Even having the opportunity to witness this incredible machine whenever it made its way to Texas was a dream come true, I couldn’t possibly imagine riding in it-excellent job on your fathers camerawork as well as having the opportunity presented to him! 👏 Very cool to see a sight nobody has seen for many years other than the steam crew themselves.
Thanks SR. The camera work was just lucky. The iPhone 6+ took some great shots and fortunately I could keep it pretty steady even as I reached outside the engine. Ed was incredibly generous for letting me ride. He is a good man.
Duberly Witherspoon no problem! I’ve ridden on the SOU 630 in Tennessee and I know how those engines shake hahaha. Ed is incredibly kind too, got to have a chat with him at College Station!
Truly magnificent machine! I have read that stephenson, who designed the "Rocket" in the UK would look at it and be surprised not at its size but the fact that it uses the sample principal of turning water into steam and using the expansion of it to drive a locomotive.
I was in the States to witness the Golden Spike 150. Truly an awesome sight to behold, let alone be lucky enough to ride the footplate. Congratulations!! I hope you are there to film 4014 if UP decides to put it on a Freighter worthy of it's power. Cheers Adrian Train Driver in Australia
Sometimes opportunities present themselves. Ed Dickens was incredibly generous to allow me to ride that day. I don't know when I will have the opportunity again.
What a glorious way to see the famous Cajon Pass, from the cab of this Locomotive who decided the Cajon Pass can be conquered without a helper. Screams American ingenuity, engineering and true grit. Woops. And then there’s a diesel. What are they signaling to each other???
What an experience sadly most of us will never get. At least we have this amazing footage to imagine ourselves in that position! As someone who went to see this beast in person, let me tell you, even the loudest volume of any video won't do it's whistle justice. It's deafening.
I like steam locomotives a lot that's why I pick up #4014 big boy maybe one day I'll be able to get a cab ride to enjoy it but I know that I can't but I love the steam locomotives horn I enjoy watching steam locomotives thank you for sharing
You gotta hand it to the engine crews back then. In order to have any chance of vision ahead, you almost had to lean the upper half of your body out the window. Imagine that in rain or snow.
Stuck my head out of an Amtrak coach window with another guy on my way up to the Bay Area for about 20 minutes as a teen. He was a White guy with glasses. When we pulled back into the coach, he took off his glasses and you could see the *light rings around his eyes* where his glasses were! His face was that dark. LOL And this was a Diesel powered train. Imagine in the daze of steam!!!
Yeah, driving snow and sub-zero wind chills! No defrosters on those small front cab windows, so they likely froze over quickly. So they had to have that head out to see! No thanks!
Imagine the heat in that cab during the summer. If those crews could see today's loco cabs with A/C and toilets and computers instead of gauges, they'd be astonished. I'll bet that even the old SP "Cab-Forwards" were no picnic to operate.
Short and very sweet! Good that you were able to move to either window. I caught myself leaning over to see better. LOL You are definitely a fortunate son. Cheers, Bob (Syracuse, NY)
In the bit looking down the right side, look for the front engine to go into curves before the rear engine. Especially in the crossover. I used to shoot UP 3985 & N&W 1218 on curves whenever possible, to show that.
Take a 2 year class on how to operate and maintain a boiler system and you could have the job of firing up both of up's steamers take a 4 year class if you want to drive them
I wanna see it pull an actual load! Like a 150 car freight!! This is like these guys with the Detroit diesel 2 strokes. They think they sound cool just bobtailing along, and they do,but you gotta put a load on em to get the full effect!! This thing is barely idling along with that little train behind it! Put a good heavy freight train behind him!!!!!
I had no preplanning on that BNSF on the next track. Purely a God given gift. It appeared to be a light weight consist that was able to safely go down the hill much faster than we were traveling. It was perfect timing.

Always amazes me how the FRA and UP rules and regulations regarding the use of recording equipment on the head end literally go out the window when Ed and friends are at the helm.
So sorry. I actually researched this and found no results. Not like it matters as it was a great train trip. I was curious if there was any violations as you stated. Kind of funny when I rode the 4014 out of West Colton to Victorville when it was dragged to Cheyenne there were plenty of UP people and FRA people on that trip too. No one said anything then either.
