I love how she labels him as having acted territorial but she instantly retracts because y'know, even though they appeared to be referring to the case, they were really talking about how territorial he was WITH HER, and he admits it! and then at the end when she says "i have to see what it is" in such a cute way, you got to love these babies.
The necklace thing was a way of showing that Mulder was being territorial with Scully, and not just the case. Excellent detail spontaneously included in the scene by David.
Besides, all of this was necessary to make it clear that Mulder recognized Scully's long necklace (which isn't the cross she always wears) that he would later find in Tooms' lair.
I loooove this scene! Loooove early X-files. And how gorgeous is Scully’s hair here? Sad that we don’t see it like that again. The best part of the scene is Mulder touching the necklace and so gently admiring he was indeed territorial ( of her of course ). He puts himself in such a vulnerable place right there…it is so endearing! ❤ 2023 and I am still seeing the series every year!
This is such an interesting scene. Mulder doesn't bother trying to deny being "territorial" but still tells her he respects her choice either way. I have to say though, their body language here and the looks they exchange --- it's insane that this is only episode 3 and they already have such a strong bond of familiarity. I guess that's the magic of David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson at work.
I think they almost had no choice to be close after even the earliest experiences they had together. It is like that thing in the Philosopher's Stone where the boys can't NOT be friends with Hermione after saving her from the troll. At this point Scully had already held military personnel at gunpoint to save Mulder from a secret base. It was never going to be possible or even desirable for Scully to back out of the X-Files department once she had some real experiences first of all because she is a good agent with integrity. I think this episode shows that very well. You see how mean people are to Mulder and his work, and she KNOWS he is a good agent, even if they don't agree all the time. Then of course finding her one in 5 billion didn't hurt.😅
He had no doubts that she wouldn't leave him like this. They were already close and they liked each other. He was 100% sure that she would stay with him. And Scully didn't let herself be tempted by those dudes
But he does give her an out as gentlemanly as possible. I think her pause gives the audience the chance to think she'll take the "out" but, she's already in deep so she gives him the excuse of wanting to see how he works his magic.
I grew up watching this show when I was young (mostly because I had a huge crush on Mulder 😅). When I re watched it again as an adult, I will d i e on the hill that they were one of, if not the best fictional couples in TV history. The actors having good on screen chemistry also helps tho.
I love this episode not only for how exciting, cinematic and well written it is, but also this is where it's the 1st time you see an expansion of " by reputation. We had a name for him at the academy. his name was mulder, spooky mulder" and the first time we see how mulder reacts to this, how mulder and scully look to outsiders and just how freakin close they are. They really heighten "us against the world" in this episode. It's freakin early early S1 and look at their intimacy. There is no way they are normal FBI partners. They're so attached to each other. But from each characters perspective here, they are both dealing with judgement and reputation. Scully grows because she initially was one of those academy ignorants passing around the spooky mulder gossip. And colton her FBI buddy shows up with "whose side are you on Dana?" And he's a closed minded ass stuck in the FBI conformity of if you're not one of us then you're nobody. He doesn't even know mulder but he's such an ass that his predjuces carry with him. He's ignorant, condescending and a little bully. And scully makes a choice, and she's fair and honest. She may not believe the things mulder does but she knows him, and she knows how smart he is, how perceptive and how he's a freakin great agent no matter what the case. Hey colton? mulder was catching serial killers in the FBI while you were working on your first assignment in the academy. Have some respect you dick. 😡 And yeah she replies to 'colton' "the victims" but lets be real she's all in for mulder and loyal to him and absolutely has feelings for him. But she also sees that career climbing hurt and step on anyone to get what you want coming from colton. And she knows that's not the way to be. He thinks he can shame and control her. He says crap like "we'll see about that" in regards to trying to remove her from the x-files. Like she has no agency and needs to be saved from mulder. What a prick. And mulder? I love him. He's brave in a way i could never be. In an institution like that with the ridicule and shaming. And what does he do? Shows up and trolls the f out of colton. Of course it hurts. He's human, but as he says "sometimes the need to mess with their heads outweighs the millstone of humiliation" and he respects scully and won't stand in her way. He values her and her expertise. But he doesn't want to lose her either. But he stands by his passion and conviction and is 10 times the man colton is. He is unapologetically himself and f conformity. But this scene is showing 3 things. The first is that the pendent is important to narrative. It's a first and only for scully with this pendent. it's showing the trophy it will become for tooms and that scully is his target. Mulder touching it like that is to tell the audience to remember this pendent. The second is that yes he is being territorial but not in a caveman way. I 100% maintain he's attracted to her and beginning to develop feelings but doesn't fall in love with her untill early S2 when they close the x-files, reassign them and she's abducted. So this here to me is mulder valuing her as a professional partner and understanding her importance to the x-files. And his protective nature coming out because colton is such a dick in the FBI's boys club. And also the fear that something more shiny will grab her attention and make her want to leave him. And i really love the scene where colton threatens to get her taken off the x-files. Man the look mulder gives him is murderous. but he grabs her pendent in such a soft "hey don't brush this off. I am being territorial but this is why" way. I find nothing derrogatory in what he does. He's trying to get her attention and the pendent is there. The show is using mulder to make you focus on that pendent and how he knows tooms is coming after her later on. And lastly the third is that mulder and scully working together are smarter than everyone else and dynamite. That they are closer than friends and his ability to think outside the box and her ability to ground him is what closes this case.
It is also the first time he gets 'intimate' with her. The pendant hangs just below bra level. Touching it and putting it back front and center of her chest (twice) and she doesn't even think about how close his hands are to her girls. I'm disappointed we never saw Scully's hair like that again (that I remember). It looked very sophisticated.
This is a very bold move from your coworker. The audacity is high on his part. Good thing she already had a thing for him bc in real life most women would think this was super inappropriate.
They had pretty hilariously non-existent boundaries from the start. I mean, Scully literally showed up at his room on their first case in nothing but a robe and underwear. And she was comfortable enough that she hugged him after and then hung out on his bed. Not to mention all the touching they do from the getgo. Like Mulder putting a hand on her lower back to guide her or one of them leaning right down close to talk. Or walking incredibly close together. I only started watching the show last year and I remember immediately going in the pilot, "what is going on between these two?!"
I dont know, he doenst touch weird parts, belittles her or talks dirty. He just nonverbally tells her that he wasnt only territorial of the x files, but also of her
It was put there as a plot point, not a character point.. It wasn't Scully's cross, it was a pendant on a long chain. Notice is drawn to it because later on it is significant as it is the pendant that Tooms takes from Scully and Mulder sees it in Toom's lair - that is what tells him that Scully is in danger and he then rushes back to her apartment.
I love how she labels him as having acted territorial but she instantly retracts because y'know, even though they appeared to be referring to the case, they were really talking about how territorial he was WITH HER, and he admits it! and then at the end when she says "i have to see what it is" in such a cute way, you got to love these babies.

He Wants to believe! At least!
It's a start!
That wasn't a Fox Mulder move. That was a David Duchovny one.
My thoughts exactly. And her reaction is so Gillian-y.

Ikr? Like he staked his "claim" to her! I agree with the comment below. This was a David Duchovny move.😎 He really is a fox!

Always loved when he touched or hugged her, they were wholesome.
She looked shocked.😁

Loved your comment! I was just rewatching this episode today, and completely agree.

OMG that was too cute!
this was only episode THREE 💀
ep three and they’re already in love Idc what people say 😭

i love that he does it so casually and nonchalantly, he doesn't come off as creepy tbh, he's just that charming

You see, 30 years ago the world was not infected with woke and me2 bullshit, so his "move" was actually super normal.

He saw the necklace bc he was staring down there….. WHY THE FRICK WAS HE STARING DOWN THERE
Have some coffee ☕☕
Curiosity killed the cat!
I remember thinking that was SO out of character for Mulder, it didn't seem to sit well with their relationship at this stage... 😞

Why did he do that? Is that the cross?
Yes. Hes just a flirt ha ha
"it seems like you're acting very territorial" *he gently grabs her by the necklace like it was a leash showing some dominance*
I guess that was it.
