    Just brainstorming your kids’ sports gear...why not have a bag (an inexpensive reusable grocery bag would work) for each kid for each sport? Launder their stuff and pack it in the bag right away. Why put it in a bin first and then pack a bag from the bin? Each bag could be labeled with the kid’s name and sport and hung in each child’s closet. Grab and go! Does that make sense?

    You should use distilled water (very cheap at Target) in equipment like steamers and irons so that you don’t get mineral buildup inside of it.

    • @keyisme1356
      @keyisme1356 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have a fancy iron, and it says if I use purely distilled water, I could do a rapid boil on accident. So it actually suggests that I mix a little bit of tap water in with the distilled water. So I guess the iron water could potentially solve that, but the critic in me thinks it's just a consumerist gag.

    Brown sugar tip 🫶🏼
    Put 2-4 large marshmallows in the container with the brown sugar and it will keep it soft until the marshmallows harden and you can just replace the marshmallows to keep it soft 🥰

      My wife just uses a piece of a broken clay pot. It's never been food UNsafe, she just soaked it a while in boiling water. You can sandpaper off the sharp edge if it has one.

    Wish I had the link to share, but one time I heard Cas ask (paraphrase), "Do you rush when you put things away, but don't mind searching a bit to take it out? Or do you take your time when you put away, but want to grab easily to get out? Let that guide how you store things." Mind-blowing because I finally realized the difference in style between hubby and me!

    Sure, I have some containers, a few for shed storage, and a few for toys and crafts, before getting more I would first try to use something I have already, buy second hand, or let some things go to free up containers. I’m just not convinced the container store and minimalism go together 🤔

  • @msmith3700
    @msmith3700 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    A brown sugar thought... brown sugar is just refined white sugar with molasses mixed back in. You can make your own when you need it for a recipe or just add the right amount of sugar and molasses to the recipe directly, which is what I do. (1 cup sugar plus 1 Tblsp molasses for light brown sugar and 2 Tblsp for dark). That way you don't need a separate container for storing brown sugar.

    Hello Erica! I am glad that you have found bins you were looking for. About IRONING WATER. Tap water is considered to be "hard" water. To put it simply, it contains salts that become insoluble during the boiling. A good indicator of "hard" water is a kettle or an electric kettle. Since it is not usually washed after each use, with time you can notice a build-up inside: white or yellowish flaky floating or stuck to the wall stuff which is showing that there are a lot of Ca and Mg salts or thin layer of brown stuff that can be easily wiped which is showing that the water can be rich in iron salts. The point is when the steam is created in an iron this build-up happens in the nozzles from which the steam escapes. The nozzles are getting blocked with it, they start dripping water with the pieces of salts and the water leaves those salts as stains on clothes once the droplets dry out. IRONING WATER has those salts removed, so there should be no problems with an iron mentioned before. For the region I live in and the frequency of ironing, it is not worth it to buy IRON WATER since the water is not that "hard". I just use boiled water from kettle for my iron.

    • @erint265

    Love the toy bins solution! But I vote against the tall skinny container for brown sugar. Wouldn't you rather have a wide mouth container that is easy to scoop out of. Also, don't get the expensive sugar saver. You could probably find a cheap Terra cotta disk sold for the same purpose. I have a cute teddy bear shaped one.. They also make brown sugar container with the sugar saver disk already in the lid. I tried several solutions, even bread. Doesn't work. I keep my brown sugar in the original bag, fold it tight to keep the air out and put it in a plastic container from DTree.

    The Container Store has a storage system called Elfa. I have purchased several pieces over the last 15 years and it is super sturdy. The best time to buy is when they have it on sale. Full price is too much for me. A rolling cart with drawers might be perfect for you and your Butterflies. I've repurposed various pieces as our storage needs change. It's pretty much all I use and it works since I decluttered! Worth a thought. If you get them and don't like the for kid's things maybe you could use them for something else. Also, I'm pretty sure the resale value is pretty good. Good luck!

    Ah, you bought my favorite bins. (16:19) Those are incredibly tough yet slightly flexible, easy to clean and endlessly useful. I set them on deep kitchen cupboard shelves and use them like drawers for easy access to small canned goods (cat food!). I've got them in dresser drawers to separate categories and contain pajamas. They're under the sinks full of cleaning products. They're on high bathroom shelves to keep things from toppling over when I need to reach up above my head for things in storage. I keep finding more and more places to use them. Not "cheap," but great quality!

    One thing about the picture organization, I think you should seriously consider where your going to store them before you decide on what your going to store them in. If you plan on storing the pictures in the basement you might want a lid to protect them from water and dust.
    As for iron water it depends on your local water, tap water can stain fabric if you have rust or hard water. I do find bottled or filtered water works just as well though.
    I hope you and your family have a wonderful weekend :)

    Congratulations on your jeans find! You know, I meant to mention this a long time ago, but if you want to try a new tweak to your health/size project ~ try changing your dinner menus so that you only have the pasta/carby nights once a week. You can switch it with asian/wonton night, too! It might help you lose weight easier & faster. Honestly, fasting did not work for me at all, so I had to quit IF. Just eating normally around the clock, but increasing vegetable variety & reducing the amount of refined carbs had me drop 5 sizes with no extra exercise! Now for starches, I eat mostly whole grains, potatoes, snack on popcorn & have no problem staying in my new size ~ which is a total surprise to me! Anyway, your new jeans look great! Thank you for taking us on your shopping adventure!! I always enjoy learning from your decision making process on things 🤗

    I’m a “Bricket” (I can do microorganized hidden storage - once it’s set up I just know where stuff goes; but I like and can live with some visual abundance/pretty color/vignettes.) For kids, I do a bag or other portable option with dedicated contents (eg, swim bag for each with suit(s), towel, goggles, shoes, bottle for lessons, that is reset nightly), but love the idea of resting them in those open stacking “onion/potato” type of bins to save real estate.
    ~
    Ironing water is lightly-scented water that won’t stain your clothing or harm your iron. Just refreshes it. I barely iron and don’t use it now, but have in the past.
    ~
    Jam jars - love ‘em! I buy Bonne Maman jam/jelly at supermarket, then use the empties. A favorite way is to keep water in it near paints for kids so they can use/replace lid. I replace water when it’s saturated and replace jar when lid rusts. American Spoon (Michigan) also makes lovely little preserves and I reuse those jars, too! Office supplies, rock collections for the kids, etc. :)

    Those are my favorite Walmart bins too! I use them in my pantry (the only place I like to be able to "see" the items), but they are sold out all the time at our Walmart also😔.

    You are so funny! I love the Container Store. Thanks for taking us there. My solution to sports is tried and true for years. Each child has a bag/backpack for each sport. Inside the backpack you can keep the required items in ziplock bags. So for example, a soccer backpack has a place for cleats and a ball. You can pack a practice shirt,shorts and socks in a gallon ziplock. They go from the laundry into the ziplock and then into the backpack. Game uniforms jersey, shorts and socks come out of the laundry and into one ziplock. Swimming can have its own bag. Googles,swim shirt and swim suit in a ziplock. Flip flops and towel stored in the bag. Grab and go. Just like packing a diaper bag. (The ziplocks are because I’m a bee. But it gives you quick visibility into the bag.)

    Ironing water!! HA!! Actually, I have always used distilled water for filling my iron. When you live where tap water has calcium, iron, or other elements - eventually the inside of the iron has build up. So to prevent, just use distilled. About a dollar a gallon.

    I had to laugh when you said that you were taking us to The Container Store because of Andy's comments in the last video! I love your shopping videos. I like to get ideas from The Container Store & then shop somewhere with lower prices. I agree with other commenters. I felt so satisfied when you showed us the toy shelves with the new containers!

    An idea for bins for the sports gear. Idk if they still have them, but years ago we had some recycling bins that were not clear, but they had a dropped front so you could stack them up and see what was in there..... and it was easy to toss your paper or bottles or cans in. I know one time we had some that had a clear flap door thing, but it was removable so we just took them off.

      If you want to see the kind of bin I'm talking about, Mind Your Matters put out a Tiny Tidy Tyesday video that has them on the thumbnail!

    Clutter Bug is so helpful! I'm a mix between cricket and ladybug. I need everything hidden and would prefer micro categories, but because my husband and daughter are butterflies and need macro organizing out they can see we had to compromise. I need it away but live with it all in a macro way. Otherwise they'd never put things away and I'd be annoyed.

    Brown sugar - put a heel of bread into the container. Keeps it soft.

    My son's chest of drawers until age 5 was those stacking plastic baskets. They wetr cheap (not from container store) and served well. I get the I wants. I'm the same way, until I started minimizing and organizing and tealized how many duplicates I had. Buy some jam, use the jar. I have 4 or 5 I've kept and put spices in. And yay for you skipping bags.
