it pains me to agree with most of your points. Problem is, if his path was the HOF, it wouldn’t be from scoring for everything you pointed out however, if he specialized in other aspects of the game the same way Dennis Rodman (same height) did and get lucky to play on stacked teams that win chips, I can see that happening.

    • @politicfrog
      @politicfrog ปีที่แล้ว +3

He scored 48 pts without free throws. Shaq even praise him before his death that he is so tough to guard on the paint. It's pretty weird coz he had a smooth touch in the paint but maybe his big hand and his form struggles him to shoot on ft line. But you can see he adjusted it on his left hand and even if he just try it he would make it coz he has the touch of scoring the ball. He is a scoring machine average 32 a game leading the whole NCAA higher than Shaq. Gathers was expected to be the no.1 or 2 in the draft to compete with Derick Coleman. Coleman honestly said that Gathers would be the no.1 with a mile. That's how great Gathers is as a basketball player.

I was honored to have attended LMU with these magical players and our record making and breaking fast break team. I was fortunate to have classes with Bo and Hank and to count both as friends. That time in our school's sports history was among the best, most fun, most exciting times of my young life. To this day, I think of Bo and Hank fondly and remembering Hank's collapse and death at the game still elicits tears. I just watched Gonzaga, one of our rivals back then, beat UCLA in a turnaround 2nd half. It made me nostalgic so I came here. Long live the legacy of our very special team. 🎉🦁❤

We were at games in the old Alumni Memorial Gym as far back as I can remember. 3 of his 4 kids (me and my two brothers) attended there, as well as his granddaughter. My dad was entered into the LMU Basketball Hall of Fame as the program's most loyal supporter-and when he died, we found a box that had every stat sheet for every home game of the 89-90 season, as well as all of the articles from Smith and Street and the LA Times, including Conrad's drawing of the guys in the huddle, and Mike Downey's column after they lost to UNLV. while the sentiment was touching, i didn't like when they showed him actually dying. That was in poor taste. ESPN didn't care to think maybe a family member or friend could be watching and it would tear them up?
You should never use ones death for views and likes, it's poor ethics. They could have had the same impact, without showing the moment when he collapsed on the basketball court, gasping for air as he died.

I'm not sure you can tell the story without showing it to convey just how shocking it was. It was shown repeatedly when it actually happened

@@WhiskeySamMcGee That makes no sense whatsoever. people don't need to see someone actually DYING to feel a sense of loss.
This is simply "sensationalizing" ones death.
Even one clip that shows Hank gathers being whisked away in a stretcher with his feet showing, would have sufficed.
This notion that we have to see such "graphic" displays of someone dying is just people that have a sick and twisted obsession with death.
There was nothing to be gained by showing that poor man dying but views and selling advertisements to the public.
Just because you're a person with no ethics and basic humanity, doesn't mean everyone else doesn't.
I watched this, because i had no idea they would show him DYING!
We all know when he died, why he died and how he died. I don't need to actually SEE HIM DIE!
And your excuse that they showed it repeatedly at the time is equally pitiful. You do know that as a people, we should want to grow and do things better in society as time progresses, right?
By your logic, Hank gathers, a black man, should not have been a free man and still a slave, along with some 40 million black people in America, because as you put it, " It was shown repeatedly when it actually happened"
Yeah, at the time black people were enslaved and had no rights, it was widely accepted! And even when black people were free, "JIM CROW" laws were the law of the land!
So there goes your false and flawed logic....

videogameboutique It happened during a game in the middle of his conference’s tournament. It was literally the lead story on SportsCenter that night (that’s actually Berman anchoring in the clip; getting him on SC after football season was already a rarity by then). Not airing the footage was so not even considered at the time.

Side story...in 2000 I was an all state PG. Had scholarships to EVERY school in the country (except UNC). I never signed a letter of intent because I was holding out for UNC. I was also being pushed to skip and go right to the draft....I then tore both knees At the same time.
Every scholarship offer was gone. The ONE and ONLY school to keep their offer to me?...Loyola Marymount.
I didnt take it but I have a place for that school in my heart.
I graduated from FIU and became a lawyer and now running for office.

I was enthralled with UNLV's offense and Amoeba Defense that Bo Kimball and Hank Gathers were just on the back burners for me. I remember when Bo's left handed FT was THE THING during that tournament. I soon became a fan with their Cinderella story. Gathers and Xavier McDaniel (I believe) were the only players to lead NCAA in pts and rebs at that time. Paul Westphal's offense was what Dantonio was running with Phoenix with Nash and co. God bless Gathers and Kimball for giving us two years of Cinderella magic. Once in a while when I shoot hoops, I shoot one for Gathers left handed.
