This is one of the best lenses ever made in the history of lens design because it's almost an unfair trade. It has many positives without the typical tradeoffs you get from the small size. The biggest trade was distortion, which isn't an uncorrectable problem. This lens makes the case for the APS-C sensor size, demonstrating its most optimal outcome. But now I want more. Made a Great-Lakes-Trip for 3 weeks with this Sigma on an a6400 & a GRIII. As a tourist I used the setup with the Sigma about 90 % of the time and if you know the focal length of the GR the Sigma is perfect with it's 18mm on the low end. Only downside of the Sigma is the heavy distortion when shooting raw.

I think I am going to purchase this :) I actually bought Fujinon 23mm f2 and Sigma 30mm f1.4. My plan was to test them during week, make decision and return one of them back to shop. I cannot be more suprised - I didn't need week, not day, not one hour. After few shoots I can tell you that Sigma for Fujifilm is much more SHARPER, of course it has BETTER BOKEH (I cant compare with fujinon 23 f1.4, but this one has old SLOOOWER AF speed). pretty much every reviewer of this lens compares it to the 18-55 kitlens. I do see the point, however i think that the most direct competitor is the 16-55 2.8. maybe it's placebo but the Sigma is noticeably sharper in the center and at 18 the auto focus hunted significantly less than the fuji in the real world video tests you did. I may consider switching to this lens over my 18-55 seeing as the constant 2.8 is useful for video and the size is a slight bit smaller.... Super video Samuel.

Really good video about a great lens. It has quickly become my favorite lens for it's versatility and size. I use for travel and street, where it includes all the focal lengths I like (18mm, 23mm, 35mm, 50mm i.e. great alternative to the f2 Fujicrons). Big boost over the kit lens by having f2.8 at 50mm, which makes it a decent portrait option too (my beloved Sigma 56 f1.4 has been gathering dust). I am using this zoom 80-90% of the time, then occasionally a wide pancake or the 56.
Cool review! I really like this lens, I usually use prime lenses but I need a zoom for concert photography (changing lenses during concert is not a good idea I think especially in small clubs/bars) and some video work too, since I find f1.4 to be too shallow for practical use. The problem with Tamron is that while it has more reach and OIS, in practice 50mm vs 70mm is not a huge difference and I saw a numerous videos reporting that OIS on Tamron is seriously buggy when using is on cameras with IBIS, both Fuji and Sony cameras have these issues. So for me this Sigma lens seems like a no brainer.
great great video!!! I always see your content!!! I have a Fuji camera, I have a 35mm f2, and I had thought about buying a 56mm 1.7 from Viltrox and a 27mm 2.8 from TTArtisan and thus cover a wide focal range, the same as that 18-50mm from Sigma. What do you recommend between those two options that I mentioned? thanks
Great video. In the comparison with Fuji 18-55mm at 28mm (11:58), the brick wall in the fuji image looks incredibly soft compared to the sigma at F2.8 and F4, I don't think the 18-55 is that soft! Looks more like the focus point is on the wooden bit in front of the wall rather than the wall itself.
my 18-55 misses focus entirely like 1 out of 10 shots. my gf has the same lens and hers behaves the same. it kind of prevents me from using the lens much anymore, too many missed shots, and i tried lots of suggestions regarding this problem
Curious what you thought comparing the Sigma to the Ricoh GR III? Hard to tell the sharpness difference from the video, but it looks like it has far less vignetting than the GR III.
I am not sure if the Sigma Lens had a correction profile turned on in camera. That could be the reason why it doesn't vignette much. But overall I think the Sigma is really good at 18mm and only suffers a bit in the corners. The GR III was also not perfect in the corners wide open but corners get sharp quickly after F4 and higher. The Sigma never really was super sharp in the corner even stopped down. If you only shoot 18mm (28mm FF) than I would look for a prime lens. Or shoot wide open with the Sigma if your subject is mostly in the center. But overall the Sigma is solid.
Hi Samuel! I own an XT4 and almost exclusively lenses with aperture ring. But I will help a friend to get started with her new Xs10 soon (without having had one in my hands yet), and wonder how exactly do YOU change aperture of the Sigma 18-50. I am leaning towards recommending her that lens as a starter - her body will come without any lens! I already checked the XS10 manual online but apparently and very unfortunately you can't program the left Fn Function Dial for that, right? Wouldn't that have been great?? And where do you have SS and Exposure Compensation. ISO stays on the ISO button? THANKS FOR YOUR HELP! I suspect the best way for my friend as a beginner, would be to program her 3 practical Auto ISO adjustments and then activate APERTURE on either the FRONT or the REAR COMMEND DIAL? I heard those aren't even clickable but you can put APERTURE on one of them? ->>> Oh, just found it: you have to put the camera in Mode A (APERTURE PRIORITY AE) or M(MANUAL) so that the front command dial operates APERTURE. GREAT VIDEO btw!
I'm a beginner hobby photographer at the stage where i want to upgrade from my kit lens. I have the Fuji XC 15-45mm f3.5-5.6 lens, and have been considering selling it and getting this Sigma 18-50mm f2.8, or keeping my current one and getting the Sigma 56mm f1.4. Do you (or anyone else) have any recommendations?
4:10 The Fuji 16-80mm does that also, unfortunately. It goes wildly out of focus when you zoom and then refocuses. Can't really use it for any 'serious' or cinematic video IF you need to zoom while recording.
Crop sensor kit lenses were/are 18-55 3.5-5.6. Constant f2.8 was/is always update. Not just because of 2.8... But these days, if I want street zoom lens it has to be weather sealed :)
Really hope Sigma considers a wider lens thats bright, I use the 16mm sigma on my fuji as well but there isnt a time that goes by and i think, would it not be better to just get the sony ZV E10 and get the 11mm sony lens which outright price to price and type of lens has no competition from any lens manufacturer.
I have an XE4 and really like the Sigma but im not sure if it's the best option without the IS. Maybe the Fuji Kit lens is better in this case? What do you think ? I only do photography and not Video... Thanks!
I think the Fujinon Kit lens would be more useful on the X-E4 than the Sigma. The X-E4 already has so few buttons so having the aperture dial on the Fujinon lens is a big help. And the IS will be helpful when your shoot 18mm 2.8 in dark environments. Unless you need 2.8 with 50mm a lot I would use the Kit lens with the X-E4.
Very good video - is making me think about changing my 18-55 for it. Only downside for me is the loss of focus while zooming - the 18-55 is almost par focal for video. The attraction is the fact it does not have OIS actually as I find if I pan with my 18-55 the OIS fights with IBIS and the footage becomes quite juddery. Do you see that in the Sigma?
great video! I’m tempted to buy this lens for my x t30 II. I have only one doubt: how I change the F in camera? Is it so uncomfortable not to have a diaphragm ring for street? Thank you again!
Thanks for the review. I got a 16-80 F4 as my travel lens some time ago for nearly the same price as the Sigma. Unfortunately i did not know about the 18-50, cause it seems to be pretty good and a good with its F2.8 and would fit the XE-4 even better.. What do you think - how do those lenses compare? (besides F2.8 and the missing mm's ;) )
We are in the same boat haha. I have the 16-80 and the 10-24 f4s.. honestly this sigma lens would be great for the 2.8 and lower light situations and also I love how it’s even more compact. But overall I’m satisfied. At this moment (because I’m not rich) I can’t justify purchasing it. But if I had money to blow I would get it and this would be my street photo lens for sure.
@@tulasnaps For street i still have the 27mm R WR and my TTArtisan 35 1,4 (which is manual - but for 45,00 EUR used a great little lense). In case i want it "longer" i could switch to the Viltrox 56 1,4. Right now i'm in love with the 35 1.4, cause the whole manual world is kind of slowing me down in a positive way ;)
@@steffen_r I had a lot of these lenses and the whole Viltrox collection...and I'm missing them. I regret not bringing them to Mexico, because here it's difficult to get these things and dealing with importing is a pain. i want the 18 f2 and a 27mm as my daily shooters. I would sell the 16-80 honestly and just keep the 10-24. I seem to be more drawn to wider photos and the 27mm is about as tight as I would want to go. I wish I would've got the Ricoh for my 28mm equivalent obsession. Would have worked great here in Mexico.

My dream lens would be something like 10-400 f/1.8 pancake but this one is close
Can this be a replacement of the 16-55mm f2.8 ? Or is that one way better ? I have that one but this one with the size/weight it looks great. No movie, only photography
I had the beautiful 16-55 for about a year. great IQ but too heavy... paid for a bit less than 700 and sold for the same price, another good thing about quality lenses. Now I'm looking for an alternative after a short disappointing try with the 16--80 f4. i share my thinking:I'm looking both at the 18-55 kit and the sigma. I really don't like the f4 at 55, but it gives aperture ring and OIS, if needed (I'm on x-t4 so not needed). A used 18-55 is basically half the price of the sigma new, and it will take a while since an used one will be on second hand market. 250-300€ vs 500€ the sigma, with no weather resistance, no aperture ring and probably a more plasticky built. But god it's fixed 2.8, that make all the ranges interesting to 50mm, i remember I loved the 16-55 at 55 2.8, while the 16-80 sucked at f4 50mm upwards. The Fuji 16-55 2.8 has better solid built, weather resistance, aperture ring, it's also good looking aha. But it's goddam heavy to carry around for photography, but the higher price is absolutely justified over the sigma. In my case I'm probably going to wait for a second hand sigma, and hope to find a way to try one asap.
p.s. I'm as my only lens at the moment is the 35 1.4 I'm also thinking to the get a 16 1.4 fuji(500-600 second hand) or the 16 1.4 sigma(300-350 i guess second hand) and fuji 23 f2 (300 s.h.), bypassing the convenience of the zoom but gaining in quality.
First time seeing your video and I’m glad I did. I’ve been contemplating buying the xh1 with the sigma 30 1.4 but I haven’t seen sample videos shot in F-log that convince me. Asides the ultra wide shots and the one shot on the xs10 did you shoot the rest on the XH1?
Fuji has a very good 18-55 lens that can be very cheap if you buy it as a kit. I don't use zoom lenses, so I sold mine, but it was an excellent lens, surprisingly good for a kit lens. Also, I trust Fuji a lot more when it comes to the quality of the actual lens.
@@cyano3d yup, it’s a win win with what I’ve seen from this lens so far. You lose some range, but a whole lot of bulk also. If only it had an aperture ring! Oh well, still worth it.
Hi Samuel, thanks for your content on this lens. Can you answer the question: have you, by the chance, forgotten to turn off the OIS on the XF 18-55 f2.8-4 during the brick wall test? Not that I am a pixel piper but when I review your results on my EIZO 27' 1440, there's a clear win from the Sigma over the Fuji. In fact, the IQ at pretty much every focal lenght looks mushy. If OIS/IBIS was turned off, then Sigma is the clear winner here. Thanks if you reply. Have a great day.
Hey Jeremie, yes I did turn off IS on the Fujinon 18-55mm. But I also find it strange how soft it was mid range. Maybe my lens is not in perfect shape anymore. But other reviews also show that the Sigma is a little better overall.
Love Sigma. It’s that I already own the 18-55 Fuji kit otherwise I would really go for this ❤. Ps. Just splurged on the 85mm 1.4 today for Canon EF so I should stop watching these reviews for a while 😅.
Hey David, sorry for this late response. I would not say the sigma 18-50mm replaces the fujicrons in terms of image quality. But you can absolutely get similar images and only hardcore photographers will be able to tell a difference. It is a question of convenience and how much you value a zoom. And don't forget that all fujicrons can open up to F2! A big benefit over the 18-50mm.
I find the advantage of a fast lens on the wide end is a lot more pronounced than at the tele end. 18mm at f4 looks significantly worse but at 50mm, it becomes more marginal. It’s a close call. Loss of focus while zooming and lack of OIS though… hmmmm
Hey sorry for the late reply! But yes the autofocus is much improved on the X-S10 (and now the X-S20) compared to the X-H1. The X-H1 has very fast single AF but not great continuos AF.
Anyone who has used this lens to zoom video while recording, have you gotten the exposure flickering that happens on other Fujifilm lens? Or is this lens built differently? I’d like to do snappy handheld zooms while recording and have yet to find a good solution?
Is it just me or would it make more sense if they'd indicate the focal lengths on the lens barrel that would equate to the classic full frame 24-28-35-50? (so around 16-18.5-23-33).. or indicate that with a second color what the full frame equivalent is (similar to how they do the distance scales in metric/imperial on Leica lenses).
Hi Samuel, when you reviewed the Sigma 16-28mm f2.8 briefly I thought the images looked great and similar - sharp, nice contrast good colour but you didn't seem to like it much at the time. Do you think differently now? Thanks for your great review as always, Sam
Hey Samuel 😀The 16-28mm 2.8 is a great lens! It was just not a lens that was interesting to me because I don't own a full frame L mount camera and I prefer a mid range zoom to a wide angle zoom. The lens was a good performer so I still recommended it in my video. Now with the 18-50mm 2.8 I have a lens that I can actually use and I was looking forward to the release since a while ago.
very nice comparison between the fuji lens and sigma lens. thanks for reminding me about the other alternative prime lens - 16mm f1.4 seems nice when fuji version is the older step motor thats a little slower than their modern ones right? though for vlogging, do you hold the camera out to film yourself at 18mm? I feel like you film yourself with the 360 camera then shoot b-roll or other people using the fuji camera.
I did hold out the Sigma 18-50mm at 18mm out for vlogging. Jut holding the camera with my hand. I would use a small tripod if I would use the 18mm for vlogging. It is a little bit close. 16mm works much better. But yeah you can use a GoPro or 360 camera for vlogging and use the 18-50mm for B-Roll :)
Tamron is plenty sharp actually. Used it ok a6400 for 4k vids in studio setting and occasional outdoor event photos. IMO, 17-70 2.8 VC it's just perfect all-arounder if not for it's size - it gives out an impression of big professional lens on other people, makes them worry and stuff. Smaller lenses are much more appealing overall.
To me, huge advantage of fujinon is it's stab, which works better than ibis on video, and slightly extended range, which can make a (often negligible) difference in portraits perspective. Also where i live it's cheaper. But even more important advantages of sigma are it's minimum focus distance and 2.8 at 50mm. They just make this lens "🤌". If i had to choose, i'd pick sigma.
It is still focus by wire so it's going to behave exactly like fujifilm lenses. If you want a good manual focus experience I recommend looking at the Voigtländer offerings for Fujifilm.
Thanks. Very interesting to see the golden Sigma colours vs FujiFilm's slightly colder colours when you were switching between the lenses.
I do still photography only. A sharp, compact, constant f2.8 lens seems a good option, especially with the X-S10 with IBIS.

GREAT VIDEO btw!
will you recommend the sigma 18-50mm f2.8 for xe-3 (without IBIS) for photography only? even at low light?
This simple transition how can i do while showing recorded videos? Like show one frame video n snap to another
I came for Samuel, I stayed for the Blah Blah Blah Blah!!
What 😅?
I'm a beginner hobby photographer at the stage where i want to upgrade from my kit lens. I have the Fuji XC 15-45mm f3.5-5.6 lens, and have been considering selling it and getting this Sigma 18-50mm f2.8, or keeping my current one and getting the Sigma 56mm f1.4. Do you (or anyone else) have any recommendations?
If I go back to Fuji I would get this lens for sure.
4:10 The Fuji 16-80mm does that also, unfortunately. It goes wildly out of focus when you zoom and then refocuses. Can't really use it for any 'serious' or cinematic video IF you need to zoom while recording.
there's no X-mount lens built parfocal except the cinema line unfortunately
Crop sensor kit lenses were/are 18-55 3.5-5.6. Constant f2.8 was/is always update. Not just because of 2.8... But these days, if I want street zoom lens it has to be weather sealed :)
I still think the 18-55mm is still the best kit lens ever made. I would buy the Sigma if I didn’t have the Fuji lens for that extra brightness.
I so wanted to like that lens. I tried 2 different samples, and I just wasn't 'getting' the love for that lens (and I"m not even a pixel peeper!).
When I got this lens I immediately thought about you buddy.
Masterpiece review
Thank you so much, Samuel!
great video! I’m tempted to buy this lens for my x t30 II. I have only one doubt: how I change the F in camera? Is it so uncomfortable not to have a diaphragm ring for street? Thank you again!
This Video helped me a lot, Thank You so much 😊
has anyone tried it on the X-trans V sensor? Can it resolve 40 MP?
I just picked up a X-T30ii with this lense
I'm thinking about getting this lens for my X-T30II as well, Does the lack of OIS bother you for photography?
Random question I know but I love your Nike SB cap, where did you purchase it?
LOL we could only wish :D
Will this work in my fuji xt20 as well?
Fuji has a very good 18-55 lens that can be very cheap if you buy it as a kit. I don't use zoom lenses, so I sold mine, but it was an excellent lens, surprisingly good for a kit lens. Also, I trust Fuji a lot more when it comes to the quality of the actual lens.
I'd think the constant 2.8 aputure is what makes it appealing but yeah 18-55 lens is a damn hard lens to compete I agree
And this Sigma blew it out of the water!!!
@@awake780 oh hello there.
@@awake780 i am thinking of getting sigma over fuji 16-55 now. It serves all my purpose and is cheaper and is lighter.. heck yeah
@@cyano3d yup, it’s a win win with what I’ve seen from this lens so far. You lose some range, but a whole lot of bulk also. If only it had an aperture ring! Oh well, still worth it.
Thank you for your video! What do you think about Fuji 35mm 1.4?
Thank you for this review! Does this lens have automatic in-camera lens corrections in a Fuji body?
Yes it does!
what tripod/selfie stick are you using for your gopro?
Loved this review!!
Just ordered this lens, can't wait! 😁also, 5:31 , pasteis de nata, nhamiii😅
Danke Samuel! Great review!
Gerne :)
Great video! I think you’ve sold me
been using the sony version since it came out. absolutely love it.
Great and complete review. Tks!
Thank you, Samuel, for another great review,
From your perspective, can this lens replace all 3 Fujicrons?
Hey David, sorry for this late response. I would not say the sigma 18-50mm replaces the fujicrons in terms of image quality. But you can absolutely get similar images and only hardcore photographers will be able to tell a difference. It is a question of convenience and how much you value a zoom. And don't forget that all fujicrons can open up to F2! A big benefit over the 18-50mm.
@@SamuelStreetlife I got second 18-55 for cheap. And pretty happy with it. Darker, yes. But this is the exercise to not use a wide open every time.
How did you get rid of the fujifilm logo on your camera?
I might be interested in this lense, assuming the X-Pro4 will have IBIS.
Right now Sam is enjoying Germany vs Japan ⚽⚽ including Krombacher . Jaaaaa 😁🍭
I find the advantage of a fast lens on the wide end is a lot more pronounced than at the tele end. 18mm at f4 looks significantly worse but at 50mm, it becomes more marginal. It’s a close call. Loss of focus while zooming and lack of OIS though… hmmmm
The latest gadget always more attracting
Great video. 👍🏻🤙🏻🤙🏻
So the X-S10 compared to my X-H1 in terms of dynamic range, any difference? Is the Autofocus much improved for sports compared to X-H1 ?
Yes and I would love that!
11:40 that was some epic music
What music is that from beginning?
very nice comparison between the fuji lens and sigma lens.
thanks for reminding me about the other alternative prime lens - 16mm f1.4 seems nice when fuji version is the older step motor thats a little slower than their modern ones right?
though for vlogging, do you hold the camera out to film yourself at 18mm? I feel like you film yourself with the 360 camera then shoot b-roll or other people using the fuji camera.
I did hold out the Sigma 18-50mm at 18mm out for vlogging. Jut holding the camera with my hand. I would use a small tripod if I would use the 18mm for vlogging. It is a little bit close. 16mm works much better. But yeah you can use a GoPro or 360 camera for vlogging and use the 18-50mm for B-Roll :)
@@SamuelStreetlife thank you :)
What’s the lens at 6:47 min in this VDO? FISHEYE
Would love this lens for my Nikon Zfc✌
Is this sharper than sigma 16 f1.4 or equaly good?
How balanced is this on the X-E4?
Thanks Samuel - v helpful
"Eat this fu***rs" made me laugh so hard :))))
Digging the AF-C song.
great review!
Great job!!!
I'm dead after the scene with the gull wings ahahhaahhahaha
I didn’t expect Ricoh GR was so bad. Soft and vignetting.
how is the manual focus on the Sigma? I hate MF on fuji lenses. [ Kit lens in the uk, even used, is more like 300...]
It is still focus by wire so it's going to behave exactly like fujifilm lenses. If you want a good manual focus experience I recommend looking at the Voigtländer offerings for Fujifilm.
How to zoom wth this camera?
