    Just a tip if you have to replace the serpentine belt 1998 k1500 ,and you or parts person dont know which fits because there's two . The higher amp rated alernator belt fits no matter which alternator your truck has. It might save you a trip home and the frustration to find what amperage alt your truck has.

    Is it imperative that the entire belt is removed? Or could I just leave the belt on the rest of the pulleys while I work on the alternator and just make sure the belt is all in place before tightening?

      I have left mine rest on the pulleys while working on replacing pulleys and etc, as long as you get it back on all the pulleys I wouldn’t see why would it be a issues

    On second thought Thanks 1A and 2 other things: 1. I used a 1/2" box end on the tensioner and pressed straight down to free up the belt. 2. The front alternator brackets have sleeves in them. With the old alternator out, I tapped the sleeves back with a hammer to allow the new alternator to more easily fit. When you tighten the bolts the sleeves will again press against the new alternator

    Used this video to replace my 1996 GMC alternator. Best tips are to not remove the belt unless you are replacing, and tap the mounting bushings back a little to help with ease of reassembling new alternator.

    Thank You A1 - always informative - 7.4 liter uses 1/2" on everything - bolts and nuts. Tensioner pulley is forced straight down to loosen up to remove or replace belt

    Question, why completely remove the belt? Why not just slip it off tge alt' and just let it down, then be careful it's still on right when putting back on?

    • @1AAuto

      +Sherri Cabinaw If you believe you purchased the wrong size alternator I would not recommend installing it as it could cause issues/damage to your vehicle. Please check with the seller to confirm the part is correct first.

    My 96 3500 7.4L has an alternator with a single thinner wire attached to a screw on the alternator that disappears somewhere into the firewall. Any idea what it is for / does? The mechanic who installed the alternator, did not remove the NEG battery cable first, and it 'sparked', and now there is no continuity, and I don't find any blown fuses either. Thank you!

  • @mightymike850

    Can you tell me what the wire that clips into the back is for? Thanks

    • @1AAuto
      @1AAuto  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Owen The three wire types in a three-wire alternator include the battery positive wire, the voltage sensing wire, and the ignition input wire. The battery positive wire connects to the starter. The voltage sensing wire connects to the battery, and the ignition wire connects from the alternator to the key switch
      Thanks for watching.

    Didnt have to remove the belt. Just take it off the alternator pulley and move it out of the way. Unless your replacing the belt too
