    The BIGGEST mistake that Myrtle Beach ever made in it's History is letting the Pavilion get tore down. So much history lost due to greed. I wish someone would come along and rebuild it back just the way it was. That person would be the ultimate hero.

    I'm from Myrtle Beach and grew up with a unique experience. My father was was a commercial sign artist and had a shop in the neighboring town of Conway. From the late 1970s to the early 1990s he created and maintained all of the signage for the Pavilion. I grew up practically living at the Pavilion because not only did I help my dad with the signs during the day, we were given large amounts of free tickets by the management, so my brother, myself, and all of our friends went their almost every night during the summer.
    In the late 1980s my father was asked to repaint the German Pipe Organ because many of the vibrant colors were fading from years of being in the sun. He worked on that organ for weeks and weeks and when he finished it looked brand new. My dad was an incredible artist and unfortunately he died, very unexpectedly, just a few years after he completed the organ. He was so proud of the job he did to bring that priceless work of art back to life again. I miss him so much and when The Pavilion closed it was a terribly sad day for me and my family. I guess time really doesn't stand still for no one. RIP JWA & JKA.

      I'm from West Virginia and we vacationed in MB from the late 70's through the late 80's. It was a wonderful time to experience the Pavilion and all things Myrtle Beach. I loved that pipe organ and would sit and stare at it and listen to it in the evenings. I actually lived there in 79 and 80 on N.Kings Hwy. God bless you and your Father.

      I was born in 1974. My family vacationed there most every summer in my early childhood and teens til about 1988 or 89. I was able to go a couple of times in my adulthood but the Pavillion was gone, the spirit there has changed. I'm not sure if I could feel the same visiting there after they transformed the place and demolished the Pavillion.. The change is not for the best.

      I'm a native South Carolinian and so, accordingly, spent every summer going to MB at least once almost every year of my life. That stopped when they tore The Pavilion down. I'm 57 and this beautiful bit of Pavilion history brought me to tears. I am viewing this video only now because 2 lifelong friends and I were going down memory lane. I know you are proud of a fine legacy and you definitely should be. Myrtle Beach changed beyond rescue, sadly, when they took it's heart----The Pavilion.

    The pavilion WAS Myrtle Beach. I have so many awesome memories of the pavilion - the Magic Attic, the games - my favorite skee ball, the dipped ice cream cones, but most of all the amusement park - the Swiss Bob, the wooden roller coaster, the Himalaya - oh goodness I could go on and on!!!!! This was Myrtle Beach for me - my childhood. And now no pavilion and no amusement park so no me!!!!!

    The Pavilion was the best place in the South. When I was 14 in 1972 we were staying near the Pavilion and I went to the Magic Attic to hear this rock band playing there that night. They played my favorite songs by Three Dog Night " Liar " and Old Fashion Love Song. I lost track of time having so much fun that night I got home about 2:00 am. My father was upset with me , but he did not punish me back then and that was a miracle in those days.

    I stayed for a time in North Myrtle beach, back when the zoning statutes would not allow the building of skyscraper hotels. A wonderful, sleepy seaside town. That too is sadly gone. In the 60s and 70s, when the family would vacation in Myrtle Beach, that cozy aspect still thrived. Lots of mom & pop motels, easy bike rides along ocean boulevard, restaurants we'd wait a year to go to again, and of course every kid's destination: the Pavilion amusement park. The 80s brought a slow realization of changes not necessarily for the better as small motels faded away--even the one we'd book every year (Hillcrest at Ocean and 76th Ave North) is gone. Favorite restaurants and attractions started to disappear, and more and more of those bright glassy beachwear shops threatened to take every scrap of real estate. One place in particular I liked was called "Village of the Barefoot Traders" a collection of little souvenir shops in the woods next to the waterway not far from restaurant row. it was turned into the overpriced Barefoot Landing and retained none of the original charm. I remember the Marina Raw Bar when it was a tiny little shack with red and white checkered tablecloths on wooden tables with $8 buckets and it was a great place to eat. That too was overhauled into something not worth visiting anymore. In the frenzied race to maximize business these places seem to have forgotten why people went there in the first place. But the Pavilion...to tear the heart out of the city and leave the space undeveloped...not much reason to visit MB anymore. Unless you like golf, I suppose. Thanks for the video.

    Used to vacation with my parents in MB every summer. From the time I was a small child until the last time I took my daughter in 2006. The Pavilion was magical, and I loved the rides and seeing the lights. Myrtle is not the same anymore. I no longer vacation there because it makes me too sad to see all of the changes. (For the worse!) 😢
    The only thing that will ever bring me back is to see the antique carousel.

    Growing up my family would always take a weeks vacation at Cherry Grove. One of the highlights of our trip was going to the amusement park at the pavilion. The next to the last time I was at the beach was in 1978. The last time I was at N.Myrtle/Myrtle Beach was in 2011. It broke my heart. Gone were all of the charming beachfront cottages that used to dot the oceanfront. Nothing but hotels now. There were so many of them that you could not see the ocean when driving down Ocean boulevard.

    • @STSGuitar16
      @STSGuitar16 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Inlet point at Cherry Grove isn’t all hotels yet. Still a great area, especially at the point. It’s really beautiful and wide open beach as far as you can see down there. The beach meets with the inlet there and there are little pockets of palm trees dotting the open beach as it travels up towards NC. Quite scenic views. I love staying there because it’s got all of the less crowded beach but you don’t have to travel far to get to all of the attractions and restaurants of Calabash, N Myrtle and Myrtle. There are a few three story condo buildings down that way, but I don’t think there will be any high rise hotels there anytime soon. Hope I didn’t just jinx it by saying that though lol. The upper part of Cherry Grove seems like one of the best kept secrets of that area.

    I worked there in "86 under the stairs to the Magic Attic.(I worked the game where you throw a softball into those huge milk containers.There is always a trick to these games ,they had the top painted black so the hole looked bigger. When nobody was looking,I'd give people an extra couple of balls.) I was friends w/the band called The Creek(Sugar Creek at the time). When I got off work we would cruise the boulevard until 2 in the morning and on my days off we'd do it all over again.Those were some of the best memories of my life!!! As much money as Myrtle Beach pulls in each year,they could have redone the older rides and even torn down some of the older Motels and made it bigger. The reason I've heard is that Heroin and Prostitution is why they got rid of it.Why not have spent some of that money on making it safe rather than tearing it down. It's sad. I mean look they still have Family Kingdom Amusement Park,but it's not the same feeling that the Pavilion had!!!!

    Today people just like to stay in their cars with their heads in their phones, the traffic in Myrtle Beach is horrible, that's not a complaint, but before any major decisions are made for what may be erected on that sacred ground, there must be improvements with the way to it. Within that 100 acres that is mentioned are many other landmarks and once that the prices are right for those owners, things will more than likely be improved, I think if they want to expand kings hwy and ocean bvd, like from a 4 lane to a 6 or 8 lane just within that 100 acres things could be enforced maybe.

    14 years later and there's just some lame zipline attraction built, which can be found in just about every major city. Seems to me the plan of the company was to sabotage this beautiful beachfront area in order to drive more people to their broadway location, as they were essentially competing with themselves. All nostalgia goes completely put the window when it comes down to a company trying to profit every single penny possible. B & C broadway at the beach sucks

    There still isn't anything there to this day. The Pavilion was timeless. The biggest mistake Myrtle Beach ever made was tearing it down. Some of the rides and the German organ were moved to Broadway at the Beach. Not sure if the organ is still there or if it was moved somewhere else out of state.

    it didn't have to close...as talk of hard rock park breaking ground and being built, from reading the paper, b&c told city council if you let it happen, we close the pavilion. city council should have told them their tax exemptions would be taken away if they did close it and they would have backed down.it wasn't because of the economy, they let it run down and let riff raff enter the parks.....didn't take long for hard rock and the park that took it's place to die out.....too far from the beach. dad said hard rock wouldn't make it, "too far out from the beach, people come FOR the beach and when vacation is over they're sunburned and mad at each other that they're in a hurry to get home." But b&c couldn't see that!

    • @stagesvideo
      @stagesvideo  8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Keep in mind how the real estate market was red-hot in 2004-2006 and this was especially true in Myrtle Beach.
      Burroughs and Chapin the development company that owned the Pavilion and Amusement Park felt that there was a better use for that property. The plan was to build 2 high-rise condos on the oceanfront and then a mixed-use commercial/townhome district between Ocean Blvd. and Hwy.17 where the amusement park was. While the Pavilion Amusement Park was profitable, it only operated for half the year. The new commercial district would generate profits year-round. At about that same time the old Myrtle Square Mall was also demolished to be redeveloped in the same vein. By 2008 both properties had been razed and then the real-estate bubble burst. Both sites are still empty.

      While the scene in downtown MB had grown "seedier", the main reason for shutting it down was the perceived oppportunity for mixed-use development - oceanfront condos, etc.
      While the MB Pavilion and Amusement Park was a money-maker, it was only open for 6 months out of the year and the company was looking for year-round profits.
