भक्ति आन्दोलन मध्‍यकालीन भारत का सांस्‍कृतिक इतिहास में एक महत्‍वपूर्ण पड़ाव था।
इस हिन्‍दू क्रांतिकारी अभियान को शंकराचार्य, चैतन्‍य महाप्रभु, नामदेव, तुकाराम, जयदेव रविदास,भगत नामदेव ,गुरु नानक ,तुलसीदासऔर संत कबीर दास ने और अधिक मुखरता प्रदान की। पन्द्रहवीं शताब्दी के अन्त से पहले महापुरुष शंकरदेव जी ने असम में ‘नव वैष्णव धर्म’ एवं भक्ति का प्रचार करना प्रारम्भ किया ।उनके द्वारा चलाये गये इस व्यापक धार्मिक आन्दोलन को ही ‘नव वैष्णव धर्म’ की संज्ञा से अभिहित किया जाता है ।
Srimanta Sankardev was a 15th-16th century Assamese polymath: a saint-scholar, poet, playwright, social-religious reformer and a figure of importance in the cultural and religious history of Assam, India. He is widely credited with building on past cultural relics and devising new forms of music,theatrical performance (Ankia Naat, Bhaona), dance (Sattriya), literary language (Brajavali). Besides, he has left an extensive literary oeuvre of trans-created scriptures (Bhagavat of Sankardev), poetry and theological works written in Sanskrit, Assamese and Brajavali. The Bhagavatic religious movement he started, Ekasarana Dharma also called Neo-Vaishnavite movement.Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardev inspired the Bhakti movement in Assam just as Guru Nanak, Ramananda, Namdev, Kabir, Basava and Chaitanya Mahaprabhu inspired it elsewhere in the Indian subcontinent.
His magnum opus is his Kirtana-ghosha, a work so popular that even today it is found in many household in Assam. It contains narrative verses glorifying Krishna meant for community singing.
