I love how this ending goes against the grain of nearly every other Hollywood romance of the time. In any other film, Julia would’ve won. But in this film, she gives up. It’s much more realistic. It’s life.
I was telling a friend about this movie and she was furious that Julia Roberts didn't get the guy. I thought it's ok to not get the guy sometimes. Michael was what she thought she wanted but she really just needed her best friend George. And you can't ask for a better best friend than one who helps you do the right thing even when you don't want to.
The fact that George hung back and was there for her in this moment is beautiful. People come and go but true friends will be there for you, even when you are trash. George didn't lose faith in that she would do the right thing.
I gave up my best friend and contemplated if it was the right choice but now over a year in the future I can say that it was the right thing. I won new friends that actually really care about me and are interested in what I'm saying. I'm really appreciative of that!
@@user-ml4ps5cq3v you might wanna re read that again, I believe she was implying about george thus the caring friend in this scene. Cool it off a little bit, your hate towards the mc may be clouding your comprehension lol.
This sentence always gets me: "Maybe there won't be marriage, maybe there won't be sex, but by God, there will be dancing". In my interpretation, it means that maybe I won't live my life the way society expects me, and maybe not everything will go to plan, but oh yes, I'm going to live my life to the fullest.
I love that this movie is like a rom com from the villains perspective, but it still gives a happy ending. The first time I saw this I cried because of the faith this movie has in friendship.
I saw it in a movie theater when it originally came out. Cameron wasn't very famous then and it was kind of expected that Julia's character Julianne would win the guy. Great point you made that Julianne was a villain and it was told from her perspective as well as what you said about the movie and friendship. George showed up for her and they danced. Julia, Cameron and the other cast were terrific. I like the ending and would have liked if there was more of Phillip Ingram singing I Say a Little Prayer.
Even the fact that she lets him go in the end means she values their friendship even more than she romantically wants him, and if that's going to hurt him, she's willing to let that go, that's love! ❤
I remember the first time I saw this film, I shouted “Nooo!” at the ending! I was (like other people?) expecting Jules and Michael to end up together. Over time, I realise that this is actually the perfect ending. There is a sense of realism to it (in real life, Michael would have married Kimmy, not Jules) and like other people have said in the comments, it’s beautiful that George was there for Jules in this moment. You might not get the guy you want but you should dance with your friends and enjoy the moment anyway. 💖
George has the best lines in the movie.. When Michael is running after Kimmy, and Jules is running after Michael, him shouting "And who's running after you?" is the best line in the movie IMHO.
I saw this movie as a child and it really made me realize that you don't have to feel rushed to find "the one" as long as you have people like George in your life who love you and care for you
0:19 oh the way he softly says “bye” kills me. It was so intimate; their friendship is probably over or won’t be the same but he will always think of her fondly. The fact that he knew exactly where she was means he was looking for her on the balcony right before the bouquet toss. He sure as shit wasn’t going to leave without hugging her. Oh this movie 😩
I love the look Jules gives when George says, “What the hell, life goes on.” She glances down like she knows what he says is true, but it still hurts. Her facial expressions are everything in this scene!
Here October 2024 and this is still my favorite scene in a Rom Com😊. Such a feel good scene and also a moment that shows that no matter what a good friend will always be there for you in your lowest moments ❤
Watching this scene for the hundredth I realize that George gave her a new song. She gave the old song away, but she has a new one that she can dance to, which in a way is perfect. She gave away the song just as she let go of what she thought her relationship should be and the new song is marking the beginning of embracing what unexpected joy will come. And also reminds her of her good friend who was and continues to be there to support and love her.
George is a great friend! He knows he may not be her romantic lead, but he's there to make her smile and bring joy to something he knew would be hard for her. :D
I really like this ending. It's just so iconic. Bittersweet. Reminds me that life doesn't always go your way. And that is OK. Be strong, smile and move on. You'll find your happiness one day.
Such a beautiful ending it was. You can feel the pain and the hope in it. She didn't have the ending she hoped, but something tells you it'll all be alright. Truly a growth moment for Julia's character. Another favorite part was when she asked George about what's going to happen. And George says "He'll choose Kimmy." Such is real life.
she gave Michael and his wife their song and in a way George and her got their own song and it played in the last scene with them dancing. Love this movie
Exactly, she gave away her song to Michael and Kimmy because there was no point in keeping it. In the end it was clear that her real "best friend" was George all along.
Julia looks beautiful in this movie. I can't believe I am the same age as her character was here. George is a fantastic character, cant believe he was intended as a throw away character
I just love this scene so much. The lesson I've learnt: A friendship like this is so much more important than a random love story that will end in divorce/break up anyway ;)
In the end Jules is truly the lucky one, Kimmy may have gotten Michael but Jules has George, a true friend who will be there for you even when you are your worse self and love you anyway.
Let’s all stan for this one opportunity Rupert Everett got to be his true self in a movie at a time when he couldn’t be his true self in real life. That poor man’s career suffered so much when he came out.
And this is why I agreed to date my best friend. Everytime I thought about marrying someone else, I go "what would happen to him?" and I realized... I can't be without him. I'm in love with my best friend.
In life, we always make new best friends… she didn’t lose Michael and she realizes she has George, perfect ending! Cause truly throughout the film George acts and is her best friend too!
I really enjoyed watching this movie. Need to watch it again. My favorite movie with her.But every movie with her has this amazing magic. She is so dazzling and enchanting here. She looks beautifuly in this purple dress. And when he dances with her to make her feel better like with a best friends, sister.
Every time I see him coming back to hug her one last time and say bye I get teary-eyed. It turns a crucial moment of bitterness and regret that she will carry around in her life into a cathartic moment that she will always look back to in happiness. A simple gesture that shapes an entire lifetime and a friend who helps her pick up the pieces. This movie is so damn good.
One of the best scenes and certainly THE best one in this lovely movie. Love his description of himself as she approaches him, I could watch it over and over.
I used to watch this movie when it was on tv all the time when I was a child, and I used to think I’d end up like Kimmy, I’d be her and my life would turn out like her so young, the guy would choose me. Now I’m 27 not married and have felt my heart break many times. I feel more then ever like Jules in this scene, you win some and you lose some and she played this scene just perfectly. This scene was truly realistic, as broken as she was for that small moment she was still able to smile and laugh with her bestfriend who was there when she needed, and that’s something you cherish and appreciate even when times are tough and you lose, just like he says.. life goes on 😊
George was such a great friend to Jules, and the connection between them was really beautiful to witness. I know the movie was fictional, but it was just natural. It didn't seem like they were repeating a script at all. The actors and the words they spoke, were done beautifully. Kudos to the wonderful writers. They made this movie as comforting as an old friend, just like in the movie.
When I was young I hated that Julianne didn’t get Michael but now I’m glad she doesn’t. It’s less cheesy, more realistic and she did the right thing. It’s still a happy ending having fun with George :)

I finished watching this movie just now. I would say that George is my favorite character in the entire movie. He's the one who's comforting Julia and tries his best to help Julia. In fact, he's the one who makes Julia realize that there's no way she can break Kimmy and Mike up. It's the harsh truth of life. You gotta lose something anyway and the only thing you can do is to live your life and move on ❤. Absolutely loving the ending, it's bittersweet but at least George is there to comfort Julia. It's just *chef kiss*. The real definition of dance the night away I might say.
This ending gets me every single time. My throat tightens up and I get that little knot like feeling in it and my eyes start to burn a bit and it’s just a wrap from there. One of my all time favorite movies ever! Highly recommend. Just watched it this past week and it still holds up to this very day. ❤️❤️❤️
When I watched this film for the first time, I didn't like the ending, and I was much younger then. Now that I am older, I think the ending is appropriate. This movie teaches about timing.
Exactly. Jules had her time to tell Michael she loved him and she let the opportunity go all those yrs. You don't always get a second chance at things.
@@mrsx7944 Exactly! And the truth is that Michael wasn't right for Jules either cause they both had changed and he didn't fit in her life anymore. That's why she found a new best friend in George.
When I was little this was my favourite movie even though I didn’t understand 70% of the emotions behind it. Julia’s anxiousness, heartache and the hopelessness in some of the scenes hit so hard now when I’m nearly 30. It’s one deeply conflicting movie to me now. But beautiful no matter what.
As an addendum, we all need to "Say A Little Prayer" for each other these difficult days. Much more care and togetherness needed, just like what's shown in the film.
I see people in the comments talk about learning to accept rejection and losing to someone else, I think the heartbreaking part is realizing that you let fear hold you back from happiness until it was too late, you wasted your time taking things for granted and ended up alone and you have to live with regret now. Julia didn't lose to Kim she lost to time. I think Michael represents for Julia the time she lost holding on to her ego instead of opening up to someone, realizing that maybe she needs to change if she doesn't want to end up alone.
Yeah, that's exactly the point. She's the type of girl who's afraid of opening up to someone and being in a relationship, but as soon as that someone falls in love with another, they become creepily possessive. Letting go is really the best ending to such a story.
Besides the point she shouldnt be at the wedding after everything she did, her character psycho tendencies really make feel that if she had to keep Michael for herself, she probably would have threw him later
Wrong, she went after what she wanted and got rejected. I've had that happen to me a lot. I know what it's like to be dumped or somebody tell me they aren't interested. She told him how she felt. He chose someone else. That's life. Maybe she'll become a sister wife in the sequel.
George was the first positive gay role model this 90s kid saw on film and it made an impact. Both a stark contrast to the stereotypes and happily embracing them whenever he wants in his own special way....
The thing is that George was always there for Jules, he was her REAL best friend. In the movie he is gay but still a bestie at heart ! Truly: You win some, You lose some :)

We know that Julia's laugh is the most sincere. We know she happy, we also happy 😄😄😄.
Beautiful movie. The way George comes back at the end to give her a hug to let her know everything will be OK, that's the most touching moment....
Sleek, stylish and radiant with charisma.
this movie hits different after watching it for years and realising now you're the one stuck in this same position
So she went from one unavailable man to another unavailable man. This is entirely accurate.
😂
As an addendum, we all need to "Say A Little Prayer" for each other these difficult days. Much more care and togetherness needed, just like what's shown in the film.
I cry ever time i see this seen , i just love this movie.
One of the best movie endings EVER!!!!
This never fails to make me smile ☺️ One of the best ending scenes ever 💕
Life goes on and everything passes ...and we learne to live without one we love
This is my favorite movie... It makes me so happy
@@willldo4she had him for many years and made a move when he was about to marry someone else, that to me is the definition of too late
I can't dance.
Never ever dance.
Just sit down and listening😊 the song.❤
I love this movie I cried when they both said bye 😭
I cried when he grabbed her and they looked at each other and he said bye- so sad
It's a Sad Moment, When She Has To Say Goodbye To a Best Friend, Especially Marrying Someone Special, Life Goes On, Regardless!
I love this ending. It makes my eyes tear!
Julia was absolutely glowing in this movie! She is absolutely stunning! ❤️
U are absolutely right 💯💯💯
It’s her smile can light up a room
2:00 George is such a good friend
I just love the singer’s voice!!!!
Phillip ingram😊
George was the first positive gay role model this 90s kid saw on film and it made an impact. Both a stark contrast to the stereotypes and happily embracing them whenever he wants in his own special way....
I don't know why I always cry at the end😢
I love that scene. One of my favorite movies.
Love this ending. So unexpected and perfect. Nogalisic with humour and joyous!!!
One of my favorite movies and the ending is the smoothest.
Sad ending but GEORGE is the friend we all wished for.
The thing is that George was always there for Jules, he was her REAL best friend. In the movie he is gay but still a bestie at heart ! Truly:
You win some, You lose some :)
