@@thomasfransson I ordered one for my backup rollers only FX30. My biggest fear is the autofocus while we shoot highway rollers. Hopefully that's not an issue.
I've found the AF to be very stable and smooth. But I've no experience using it for automotive work. I will stop by your channel to see how it's done right.
I am going to use this lens for my gimble setup after watching your video. I was wondering how this lens would work and this was convincing enough. Thank you very much, I wish I could give you 2 thumbs up 👍🏽👍🏽 😊
Thank you so much it's mostly Fujifilm Eterna with some color wheel adjustments I believe. Some clips in the studio also have a few percent of a Kodak Vision3 LUT on top. You should be able to find lots of free eterna and Vision3 luts on the web
I’ve been looking at videos and after watching this review of yours, I pulled the trigger and I finally bought the 18-50 for my FX 30 . Thanks, great video and I followed you on Instagram as well.
Thomas, I have to said that you have absolutely honest and amazing reviewer. No so much reviewer talk about the negative side from this lens ( in my country) they talk about the positive side of this lens. For me the major issue will be the motor's sound which quite pretty annoy.
I bought the Tamron because of the image stabilisation. After realising the Tamron's image stabilisation doesn't work when mounted on my ZVE10, I'm selling it and buying the much more compact Sigma.
Not likely unless it's used in that sort of environment every day. As always make sure to unpack gear and let it air after shooting in damp/rainy conditions.
Ha! Glad to stumble upon someone else who also thinks aspect ratios are underrated. Over 90% of the content on my channel is being watched on smartphones, so filling as much as possible on those smaller screens will make a difference in my opinion in terms of viewing experience. I would like to make a video in 19.5x9 which is the aspect ratio of most modern smartphones. Just to see how it would be received.
looks a great lens , ive working on putting a rig together for my Sony a6400 & this will work great but I just watched your rig video with the SmallRig Mini Matte Box Lite & wondered if it would work with this lens ?
It will, can't remember what dimensions of adapter rings that comes with the matte box but smallrig sells other sizes unless you don't want to use a regular step ring if needed.
I’ve been watching reviews of this lens and the Tamron 17-70mm f/2.8 for days, and despite the fact that it doesn’t have built-in stabilization like the Tamron (VC), it seems to be even better since IBIS doesn’t work well with the lens’s internal stabilization. What do you think about this? Have you heard people mention it?
I made a pretty rigorous comparison between the two lenses in this video - th-cam.com/video/ExvjrKr3swk/w-d-xo.html and a dedicated video on the Tamron recently as it’s the lens I bought with my FX30 about two years ago. My conclusion is that that they're two very different lenses for very different types of shooting. The Stabilization works well, but I think a lot of people have not put in the time to learn it and/or have overly unrealistic expectations of how much to expect and how much you're able to push it before there's any artifacts. I'm sure you're aware of other cameras and lenses with similar or different artifacts based on their ibis like the dreaded wobble of the Canon R(5) series cameras and so forth. There's a lot of stabilization needed to hold a 70mm shot (105mm full frame equivalent) steady and moving the camera around a lot for video. If works great for stills, but when it comes to video there's a reason why gimbals are still popular and used a lot for video. So ibis and ois/vc works. But it can't compete with a gimbal, especially when it comes to more active movements.
@@thomasfranssonThank you very much for your answer. And using a gimbal with the Tamron and the ibis on? Would we still have those irregularities? Always spoken for videos
Haven't tried the Sony. After doing some research it looks like it wasn't necessarily worth the price which is more than the Sigma art 24-70 f2.8 and other full frame options. It's not weather sealed, the focus breathing is supposed to be worse than the Sigma 18-50mm and Tamron 17-70. And it’s not supported by Sony’s focus breathing compensation (at least not at the time of this video) Optically it also didn't seem to warrant the extra money compared to the Sigma or Tamron 17-70 f2.8 which is more expensive than the 18-50 But, it has optical stabilization and it's weather sealed unlike the Sigma and Sony. After using both the Sigma and Tamron I'm also skeptical regarding any major differences in AF performance between the Sony and the 3rd party lenses. The Sony might be better or not? But given the af performance of the Sigma and Tamron i can't say that you would find them bad in any way. So in fewer words, I'm struggling to find the extra value that would justify paying 2x the money and get the Sony over the Sigma. Or Tamron for that matter.
@@thomasfransson I really appreciate the response. Makes sense. I got a Sigma half a year ago because I couldn't justify (or afford at that moment) paying the double but I constantly think that Sony could be sharper at a wide angle and that having 16mm is more convenient. On the other hand, I can buy an additional lens instead of upgrading Sigma. Which is probably a smarter thing to do)
It's a great allround lens, but for low light shooting primarily, I'd recommend an even faster prime like the Viltrox 23mm f1.4 - amzn.to/40gvfvZ Or the Sigma 23mm f1.4 - amzn.to/3Pi8L7x Unfortunately the Sigma 23mm seems to be more expensive than the 18-50 right now. The Viltrox 23mm f1.4 is one of my favorite primes for travel and run and gun. And they will give you a leg up on f1.8 primes for both low light and subject separation.
An 18mm lens is always an 18mm lens, no matter if it's a full frame, aps-c or mft lens. It's the sensor size that attributes the crop factor. If you want to match an 18mm lens on a full frame camera in terms of field of view - you would have to take the crop factor of the FX30's aps-c sensor into consideration and use a 12mm lens - 12mm x 1.5x = 18mm
My Sigma 18-50 makes a little noise when focusing, I can only hear it at night. It is not very noticeable, but it is there (for example my Sony 35mm 1.8 makes no noise at all). Does your copy make also a little noise when focusing or is only mine? Cheers!
Nothing that I've picked up on by ear or in recorded audio. But I've not had my ear directly against the lens. I wouldn't be surprised if the motor was giving off some faint "purr" when focusing. Does the sound get picked up in the audio?
My copy actually makes quite a bit of noise, especially in continuous AF. I can't remember if it has always been like this, or if it started making noise lately... Have your lens started making more noise, or has it been the same all along?
great video, I want that lens, it seems very versatile, but I don't have a gimbal so I'm worried that this lens doesn't have oss, do you think it's better that I buy a 35mm with oss?
You could always use active steady shot for hand held. It crops in a bit but takes a lot more of the shakes out. And shakes are usually less noticeable if you’re shooting at a wider focal length. Another option would be the Tamron 17-70 which has image stabilization. I did a comparison between the Sigma and Tamron in this video. th-cam.com/video/ExvjrKr3swk/w-d-xo.htmlsi=s2YCq20zjDIXwieu Personally I think 35mm on an aps-c camera can be a bit tight a lot of times.
I would say no. But not re-balancing will obviously increase the amount the motors have to work and this increase the power consumption and shorten the battery life.
@@thomasfransson What zoom lens would you recommend to use on the zve10 and a gimbal that doesn't harm the gimbal battery? I don't know which lens is best, so far all the lenses I've seen that I liked either have external zoom or are dark
I don't think it's going to harm the battery, the motors just need to work harder which will consume more battery than if you have it nicely balanced where the camera basically flows perfectly even without the gimbal turned on. For the ZV-e10 I'd probably recommend the Sigma 18-50 f2.8 if you’re looking for a zoom lens. It's a few grams lighter than the camera body which is always easier to work with and will counter balance the extending barrel.
because of physics. The apsc sensor is smaller than the full fram sensor, which means this lens which was made for apsc would not even fill the whole frame on full frame. But Jason Wong did a video on showing how he uses the sigma 18-50 you might want to check that it. Because in theory you can use this lens on full frame, you just have to crop the image a bit so that it fills the frame. For video this is an even smaller problem because there most of the time the stabilzation crop is already enough to fill the frame
