I have loved this over and over. I got turned to Tommy by a fold out chart of daily rudiment essentials in still using after all of these years. Wonderful player and a whole lot of fun. The Vic Firth Tommy I’ve sticks are terrific-very high speed and I highly recommend them.
i love the way he teaches out of the box, he's not saying "this is this and only this" he basically says that whatever feels good to you is right. i love that. also love those evans ec2's ;)
I absolutely love this groove. I am still working on groove essentials 1. Have a long way to go. You are amazing. So glad I bought the first 47 grooves It is very inspiring. My drum teacher even bought it. He is a terrific drummer and teacher, but I kept talking about you so much and l loaned him my copy under strict orders to be careful with it that he got his own copy. Bettina. Saying thanks again!
Tommy Igoe is a wonderful drummer and instructor! He did a clinic at one of my local music stores and I met him, such a down to earth guy and funny too!
groove reminds me of gadd, Igoe's a great guy and teacher. Like the fact that he said "I dont even know what that is" talking bout swunk, but he can certainly play it.
New Orleans is something Tommy should mentioned to get the point across about the beat. Some people would pick up on what he's saying much easier! AWESOME!
The pattern in snare is Brazilian Timbalada clave, but timbalada is more rich in the "floor tom". Search for Timbalada, Olodum, Daniela Mercury (early ears) like "Swing da Cor"
@ThomasMetal75 I suppose that's all how you interpret it. I for one, think the left hand is more of the "rider" in this groove. All in all, they asked for rideless, he showed them this, and he got a huge paycheck.
Ritchie Hayword plays a lot of these kind of grooves. I ordered the Groove Essentials 2.0 & tried it in my computer, & in a DVD player. Both places would not play it. My computer has only audio tracks no video. I cannot find a contact to discuss this. can anyone help me.
To get left hand shuffle speed. Two notes on the throw, two notes on the pull. Two motions, toss and lift. Each produces two notes. Any tightness will inhibit the motion and kill the bounce. Good Luck!
@TheMakyoura he isn't annoying, he just tells it like it is! What, do you want him to do?- butter it up for half an hour and waste time... he just tells it how it is!!
Does this guy not look like Keith Carlock from any angle but the front. Same shirt, hair, facial expressions, just different stick grip and drum setup.
Here's one of Tommy Igoe's successors on the Lion King chair, Carter McLean, discussing and playing this very same groove! th-cam.com/video/7k_8XTVMWvE/w-d-xo.html (Direct links to the two performances: 2:02 Igoe, th-cam.com/video/7k_8XTVMWvE/w-d-xo.html McLean.)
Yes, but what can you do...technically drums in general are "riding" considering they keep the time, but he probably came up with this to satisfy crazy producers that come up with retarded scenarios, like we don't want "riding", or for engineers "make that sound red, and make that sound yellow"...in general most producers are insane!
Incase anyone hasn't picked up on it, this is the groove from "I Just Can't Wait To Be King". Thanks for posting! Cheers!
Beautiful execution! Amazing and wonderful world-class drummer!
Igoooooooooooooooooooe!
3rd 80/20 comment i’ve found in 3 days

I like this.
the pat petrillo book ("hands, grooves, fills") has some very cool grooves as well.
Igoe's a fantastic drummer. I need to work on that shuffle thing.

I love this book & CD. I love the way the charts are written. does anyone have any other suggestions of simlar books?
The only thing better than Tommy Igoe drumming, is Tommy Igoe talking about how good he's drumming.
he is the best and steve Gadd .. very friendly
If you can, check him out when he plays at Birdland in NYC. He's amazing with his big band.
@tliseth Agreed. Workin on it.

WAU!!!
Reminds me of Richie Hayward this groove.

Hey Tommy. Do you switch to left hand moeller technique on the faster shuffle?
Mel Bay's complete Modern Drum Set by Frank Briggs

@TheMakyoura he isn't annoying, he just tells it like it is! What, do you want him to do?- butter it up for half an hour and waste time... he just tells it how it is!!
I wonder how lessons would be with Tommy . . .
I wanted to hate Igoe 'cause of his haircut. But I can't. He's amazing.
totally agree his shuffed left hand is doing the riding in this groove, great groove anyway though
fucking GREAT left hand!!!!!!!
cool guy
This one is good for training your left hand..
hpw can you practice that shuffle with your left hand? it's so freakin hard!
That sounds like Stanton Moore would play as well.
Does anyone know what kind of earphones he is using? Do they act as earplugs as well as earphones?
Thanks!
Yeah for a bigger backbeat... it is a 5a stick which is small...
@thportnoy ok thx ^^

dotted quarters. Study Bellson.
Isn't the high floor tom @ 2:05 still technically riding?
omg : >
press 3, 3, 3
Did anyone else notice that he used his sticks backwards?
Does this guy not look like Keith Carlock from any angle but the front. Same shirt, hair, facial expressions, just different stick grip and drum setup.
he is probably talking about his Lion King musical work ...
wouldnt that hi-hat stomping be considered riding by that producer?

lol that microphone is ridiculous!
wouldnt that be considered riding on the floor tom. that producer should have said no riding on cymbals
Microphone O.o
Yes, but what can you do...technically drums in general are "riding" considering they keep the time, but he probably came up with this to satisfy crazy producers that come up with retarded scenarios, like we don't want "riding", or for engineers "make that sound red, and make that sound yellow"...in general most producers are insane!
insane drummer, hes no dancer though haha :P
Doing silly little dances like that drastically improves your feel on the kit in my opinion. It's a mentality thing I would say.
