    LOL you are a brave soul putting that piece through the sander. Not a pro tip but my tip, I use a piece of MDF with a thin fence for doing small pieces through my Jet 16-32. I do small cut out pieces for my wife's painting projects that have irregular shapes like pins and such. Makes her happy when she doesn't have to sand them by hand. The last project I did was a 12X18 tray (for lack of a better term) of heart pins about 3.4" in diameter. One might think the machine would spit them out but not so, at least not on my smaller drum sander. I keep a large and small tray near the sander. Now that I've seen your jig for the plane thicknesser I'll have to get one made for myself. I had to laugh on one video when you said you spend a lot of time feeding wood through the planer. I know that feeling. I have to ask since it's been a year. Did you find a buyer or do you have some new lamps in your house.

    • @MikeFarrington
      @MikeFarrington  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you. The sander is pretty gentle on parts, so I had some concern but I wouldn't have done it had I thought it was a 50/50 shot. I ended up selling one of the lamps, and keeping the other. I have a few in the house that I have made over the years, I'm not sure what I want to do with them.

  • @LiloUkulele
    @LiloUkulele 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    My comment is pretty basic....to be clear...the thickness of the kumiko is the thickness of the blade (more or less - minus tolerance). I have always struggled with getting a perfect fit between the dado thickness and the kumiko thickness. I determine the width of the dado and then subtract 3 thousand of an inch for the width of the kumiko...then the task of milling to that EXACT thickness. The other major struggle is running a series of dados over a long run...the tolerance between the indexing pin on the sled and each successive dado adds up over a long run (3 ft for example). The tolerance with one dado on each end is negligent but milling a run of 30 or 40 dados thru the sled jig adds up quickly...reaching out to all you craftsmen out here!

    • @MikeFarrington
      @MikeFarrington  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The thicknessing jig I showed in this video should get you close enough. Some times I have to come back and take a small shaving off of one joint here and there. As to the dados being out. If there is slop in your indexing pin, make sure to put consistent pressure in the same direction for each cut. It would be the opposite direction when using the other indexing pin. This should help keep things as consistent as possible.

    • @LiloUkulele
      @LiloUkulele 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MikeFarrington Thanks so much for the tip!...pushing firmly in one direction makes perfect sense. The tolerance between index pin and dado adds up quickly!

      The inspiration came from my readings about Kubla Khan. However, I have seen the 1980 movie Xanadu staring ONJ.

    This was the best and most informative video on Kumiko I have ever seen! You explain your process so very clearly and it is very pleasing to watch you coming along with your work! Please keep on making such great videos so that more people understand the beauty, but also the complexity and difficulty of fine woodworking! Looking forward to new videos from you !

    'Animals' was a strong favourite of mine for many years, the very long track lengths were something that I sought in many of the genres of music I grew up listening to. Finding the rare hour long, single track album was always a fun (Green Carnation, Edge of Sanity, Diabolical Masquerade...).
    I guess like a lot of folks that spent time in smoky bedrooms as a teenager, 'Dark Side of The Moon' was the first album of theirs that I was ever introduced to. Nowadays, 'Wish You Were Here' would be my go-to album choice. As some of my friends leant heavily into their darker and weirder material, I seemed to go the opposite and prefer the rockier stuff, hence the love for 'Animals'. 'Meddle' was just too much for me, even if "One of These Days" is an absolute belter.

    • @MikeFarrington
      @MikeFarrington  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Animals is great, no question there. The Wall was my first exposure to Pink Floyd. When I find a band that I really like, I tend to go through phases where sometimes I like stuff from one point in their career and then find myself liking stuff from a different point. Rush and Pink Floyd are two perfect examples of bands that had really different sounds over the years. All of it good, some I like better at different points.

    Well, now i have another project added to my growing list of things i want to try. All that while i'm sitting here dragging my feet on a kitchen table project. It's been sitting in my garage for two months after warping slightly. Amazing how somewhat small problems completely derail my projects. I'm lucky that my wife doesn't throw a fit about the cars being in the driveway. CO hasn't gotten all that much snow this year, so i guess that's why she's being more understanding.
    Anyway - love your videos. Great work.

    Beautiful. This video makes me think. . . I work in Industrial automation where robots and machines are the builders. Given this perspective, I'm fascinated with things hand-made. Especially with processes that are BETTER suited for a human hand, than a machine's. It's possible a machine could be built to assemble Kumiko but economies of scale wouldn't allow it. There is an intrinsic currency embedded in things like this, especially when the things have beauty. It exists because shortcuts don't. (Besides a super-secret table saw sled) Anyways awesome video and congrats on the FWW article!
