"Unscheduled Stop, Special Orders?" Amtrak Rome NY

- Amtrak's Lake Shore Limited is not scheduled to stop in Rome NY. This train runs from Chicago to New York City (with a Boston section that is switched off in Albany) and usually blasts by the Rome station at about 70 mph or a tad higher. However, on March 30, 2024, the eastbound Lake Shore DID stop in Rome to allow the conductor to walk up to deliver some papers to the engineer, a practice harkening back to an earlier era of railroading.
The video also offers looks inside Rome's 100+ year-old station as well as catching the arrival and departure of Amtrak No. 63, the westbound Maple Leaf, a New York City-Toronto run..
Talk about stepping back in time to method of communicating in the Railroad picking up orders that was quite a time even in the glory days of railroading in the United States when steam locomotives ruled the rails
When Joseph H. Boardman was Amtrak President, the Lake Shore Limited would make periodic stops (unscheduled) at Rome, because he was from Rome and had his home north of Rome.
Also, when the line was moved out of downtown, the new alignment kept the mileage ratings from NYC but where the new line met the old alignment, the existing mileposts were kept in place. So, as you will notice, west of Rome there is .8 mile long "mile."
Greetings from York, UK! Great to see some more passenger train action, and shots of Rome Station. There seemed to be several passengers making use of the train. I hope they're soon able to finish renovating the subway.
That's a beautiful station. Please do feature on it. A lot of people would like to see it. There is a lot of interesting history around there. TY for the video.
Wow! Excellent catch and thank you for the information, I like them, thank you very much.
Looking in from North Yorkshire England. Wonderful video of US Railways and preserved stations.
Thanks for this video, IN the early 80's I used Rome via the Lake Shore Limited from Worcester. I worked in Rome and this was a convenient way for me to travel. I left my car in Rome and would travel home and did this method of transportation for almost 3 years. When they closed Rome, the I would use UTICA which was OKAY!! Glad to hear that the Rome Station is back in use. Yes, I also used the Empire and Maple Leaf for little get away travel while working in Rome, GREAT memories.
Very nice❤❤❤
Great catch catching these Amtraks and that’s stacker too as well I did see these trains too this day also as they went through my favorite crossing areas towards kirkville
I see that the lake shore limited stopped at this station but at least it didn’t make a real station stop because it schedule doesn’t have Rome on it but I see they just stopped for the conductor to hand the engineer important paper work
I appreciate the work that has been done. Our NY community was served by 3 different railways and almost every bit of that infrastructure that served the people has been destroyed.
I passed this stations platform many times over the years seeing it from a highway bridge a few hundred feet away. I decided to get a closer look 1 day last summer and discovered this beautiful vintage station below it. It is not only beautiful but is a great place to train watch from & absolutely needs to be saved for future generations. Go see it !
One of your best videos ever! I've driven by the Rome Station about 1 Bizzilion times but have never been inside until tonight. Nice curve ball.
Guess there was no longer a stationmaster who could hoop up a message to engineer or fireman these more modern days of railroading. Nice job with video!
Twenty-six years on the railroad never received orders from a hoop. Grabbed them out of a locke box at a station, copied them off the radio, cell phone, and land line.
I was @ the station in thev’50’s w/my grandma we went to D.C. I love the train. Thank you. Have a Blessed Easter. Hugs to Witold
Have a nice Easter, always good to hear from you. You get a real sense of railroading past inside that station. Lots of "ghosts".
Wow that was a pretty cool video!!!! Throughly enjoyed it!
Hi from Norwich, great video thank you!
Terrific tour of that incredible station, with some good train action from the platform !!
Good for you, dude., and your passion for trains!
Looks like you found a nice busy station. Lots going on. Nice vid.
Once again thank you, always something different in your videos and this one was right up there with the best! 👍
This is an impressive station building, great historical building. Thanks for showing and introducing this station building. The Amtrak train was beautifully filmed. Best regards from Germany
Beautiful video, and what a catch!! Stay well, and hugs to Witold!
Nice Job! I have been at the Rome Station it is very nice! Thanks
Cool video. I really enjoyed it. Thanks 👍
Love the history lesson Railroading Rambler! I need to to do more of that in my videos...honestly its the history behind all of it I find the most fascinating
Thanks for the video, I enjoyed it. Always like your videos
Nice video, Witold stayed home today? ( he could pretend he didnt see the no dogs allowed sign)
Lol, yes, even though he's used to being trackside, the CSX main is another matter altogether.
Back from an era when everyone tried to outdo the other whether it be the Depot in town or passenger service it offered. Just a couple weeks ago came across a guy who had transferred some older movies of the Troy NY Depot in the late 1950s early 60s featuring NYC and the D&H especially those weird little tunnels and how the tracks are all squeezed together. Hope you had a blessed Easter I'm still trying to catch up on videos
Always appreciate your comments, Paul!
Hey Rambler thanks for video, I’m going to visit this station next time I’m home. I have been past it many of times, but never took the time to check it out. Thanks from North Carolina
it's nice to know i can get from bhm, ala home to utica via Amtrak 👍🏼👍🏼
Amtrak crews seem to be a lot more audacious with the car doors than here in Canada. You'd never catch a VIA Rail employee with the door open while in motion like that!
Hello from Tonawanda NY!
Unusual consist (Lake Shore Limited).
Nice!
Another great video from Okeechobee Florida.
So glad that many of these cities step in to protect these beautiful old stations. And making a special stop to hand the engineer special instructions! How old school
"Maximum occupancy of this space is 226" (on the notice board); they can only hope. Curiously precise too
Extremely precise, it’s done through arithmetic, not any practical test. Square footage, obstructions, furniture, exits, etc etc.
Probably the conductor had to deliver a speed restriction form EC-1 to the engineer that they were going to encounter somewhere between Rome and Utica, NY. Once again, the Rambler was in the right place at the right time to record the Lake Shore stopping at Rome. Johnny on the spot.
Thanks for commenting Mr Dapper Conductor!
Very cool! New sub here. Ive recently moved to Whitesboro, NY from Worcester area of Mass. Ive thought several times to take the train home via Amtrak. Thanks for sharing.
Welcome aboard!
"EXTRA"👍Top Pics 🐴🐎🐎🐎
Very interesting! I bet Amtrak is gonna have to add a whole slew of extra cars for the upcoming eclipse. The Adirondack RR out of Utica should probably have a special "Eclipse Fever" excursion, too.
The Adirondack is running a sold-out (360 passengers I’m told) “Eclipse Special”. Thanks for commenting!
Hey rail rambler I've riding Amtrak between Utica and Rome for fun . 🙋♀️
When I was in grade school, I recall students taking a day-trip between Utica-Rome. Recently, the Adirondack Railroad ran a Utica-Remsen-Utica trip for schoolchildren, a great way to introduce them to railroading.
John Webber would love the video 📹.
Rich.
Nice video from UK
Wonder what couldn't have waited 'til Utica or be relayed via radio.
nice
Paper orders?!?😃
Didn’t Rome NY have Griffiss AFB until years ago?
Yes, phased out in 1990s, now a business park plus Oneida County’s airport
There's is 1 east and 1 west bound LSL that goes through Springfield Ma, to and from Boston, everyday. How many to and from NYC?
It's the same train, the Boston section joins the westbound Lake Shore in Albany and also departs the eastbound Lake Shore there as well, so one daily departure/arrival from/to NYC.
@@railroadingrambler218 The Boston to Albany is west bound. the one coming from NYC is north until it gets to Albany. Are you saying the NYC and Boston trains hitch up together and go on through to Chicago? Which one leaves the engines behind? The Boston to Albany train has anywhere from 1 to 3 engines in Springfield and 4 or 5 cars.
Yes, both sections meet in Albany. I don’t know how they handle the engines, however.
@@railroadingrambler218 Maybe the passengers from NYC get off in Albany and get on the already east west train.?
@@413TomaccoRoadNo, the passenger cars from the Boston section are switched on to the front of the cars originating from New York City. Only the engine or engines coming from Boston are usually left at the Albany station.
I think it was a engine code
Hey Luca, nice seeing you & Santino yesterday!
John Webber would of loved your videos.
Rich.
Great video. Like me.
