I've watched a ton of these videos about finding my style. This one is simple, straight forward, and to me, makes so much sense. I'm definitely going to try it. Thank you Teela for your unending ability to teach difficult things in a way that truly inspires me.
I’ve watched and learned online from other artists since 2014 and you are the first artist to put it simply in a very understandable way to be inspired and make it your own! Thank you!
This is SUCH a useful video, you somehow explained to me how I taught myself to shade YEARS ago after doing one persons "how i do hair tutorial" for fun. It's baffled me for years as to how that comepletely turned around everything I had done before for light and shadow, and now you've made it make SO much sense. Becuase this is exactly the step by step i did; copy them exactly, and then copy vaguely from memory and replace things I forgot with my own things. That was the biggest turn around I ever had in my art, and I've struggled for years to try to recreate that experience of developing my art to try and overcome the major artblock I've felt since my dad died. So thank you for giving me a breakdown of exactly how I CAN intentionally do that again. Hopefully I'll get my art back thanks to you
wow... 40 yrs ago in art class we had to choose a Master work to copy as perfect as we could. Then write up what we learned from it. I choose a Dali and realized a lot of his colors don't touch.. there is a paperthin line of background color between. But never thought to try that exercise in this way. Wish I had... this is perfect way to discover what you like and why!
I also love Maru Godas!! Her acrylic travel sketches are so cool! I really loved how you combined what you liked from both their styles. I love the second flower you did. Honestly this is one of the best lessons on how to develop your own style, that I have ever seen. I am becoming a big fan of your videos and your perspective on creatng art. Thank you❤❤❤
Very clever 🧠. I was already doing part of this process, unconsciously, until now. Sometimes I feel like copying a drawing that I like and I learn from it : what I like, what I don't, why this shape, this shadow, alternative ways to draw something... (as artists and more specifically painters have always learned throughout History). But I was missing the part where I have to choose something very different from what I want to paint! This is awesome and definitely a huge step forward, it makes this copying process open to my own creativity and defining my own style! Thank you Teela 💌
So good! I realized I do exactly this, not necessarily to get to my own style, but to see what I got from what I watched. Sometimes, I don't have time or have the tools with me when I watch a video, so when I get to my ipad, I just try to replicate what I learned from memory! Thanks for this powerful video!
Your tutorials over the last several years has taught me SO MUCH! I've finally landed on something I consider my own original style. This video has definitely arrived at the perfect time as I continue to really focus in on what I love to draw and how i love to draw it.
Teela, I was following your content very long time ago, and I'm so glad I've recently discovered you again! This video is a gem, you gave as an exercise, something we can actually do to find a style that we like. People usually say to just draw more, which doesn't help a lot if you are stuck doing the same thing.
This was great! One of the most helpful I’ve seen about how to find your style! Now I just have to break it down to a couple artists I truly love. Thanks Teela!
You’re awesome Teela for making finding your style possible for creatives in easy, practical ways! I feel like these types of videos are the foundational principles of art and design! Thanks for stepping away, well kinda, from your iPad to bring us these lessons. Btw, your smile at the end is super cute. 😊
Gosh this was so great! I’ve watched your videos for years and have always been concerned I never knew “my style”, but this broke it down so perfectly. I absolutely loved the video format too. Thank you, Teela!
Such a nice inspiration, looking forward to enjoy the same tip as you have discovered so much incredible process, especially on the lettering elements! 😀
I LOVE, LOVE LOVE this exercise, I always knew I had to grab from inspiration from different artist that I admire, but I like this exercise which makes much more sense, and so much better to adapt and develop own style. I am going to try this. Thanks Teela!
And it’s also important to not to be so deep in your universe not to realize that what you started with at the beginning of the exercise doesn’t look much different than the end result. The differences are too fastidiously detailed and undifferentiated by a general audience. This is why I recommend illustrators study graphic design. There’s a broader breadth of visual styles to pull from that when combined really kick up the personal uniqueness to stand out.
This is extremely valuable...BTW I did a lot of this steps taking your work as an inspiration in the last few years :-) and it helped me evolve my work
This seemed to me to be a great idea. So without sneaking a peek onwards. The first illustrator that came into my mind was Aubrey Beardsley… who I much admired stylistically from when I was a teenager(and that is a very long time ago!) Help! I have just copied a figure in this style and then referred back to your tutorial to see what happens next. This will be a true challenge . But I have already learned a lot by trying to reproduce the original ink drawing to digital, not to mention the precision required. Now I must recreate from memory- wish me luck. Thank you very much for this original idea . I am sure it will be so worthwhile.
I do not have an art background I am43 and I have started to practise art once again. Deciding not to choose the regular income streams I chose to make a living from art. This video is very encouraging wrt finding your style, the process you showed should be helpful. Today I will try the process but I would like to know one thing which is, you could differentiate the styles of different artists. As you might have an art background. But for me it was difficult to identify the style. Like texture used, loosely drawn etc. I wanted to know how should I get to know about the different styles of the artists. Can you make a video helping out with this point? Its a request. I am following you on youtube.
Do you have any additional books (beside the flower color guide) or do you have a section on your site with all the floral books your recommend (like you do with your lettering books)? I’m super into florals and am looking for a good resource (or more!) that I can always have on hand and reference! LOVING all your pattern resources and florals and videos, especially the pattern course!!
The flower color guide has def been my fav but I also loooove a book called Cut Flower Garden (not necessarily a reference book, but I use it like one sometimes!): amzn.to/3wrFVvt

I was really hoping someone would find that as funny as we thought it was! 😂

Great lesson. Thank you. I think it’s time for me to hit the 2nd hand bookstore for references and inspiration.

Lol'd at desktop. :)
Also, can't wait for next week's video!
That’s interesting. Thank you
When teaching secondary design and illustration students, what elements and principles would you ask them to consider when analyzing an artists style?
I personally look at composition, color, texture + material use as it relates to the purpose it was created for 👍
Do you have any additional books (beside the flower color guide) or do you have a section on your site with all the floral books your recommend (like you do with your lettering books)?
