Lamar Jackson: overlooked, not a QB … Unanimous MVP

  • Lamar Jackson is part of a rare group of players who have won the Heisman Trophy and an NFL MVP Award. Even more impressive, Jackson is one of just two MVPs to win the award unanimously. The other is Tom Brady - widely regarded as the Greatest Quarterback of All Time. Despite being in elite company, Jackson is often pegged as not being a “true quarterback.”
    It’s an unfair label that’s followed him since high school but Lamar has proved his doubters wrong at every step. I mean, forever being linked with the GOAT ain’t half bad. But Lamar’s journey to get the proper recognition he deserves hasn’t been easy. He was once a guy overlooked by major college programs, told to switch positions, and someone that critics thought wouldn’t survive in the NFL. Let’s meet these versions of Lamar Jackson in the prism.

    One of the most underrated aspects of lamars story is what was done for him at college. Playing under a coach who was forward looking enough to work with an athletic qb while forcing to play in a pro style passing offense. It's no wonder he was able to translate to the league so well as a passer. Especially considering he was playing under Greg Roman.

      People talk about playoff records as if it’s the only thing and it ain’t! And it’s such a bull***t position to take because the regular season gets a team to the playoffs.
      And more importantly only 1 team is actually happy at the end of the season!
      Furthermore the closer you get to hoisting the Lombardi Trophy the bigger the heartbreak!

    That 2018 draft was wild in terms of quarterbacks. It really feels like a moment in time truly defining before and after. People really were wrong about Josh Allen and #7 felt way too late in hindsight. Lamar Jackson at #32 feels like blasphemy in comparison. But Baltimore really had to adjust to figure out how to get the most out of him. Seeing him brought in for obvious QB keep plays that first year was harsh. Now, it's expected to be able to utilise that kind of player.

    • @tidmarshXC
      @tidmarshXC ปีที่แล้ว +13

      It's odd that that draft was completely flipped from what people were projecting. The consensus at the time was that Darnold and Rosen were the safest picks, Mayfield was a bit riskier, and Allen and Jackson were pure gambles.

    • @mountaineernews2
      @mountaineernews2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@tidmarshXC The main reason why these quarterbacks succeeded while the other two failed is because it depends on how good the team develops them. I do believe that Sam Darnold, and Josh Rosen could’ve succeeded, but they just ended up on really bad teams. I know Bobby catches a lot of crap (as he should), but I gained alot of respect for him as a coach during Lamar’s time there. He legit developed him into a QB instead of just saying “hey you’re athletic af, let’s run it”. You still saw the QB runs, but they meshed it well pro style passing concepts and you saw LJ get consistently better at making plays from the pocket and extending plays. Idk if Lamar would of been a first rounder without going to a place like Louisville.

    As much hell as Bobby Patrino has caught over the years (deserved), this man did his job with Lamar Jackson. He saw the potential he had as a passer, developed his weaknesses, and allowed him to show his natural talent. This is how you develop a player. Coaches at all levels could learn something from that.

    It is weird that despite being unanimous MVP Lamar doesn’t seem to get ranked among the games best QBs by a lot of fans. Like he should absolutely be in the same category as Jalen Hurts, Joe Burrow, and recurrent Jackson foil Josh Allen, but I just as often see him ranked in the Tua Tagovailoa/Dak Prescott/Kirk Cousins tier of QBs which seems pretty unfair

      He's on the same level, but without playoff wins, he hasn't played in a playoff game the last 2 seasons due to circumstances he couldn't control, and has also lacked elite offensive weapons until now. Jackson is the 5th best QB rn (behind Mahomes, Burrow, Allen, and Hurts in that order). Jackson isn't in the top 4 tier yet, but he's close. Currently I'd put Jackson in the 2nd tier with Herbert, and TLaw is getting close to that tier as well imo

    I think that Bill Polian was judging Jackson not by the color of his skin but by the content of his completion percentage. Polian is quoted as saying, "Jackson should switch to wide receiver, because his throwing accuracy isn't there." His assessment here is wrong but it is not unjustified. In his Heisman Trophy winning season, Jackson was 82nd in the nation in completion %. A year later he was 55th.
    Another point that needs clarification is: "there weren't multiple teams that asked Jackson to do receiving drills, apparently, there was only one: The Los Angeles Chargers."
    I would also like to point out that Polian was not wrong to question Lamar Jackson's accuracy. He ranked 9th in the NFL during his MVP winning season but has followed that up the last three years with 27th, 22nd, and 24th place finishes in the category.
