@@sludge4125 Always hated mouth pieces. But then my high school help fund us getting custom formed mouth pieces by the local dentist....those are sooooo much better its not even funny. I refused to used a old school boil and bite one again haha.

As a former center I can say that AJ and Pat are dead right about being in "the pile" after a fumble. Not only would people be driving elbows down into you but would also try to twist your wrists or ankles, poke your eyes, and even pinch you. Had quite a few players (including myself) that didn't wear a cup and one time a guy got his junk grabbed and dude was trying to squeeze his balls into Oblivion. Fun times that pile,

Something similar we nearly had a full on starter vs starter fight because a guy kept grabbing/squeezing our RB balls so he got punched in the head.

Played QB in high school. Stopped wearing a mouthpiece strictly because I couldn’t speak in the huddle or giving cadence. Huge move. Never wore one in college either.

The mouthpiece does protect against getting Knocked out. Fighters don't wear a shield to protect their teeth, it's to protect their brain. The saying, "Bite down and go for it" comes from biting down and clinching your jaw so it doesn't slide. That's what causes a KO.

@@EJD339 its just one of those things I guess. I grew up playing American football and we always had to wear a mouthpiece. So when I started playing soccer it just translated over. It gives me less to think about going up for a header or 50/50.

In high school when I switched to center my junior year I said screw the mouth piece I can’t communicate like I need to with this stupid thing in. I made sure to never look at a ref to avoid that. Then in college 2 weeks into camp I got my head blown up and woke up in an ambulance. When I returned 5 weeks later my coach found out I wasn’t wearing a mouth piece chewed me out and forced me to wear one.... I agree with AJ tho. Still garbage science.

I played D-line and was on kickoffs and punts I got in the pile when I knew I couldn't get the ball to put my helmet is someone's kidney. If an o-linemen was pissing me off I would target him and never get called cause they couldn't see in the pile. That's how my d-line couch taught me and also to put a hand in to the o-line men throat

Hey boys. Seriously. A mouthpiece is worn and mandatory in rugby and they seem able to run tackle and breathe for 80 mins. Running for at least an hour and not 2 1/2 mins. You are absolutely saying something that will promote brain injury in youth. Nice job. I think I will take science over a guy who never wore a mouthguard. But sure AJ knows more than neurologists.
