- Certified BMW tech Brandon shows us how to install an updated Android CarPlay radio screen with a rear view backup camera connected to the aftermarket headunit on an E90 M3. This DIY guide also works for e92 3 series such as 335i or 328i as well. This interior mod allows you to use Apple Carplay or Android Auto for navigation system with the knob or steering wheel controls. It’s the perfect retrofit upgrade to modernize the outdated I-Drive system for BMW CIC or CCC nav screen.

Hi do there happens to be a problem with mine, everything went smooth but in the middle of the screen, there’s a giant oval of white and the contrast isn’t clear… what can I do?

Hi Sal - Great video I have purchased and installed it. Works perfectly. Question tho how did you get your back up camera theme to look like that with the 3d sensor display? I bought everything from your URL. And the camera only works with Aftermarket camera setting. How did you get yours like that?
There should be a factory menu from the settings, type the pin code and look for various settings in there. Good luck 👍

Thanks! That is a 5g antenna. I don’t know where you can buy one, but it allows you to use a SIM card to have data anywhere and use the internet. I usually just use Wi-Fi hotspot on my phone.
Great vid. One question, I see some of the head unit will reset and go back to the old system once you press the m mode button on the steering wheel and you have to re-select the music that you want to play, does this head unit have the issue?
It does, but you can fix that in the factory settings. I think the code is 8888
Very good installation. When you scan the car after fitting the unit you will get an error code as the car knows that the head unit has been replaced. How do you deal with this?

Good vid. But I wish you would have said which wire you connected the reverse camera to after connecting the yellow rca. There is usually a red wire coming out of the yellow rca connector, and there are two different camera wires on the harness. There's a pink wire that is labeled "Camera DET". Then there is also a red wire that is labeled "Camera +12". I tried both but have no picture on my screen when I put it into reverse. So while it seems common sense that it's the red camera +12, since I'm not getting a picture, I'm still wondering.
For manual transmission you need to install a relay since the reverse light is not the best 12v source.

The carbon fibre trim comes with M3’s as a option from factory(you can also spot them in some 335is’s but that’s really rare), as for the red button u can find em on Amazon or AliExpress.

Want one of these for mine but is there a dramatic reduction in audio quality or is it just minor? I’ve got the harman kardon so wouldn’t want to make that upgrade useless
The sound quality is very good since it hooks up to the aux cable you will have the audio quality provided by the Harmon Kardon upgrade 👍

Hi Sal, I am installing the same unit in my 08 E93 M3. Do I have to hook up the 3.5mm cable to the aux port in the center console to get it to work? From the factory, the harness I received is connected to the harness going into the CD/DVD player unit. I can't get any sound from the Android out to the speakers though when I am on aux. I feel like it should not be necessary to wire to the aux port like you did? I can't find that in any of the instructions. Seems like they should have sent a 3.5mm aux cable with the unit if that was the intended case.
Yea sounds like you need to plug it into the aux port.
Do you have a camera interface installed? How do I activate the active parking line?

Hey, I ordered the same exact reverse cam for my e90 m3 with an AVIN headunit and for some reason I cannot get it to power on at all. My car is a DCT and I heard that the wiring is different for a manual car. Is there anyway you could please help or is there some sort of setting I need to change within the headunit?
Check the settings in the headunit and power cable is spliced to the headunit that says rear cam. Ground cable goes somewhere in the trunk. Good luck.
If I’m not mistaking you said it was from Ali express but linked Amazon ?? Where did he get his from because ali express has a cheaper one than the one you linked but I dont know if it’s a cheapy lower quality laggy one
I don’t have a link for the Ali express one so I just linked the one I bought for my E93 M3 from Amazon which has served me well. Hope you can find a good one that suits your needs. Good luck 👍

Unfortunately you can’t unless you have single hump dash.

The screen looks very reflective, is there a screen protector film that you didn't remove? The original screen is nice and mat.
It is very reflective out of the box. My personal car has the same screen but I bought a matte screen protector to reduce the glare.

Hi , I have a 2006 330i and the Head unit doesn’t work. How everything lights up but nothing displays on the screen and no sound is heard. Everything else is in working order from the amp to everything else. Do I just replace the CCC and that’s it? Or what do you suggest?
Sounds like you need to replace your CCC unit. Happened to a friend before and replacing the CCC fixed it.

Optic cable connects to the CD player. Aux cable is for sound. Both are necessary for it to work.
Sal did you have to ground yours? I connected to back of unit to 12 volt wire but camera not working. DCT so no need to connect to reverse wire in trunk right
Yes ground wire was grounded to the taillight mounting nut.

Does the carplay ever disconnect? I am having issue where the wireless carplay will randomly drop the connection and then reconnect. So annoying! Are you experiencing the same?
No disconnections here. I only get that when I press the M button on the steering wheel, but it connects back when returning to android screen.
I am using a wired connection and mine drops. Did you solve this ? Any help will be appreciated. Also how do you set up the wireless CarPlay.

Have there been any problems with the android screen or back up camera? The installer here in San Antonio stop installing them here because he said there was no tech support. Not sure I believe him.
There isn’t much tech support but it’s not needed for me so far. I have been using it for the last 3 years without issues for the back up cam or the screen.

Couple questions before I pull the trigger on this for my e92, is the glare really that bad that it makes the screen unbearable like some other people say? I saw you say when you press the M button it disconnects you from CarPlay for a moment, is this true when using wired carplay too? And finally is the system itself super laggy or is it actually refined, like when using google maps the car and maps is smooth and up to par with modern vehicle CarPlay’s or is it super choppy? Please let me know I would really appreciate it before I decide to order the camera and unit
Hi. First of all, the unit is very speedy without lag.
The M button disconnects briefly from CarPlay but you can quickly swap back to it again. There are also factory settings you can change to avoid this issue as well.
The glare is not bad, but there are anti glare screen protectors you can purchase if you want to eliminate it. I have one on my bigger android screen.
Overall, this screen is a huge upgrade over stock and makes the car more modern. Good luck 👍

Yea that is my biggest gripe is the screen is hard to see in direct sunlight. I have a convertible so it’s tough, but I got used to it.
