MARY E. WILKINS (1852−1930) was an American writer, very popular and respected in her time, who also published under her married name, Mary Wilkins Freeman. A 1903 book, Women Authors of Our Day in Their Homes, describes her as "the most delicate and perceptive creator of rural New England characters that has been written in this generation." Mark Twain also proclaimed his admiration for Wilkins, and was the first to receive the William Dean Howells Medal, a distinction awarded to novelists by the American Academy of Arts and Letters.
"The Long Arm" made its first appearance in the August 1895 issue of Chapman's Magazine of Fiction and gave the title to an anthology that would be published that same year, "The Long Arm and Other Detective Stories." Sarah Fairbanks, the protagonist of "The Long Arm", is a young teacher accused of murder, who will try to find the truth of what happened.
