  • Calling All Cars was a classic among police dramas during the great depression and one of the earliest police radio programs of the golden age of radio. Believed to be a precursor to the popular show Dragnet, Calling All Cars portrayed the true crime stories of the Los Angeles Police Department. Calling All Cars aired on CBS from 1933 to 1939 and was sponsored by Rio Grande Gasoline.
    Program: Calling All Cars
    Title: The Laughing Killer
    Date: 02/10/37
    Sponsor: Sustained
    Network: CBS
Note: This old time radio show is in the public domain* and from my personal collection and can be used for historical, educational, and entertainment purposes.
*We have checked with the Library of Congress regarding the status of old time radio recordings made prior to 1978 and that all such recordings are generally in the public domain, as sound recordings were not allowed under the previous copyright law and such recordings have not been granted copyright status under the new laws.

Today, 50% of murders go unsolved

About 49% of homicides in the last two years, which is the worst recorded. Historical peaks were around 70%, but that rate has been slowly dipping for at least forty years now. Interesting to note that (aside from a very large anomalous spike in 2020) the actual number of homicides has declined markedly, albeit unevenly - down almost 25% from the 90s. Our population has grown a lot in those four decades, but the murder rate has declined while the success rate in locating the perpetrator has also dropped at a similar rate - and that despite improvements in crime-fighting technology making evidence collection easier and more reliable when used correctly..
My takeaway would be that our police forces are doing a worse job than ever on this type of crime in spite of having better tools. The reasons for that are complex, but inadequate training and not having the resources to spend enough time on any given crime to crack the case are certainly two of them.

"The mirth-stricken youth" makes a report to the police by phone with a German accent...a red flag back then even though Hitlers rein of terror hasn't even reached near the momentum it would reach in later years. I wonder how this story would have gone with today's anti profiling laws. Love the 30's music in the beginning. Great program..THANKS, been hearing old radio shows for years and never heard of this one.

Interesting story, and classic radio. The music was just too annoying. Thanks though.
