      The best thing about it is that he modeled a functional interior which is the most difficult thing.

      @wandersgion4989 7 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      Shad, would you consider sharing the sketchup file with us? I think some of your fans might be able to import the geometry into other 3D software, such as Blender, and make photorealistic renders of it. I think we’d all enjoy taking a tour of those gorgeous castle interiors.

      @@shadiversity I know it’s been five years and all but I would like to know how many soldiers it takes to man all this 24/7. I was looking at it and I feel like the barracks and mess room just aren’t of a size to support that many soldiers.

    This shows that you can design a castle that is functional, but still looks good. It proves my point: we must get Bethesda to hire Shad as an adviser for the next Elder Scrolls game.

    • @JCSalomon
      @JCSalomon 7 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      “But” still looks good? No, there’s a bit of engineer in our sense of aesthetics-it looks good _because_ it looks functional.

    I've wanted Shad to design a custom castle for a long, long, time now. And I am not disappointed.

      Dumb question: Why are there three thrones in the great hall?

    • @KingBobXVI
      @KingBobXVI 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I would love, and totally watch and re-watch, an absurdly long breakdown of every part of the castle going through the design process and considerations. I assume that's coming at some point.
      For the thrones, my guess would be the king, queen, and the head of the king's council or some such similar role (think GoT's "Hand of the King").

    Why Videogame studios or makers of TV/Movies do not hire someone dedicated and knowledgeable like you is beyond my comprehension.

      Because a) videogame studios have as target group young people who focus on gameplay and don't care much about historical details or practical functions of castles b) TV /Hollywood script writers and producers SUCK ,they generaly do whatever they want killing any actuals historical facts and realism just to please the audience.Unfortunately military /historical advisors for movies are made redundant.

    Soldier :We cant take this castle the machicolation are slaughtering the men, the dragon is massacring the troops, we need reinforcements.
    Commander :Then storm the outer gatehouse!.
    Soldier :But we could never breach it.
    Commander :Yes we can, BRING THE POMMEL OF MASS DESTRUCTION!
    Soldier : But sir WHAT ABOUT THE DRAGON!
    Commander :Leave that to me.
    will our heroes finally breach this castle or be doomed to fail and let the dark lord shad rule supremely in terror unchallenged?

    It's a great castle with lots of attention to detail and everything.
    But one problem I have with it is that the Chapel is right under the dining room. If I'm not mistaken, than the medieval modus operandi was to have the chapel having no other building or quaters on top, at least for the choir/altar part. Sadly can't give you any sources as these informations are from conversations I had with staff at Burg Eltz.

  • @HerraTohtori
    @HerraTohtori 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    This is amazing. It's almost as if it was designed by someone who knows medieval castles inside and out, rather than just having a vague idea of how a castle is supposed to look like!
    It would be really nice if game, film, and television executives went through the trouble of reaching out to knowledgeable people for consultation when designing stuff like this. The details, small and large both, really make the castle seem like a place that was built and developed organically, making the best use of the environment to build up its defenses.
    I would not want to try to take this castle. Draw bridge, gatehouse, narrow path to next gatehouse, even smaller space and a draw bridge until the next gatehouse, outer bailey, YET ANOTHER draw bridge to the main gatehouse, inner bailey, and then again a draw bridge until you can reach the keep...
    I think I would rather invade Russia in the summer, at least then I would have the chance to end the war by Christmas!

    Suggestion 1: video about realistic armor-weapon interactions. For example, how much a sword can damage padded armor, and how powerful an arrow really is.
    Suggestion 2: Tabaxi of Volo's Guide would be an interesting choice for Fantasy Rearmed(since the archetypes of the other races of the book have already been covered, I think). And Turtle People maybe.
    Suggestion 3: more writing videos, they were awesome and extremely useful.
    Thanks for the attention, have a merry day

    This is a really great model of a proper castle! I've watched quite a few videos/tutorials on how to model castles or castle elements in 3D software and I noticed that most people did not even have a fundamental understanding of how castles/castle elements work, what their purpose is and so on. Therefore, I really apperciate this model.

    SHAD PLS MAKE A VIDEO WHERE YOU EXPLAIN EVERYTHING ABOUT THE TING! THE CASTLE, THE EVERYTHING!!! And would be awesome if you could put furniture and just a bunch of stuff around. Decorate the ballroom, throne room, other rooms, stables etc. And then talk abouy why, how, and what etc.

    Not gonna lie this amazing project you've made will probably teach me as much about castles as I've learned from your other videos, and that is saying a lot as you've been a primary source for my quest to learn about medieval fortifications.
    Kudos to you old chum!

    If I was a billionaire the first thing I´d do would be to
    A : Build this Beauty
    B : Equip certain rooms with modern technology ( Living quarters with Pcs, Wifi, Kitchen with a few things like a modern oven, obviously a modern toilet connected to a sewer system etc. )
    C : Hire a ton of personel
    D : Move there and hold annual Medieval fairs, conventions and tournaments.
    E : Live like a litteral King
    F : Think about what I will do about dragon attacks

      If I was a billionaire the first thing I´d do would be to
      A: Build either a giant mechanical flying dragon or generically engineer one
      B: Lay siege to your castle
      C: Have giant castle and dragon
      D: Move there and hold annual Medieval fairs, conventions and tournaments.
      E : Live like a litteral King
      F : Think about what I will do when 2 dragons attack

    I think you should swap the Granary and the Blacksmith around. I've seen this on castles here in Denmark.
    The rather large castle of Hammershus on the Island Bornholm had a huge ganary built up to the inner bailey wall.
    This was used to collect grain as taxes from the farmers on the island.
    The castle ruins of Kalø north of the city of AArhus, had a rather small blacksmith, as a freestanding structure right past the outer gatehouse in the outer bailey.
    This was of course due to the inherent fire danger of the blacksmith, that you absolutely don't want to spread to nearby buildings.
    Other than this, it's a nice castle :)

      Not unheard of, Colchester, Hedingam and Rochester Castles, three castles local to me, all had the main kitchens below the main hall.

    • @Nethan2000
      @Nethan2000 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This way the kitchen heats up the main hall. Unless the cook is terrible, I don't see why the guests might hate the smell from the kitchen. Though I would place a kitchen under the dining room and connect them with a chute, so I could move the dishes between them with a small elevator, like it's done in Malbork Castle.

    Honorguard is an awesome castle, no doubt about that. But it's also an ideal castle built in a vacuum. In real life medieval lords each had their own unique situation that they had to adapt their castle to. I think you should accept viewer submitted scenarios with which to challenge yourself in castle design. They would give you a 3D model of the landscape in which the castle must be built, along with a rundown of the resources available to the lord, the political & tactical situation he finds himself in, how many soldiers he's likely to have defending, etc.

      @00Trademark00 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I love the castle but what is a bit odd for me is the hill it sits on. It fits the castle perfectly rather than the opposite. What I mean is that you will be hard-pressed to find such a perfectly symmetrical hill in the middle of an otherwise flat land (also you need to take into account other things like access to fresh water etc.). I guess you could create an artifical hill but that would be really expensive with the technology of the time and the castle itself looks pretty dear already. It could be really neat if Shad could randomize the hill a bit and then use the now only almost perfect hill to build a castle on top of it which has to accomodate those imperfections. As for the other requirements you list, most large castles (Shad's castle is definitely not a small one - there are castles which are much bigger by land area alone but usually most of their area consits of a very large bailey) were not build in one generation or even century, they started fairly modest (e.g. Carcassone was originally basically a fortified house surrounded by old walls that survived from a former Roman military installation) and were built up over time. This also contributed to them usually not being as perfect and symmetrical as Shad's castle. So to summarize - Shad's castle is more or less ideal and i believe that that was the point. But it would be fun to break that ideal a bit now, create suboptimal conditions and still try to make the best castle possible given those conditions.

    • @William-Webb
      @William-Webb 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I thought they created artificial hills for their castles all the time though.

    • @BrenttFease
      @BrenttFease 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      For bonus points, they should include what if any fantasy elements should be accounted for. A castle on the coast isn't such a great idea if you're defending against merfolk...

    • @BrenttFease
      @BrenttFease 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      William Webb If they had the time, manpower, and resources, sure. But those things are never in limitless supply.
      Could it physically be done? Absolutely! Could it always be done? Often, but not always.

    • @00Trademark00
      @00Trademark00 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For a motte and bailey castle, sure. For something as large as this, I don't know. I guess it might have happened sometimes. But it was probably not nearly as common. Also, judging by the texture, Honorguard actually sits on a rock. You cannot make artificial rocks. And I am not sure how easy it is to build an artificial hill which will be stable enough to support a massive stone castle.I imagine this might be difficult and expensive to do even with modern technology, but I'm no construction engineer.

    Great! I especially like the pseudo double gatehouse, you have to go through it one way and then back the other way through what's almost the same structure. Presumably there would be internal staircases and walkways connecting them? How about roof access?
