and female plants, but I haven't gotten flowers yet to confirm. There's a kiwi plant near me with flowers with both male and female parts. The fruit was actually delicious when I left them to ripen for a month or so after I picked them. It had a pretty spiky skin though and wasn't a normal grocery store variety.

They're devastating to our native pollinators because they block out access to food, habitat and are surprisingly good at spreading diseases to them as well. I’m pretty sure that the reason your honey tastes so delicious is because of all the love you put into it. ❤️

    Your bee videos are just as addicting to me as beekeeping is to you. I watch all of your videos but there’s something about the bees that are just so interesting and different! I think I have binge watched all of them 😂❤

    Do you recommend someone who wants to start beekeeping to get involved with a local Bee group/club first?

      Yes, absolutely. They will help you learn and get started with some nucs. Then you can ask them questions and learn from how they do things

    Such a good video. Which hive is your favorite?

      I think the Layens hives (horizontal hives) have done the best for us and I can go through them more simply than the other hives.

      Thanks. We have three hives one is horizontal. It was the only one to make it this winter. First year really doing it.
