    "I'm glad its you."........What a beautiful line and a beautiful scene.......both characters actually love each other.....Sullivan could barely pull the trigger on Rooney.

      He understood that John loved his son and never would be able to condone his murder. John died for that reason. He died without having the guilt of knowing he gave the ok to have his son killed.

      In a couple of years Prohibition would be over anyway. They are would have to find another source of that large income. Also, in a few short years, Nitti killed himself rather than go to prison.

    My favorite line by Newman ever.
    His failure as a father to his natural son, his pain at having to force his adopted son to kill the only dad he's ever known, all that pain is shown in Newman's eyes.
    My favorite Newman role ever.

    He never did anything about Connor stealing from him so Connor killed Finn who knew he was stealing and Michael saw it. Then Connor killed Michael's wife and son trying to cover it up and if Rooney had done something about the stealing Michaels wife and son would still be alive. Maybe it was his quilt saying I forgive you for killing me.

    "this is the life we chose, the life we lead, and there is only one guarantee. None of us will ever see heaven"
    That line defines the film. what a great quote for all gangster films.

      @SSNebula 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@inuyashason81 that reply just shows that he truly did love his son the same! He thought of his boys the same but treated Micheal different not because of any hostility but because he never wanted his son being like his father and in the end he wasn't! Couldn't pull the trigger and rest is history 😩

    Brilliant plan.. killed the driver, then locked car doors from inside to prevent escape. That Thompson shooting awesome. Cut those amateurs down like dogs. Would love to have seen some of his missions for Mr. Roooney. Was sad to see him kill Mr. Rooney. Really loved him. Great scene from great movie.

    • @akirak1871
      @akirak1871 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Mr. Rooney really should have hired better bodyguards... When the shooting starts, what do they do? Don't make any effort to get Mr. Rooney to safety, don't take cover themselves, don't run around the block and try to get the assailant from behind... Just stand there under the streetlight while a guy in the shadows mows them down. Haha.
      Kidding aside, it really is one of the greatest scenes in one of the greatest movies of all time. It's a shame that this isn't up there with Goodfellas and The Godfather.

  • @rr7firefly
    @rr7firefly 5 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    The movies's cinematography was spectacular. Conrad Hall won the Oscar for Best Cinematography (posthumously). To establish the lighting of scenes in Road to Perdition, the paintings of Edward Hopper were a source of inspiration. Mendes and cinematographer Hall sought to convey similar atmospheric light for the many scenes, applying a "less is more" mantra. Hall also shot at wide apertures that retained one point in the depth of field sharply focused. He believed the technique provided an emotional dimension to a scene. He also used unconventional techniques to create unique lighting effects. One method was using black silk in daylight exterior scenes to render the light with an in-shade look.

      That's so cool to read... I always thought that parts of the movie have that Nighthawks vibe about them. Certainly a movie with just astounding and exceptional cinematography.

    The scene with the rain in my opinion is the greatest shot scene in movie history. You can hear the rain and silence as the bullets fly and the bodies fall. That silence rather than the sound of the machine gun is amazing followed by IM GLAD IT WAS YOU. Amazing.

    Sullivan - He murdered Anne and Peter.
    Rooney - There are ONLY murderers in this room! MICHAEL, open your eyes.There is only one gaurantee, none of us will ever see heaven.
    Some of the greatest lines of any movie ever made. Made even more classic by the irony of its setting being the basement of a church.

    The movie is about Fathers and Sons. Unconditional love. On the surface vengeance looks to be the theme. But it isn’t. Redemption isn’t as well. Mike wanted his son safe. Conner being alive meant he never would be. Rooney’s protection of his son was unconditional love. He chose his blood instead of an adopted son. Which we all would do. At least I think.

    That subtle smile Newman makes when he realizes it's Mike behind him - knowing that even though he's already going to hell that he wouldn't have Mike killed in a house of God, nor would Mike try to kill him - it's like a little "that's my boy" moment.

    Wisdom. There are only murderers in this room and none of us will see heaven. As the bible says, Romans 3:10 - As it is written: “There is none righteous, no, not one", but some will see heaven, those who reliquish faith in self works and instead allow the substitutionary death of another.... Romans 6:23 - For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

    They had no idea where the gunfire was coming from, or how many gunmen they were facing. Remember when Rooney tried to open the door and found it locked? They didn't just started staring down the street, they started looking in every direction. They only could see what was within a few feet of them because they were standing directly underneath a streetlight. Hiding behind the car would have been pointless.

    Yes - He means he's glad that Tom Hanks' character was the one to kill him, not someone else. Newman's character knew the dangers of the life he chose and that he could be killed by anyone - he was just glad it was Hanks.
