Lovely video! With the grass, stones and tufts segments this is like three videos in one! Very informative and will try it for my D&D elves. Thanks a bunch ☺️
Cool tutorial, I ought to try this! Just a quick thought though: moss tends to grow only on one side of rocks, trees and such due to sunlight/shade hours, so perhaps keeping the moss deposits focused on one side rather than all over the base would make it slightly more realistic :)
Thanks for the great video. Well paced and explained. Please keep doing videos. I really enjoyed your livestream the other week where you oil painted your plinth for golden demon piece.
There is another moss product out there that I think has a much nicer moss effect. It's called Dirty Down Moss. You should try it out, I think you will like it more than the AK interactive option. I liked it so much I bought their Verdigris and Rust as well.
I will take a look at it thanks, but one of the things I like the most about this is the ability to clean it up afterwards without any issues being an enamel which might be a problem with the Dirty Down version but it does look quite interesting indeed
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures Dirtydown is alcohol based. I can play with it a little and let you know but I do think that I can probably clean it up a bit like you did with the mineral spirits but using alcohol. You just need to be a lot faster as alcohol dissipates WAY faster than mineral spirits.
No, being alcohol is not the same. Also alcohol can strip the paint underneath if you rub it so I would avoid it. Still the effect is very cool and will take a look at them.
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures I actually have a bunch of prebuilt and painted bases that are also all pre varnished. The thing with this dirty down stuff is that it should go on post varnish as getting it wet ruins the effect. So I slather a bit on the base in a few spots, very similar to how you did, and then with a separate brush and some alcohol tried moving the stuff around a bit. A lot of the spots had already started drying but the last few I did I was able to mess with a little bit. I guess in case of an oops, if you are fast enough, you can have a chance to fix it at least.
Ah so you cannot really paint over it then or varnish it. Seems like an interesting product for sure if I can get my hands on some for not too much over retail (shipping and customs) I will try it.
Since contrast paints are used a lot on this chanel: Nurgle Rot is my go-to moss color for those without easy access to AK products. And while not producing exactly the same effect, should be a decent substitute.
1. Thank you so much Juan, you make my dream come true. I was admireing ben´s alaitoc eldar for a long time now and was espesialy fond of his bases, but always to scared to ask him for how he made them. 2. Do I need seperate brushes for enemal and acryl paints or can i use the same brushes for both? (is it dangerous to lick brusches that once had enemal paints on them?) 3. last but not least: "BAZINGA!" :D
1. Happy to help, thankfully I'm not that cautious. Please not that he doesn't do the wash on the sand, I added that because I prefer some more depth. 2. Yes I recommend you use some synthetics for them or old brushes, and as long as you don't mind licking highly toxic stuff, enjoy! 3. 😂
Hiya. I've already seen yhis video on Patreon, but going to watch again and comment on TH-cam for the algorithm. I'm hurriedly trying to finish my Harrowdeep model for the next RRR. On a side note, hope you're doing well and not feeling too fed up or under the weather or anything.
Thanks fir the tutorial juan, but i’ll have to admit that the resoult seems a little bit off to me. Not for the base, but for the moss effect. The best premade moss effect i’ve ever used is the Dirty Dawn Moss, maybe you should try it, they also make rust and verdigris
Hi Juan! Long time lurker and fan of the channel here. Does using mineral spirits over acrylics run the chance of ruining an existing paintjob? I would love to use some AK metallic colors which are enamels but I mostly own acrylics so I'm wondering if there are any special consoderations like clear coats between steps and whatnot. Great video as always. Thank you for your time!
Hi Juan, do you think the new version of Nuln Oil will give you the same effect now? It doesn't stay on the flat surfaces as much anymore, so maybe basilicanum grey?
I don't suppose you could throw me some quick suggestions for a paint scheme for the Executioners space marine chapter? There's a few blues and purples which might work but I'm terrible at this.
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures Yeah I think they are but there seems to be some purple tones. I'll see where some experiments with some contrast paints gets me. Thanks!
How do you pick that shspe and size of rock? I understand this is a demonstration, but do you build the bases, then find which work with your mini you painted, or did you have one in mind this fits with already?
me puedes decir, por favor, de donde comprar el pincel pequeño para drybrush (el azul que utilizas)? en army painter y artis opus, la mayoria son muy grandes para pequeños detalles. muchas gracias
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures that's a solid point. :P Thanks for the feedback. I purchased the moss deposits. It seems like you didn't dilute that and simply dabbed it on, but then you kind of blended it together - is that right?

So satisfying to see that base finished. Would love if you showed of a winter ❄️ base in the future
Combine this with the snow effects videos.
Profit.
But I might.
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures I'm going for a winter army so I'd love this
Hell yes nothings better than some slimy rock
Be sure it's super moist
Yes! Thank you. More bases please.
Thanks, I see what I can do 😘
I was about to start a Nurgle Chaos Knight on a swamp base, this could not have dropped on a more perfect day. Cheers Juan!

Very handy. I think I’ll use this for my Saim-Hann army.
That is a GREAT idea, it fits eldar SO WELL
The intro allready got me!

i managed to accomplished this with half the citadel paints and using other colors that were close in the pallet... thank you friend!

My God, I actually have that Panzer Aces paint. Picked up in a military model store clearance hahahaha
Catchiest name in paint history!
Thanks, well explained. I’m going to give this a try for my Eldar.

Great video as always. Thank you for your time!
No, white spirit or odourless thinner won't touch acyclics. It's completely safe.
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures Thank you, as always, for your time and patience with us. Hope you are staying safe during these unprecedented times.
Well, I just passed Covid this past week but yeah, I'm fine as so it's my family.

How do you pick that shspe and size of rock? I understand this is a demonstration, but do you build the bases, then find which work with your mini you painted, or did you have one in mind this fits with already?
You need to account for that when sculpting them
Hey Juan, what type of glue do you use to glue on tuffs of grass?
Nothing, i use the adhesive they come with.
I'm a little confused. Is that moss deposit paint different from a normal acrylic paint of that color?
Yes, they behave differently, dry differently and cannot be cleaned once dry
...and they say GW has ridiculous names for paints... 😂😂😂😂
😂😂😂
How can you make a similar looking moss by just using acrylic paint?
Take an acrylic that is similar in colour to that enamel and glaze it carefully
Hello juan
I do have a question. Did you dilute any of the paints?
Just the normal amount for regular acrylics, so they run smoothly of the brush and don't leave texture.
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures thanks! Just with water or another agent? How much would you say you dilute it?
Just water and forget about ratios, learn to do it by feeling. Each paint from each manufacturer is different.
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures that's a solid point. :P Thanks for the feedback. I purchased the moss deposits. It seems like you didn't dilute that and simply dabbed it on, but then you kind of blended it together - is that right?
Yes, that's exactly it. You use white spirit to do that
Great tutorial, to bad I'm never going to use it. I just glue a real rock on the base 🤣
I personally never use unpainted elements next to painted ones, it doesn't look right to me but that's just personal preference
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures great now you have me questioning my life choices 😄 I just like the more realistic look
First! Woo!
WOOOOOOOOOOOO
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures those tufts are really nice looking! And I agree the scale is good. Need to see if they have desert ones for my TSons army.
I'm sure they have them in any colours, tell them I sent you if you get them directly form them, maybe I will get some love from them.
: )!
