My heart is just into these cars and the Dodge Aspen too. My first new car at 21 years old was a 1979 Dodge Aspen SE coupe. Had the same motor my car had more options. My Brother had an Aspen Super Coupe. It was so freaking weird. My bro was a Mopar guy and was responsible for making me one. 7 years separated us and when I was 12, he gave me the job of maintaining the exterior. Being a stupid kid, I had know Idea what I got myself into for 2.00 a wash. That flat black, matt, paint had to be Armoralled every other week, and the brown paint waxed every month...… I guess that's what kid brother's are for. Anyway, he let me help when he pulled all the pollution crap off, put on headers, large exhaust, cam, intake manifold, and big ass carb...… He made his car freaking scary fast: Mustang slayer and total sleeper for those thinking Chrysler products had lost their edge.

I ended up with my mom's old 79 Dodge Aspen with a Leaning Tower of Power 225 Super Six Two barrel. My youngest son came home when he was born in that car. This car brings back memories. You could sit in the driver's seat, take the fake wood trim off the dash and service the instrument panel without laying on your back! They came out in 76 to replace the Duster, but the Duster was still sold in 76.

That's got a nice #rumble w/that 340 cam and dual exhaust...And he's still got the "Lean Burn" starvation device? Mr. Pfeil must be some kind of engineer to make that work - when I bought my Cordoba, it was disconnected - & I soon discovered why... When I reconnected it, it made the 360 run rich, so I immediately disconnected it again. Really cool car - thanks as usual, Lou!
Hi chemxfan, Happy to read you enjoy the rumble on this car :-) That was a nice surprise. Thank you for sharing your memories on the "Lean Burn" system. You're welcome, Lou
I got a 77 volare roadrunner. It was nice to see the differences that this 79 had. Had it since 96 best car ever. Mines got a 4 barrel though. Its a fairly quick car.
I had a 1976 Volare Road Runner with the Super Pak option (wheel flares/rear spoiler). 318 2bbl/auto. Spitfire Orange. No t-tops, but a looker nontheless. Nice car!! Love the wheels and T-tops!!

Great video and beautiful car. My first car was a 71 Dart with a 318 2 barrel carb as well. Cherry Bomb mufflers. The neighbors hated me in the morning ! 😂
If only the american cars post 1973 had used Honda CVCC type heads, that Honda proved, that worked when retrofitted on a 1973 impala with the 350ci engine, that passed emissions, along with getting better fuel mileage! The CVCC head design eliminated the need of power-sapping emissions equipment such as EGR, an air pump, and a catalytic converter. I saw back in the mid 70's, that the japanese cars were going to make serious inroads on the american car market because of the plethora of "dull and unexciting" american cars. Thanks for posting and preserving the memory of some specialty american cars like this during the "dull and unexciting 70's!"
Back in high school a buddy had a black '79 Aspen coupe he bought from a young lady. Had the rear quarter window louvers like this car, and it might have been an Aspen R/T, but the Dodge was repainted with no decals so no telling for sure. 318 I think. I like the mild mods on this Spitfire Orange 'Runner--340 cam, bigger rear, shift kit in the trans, duals, etc. A 4-barrel would really perk things up nicely; of course I'd store the original 2V away for safe keeping. Thanks Lou!!!
My cousin had two Roadrunners... One was a '70 Superbird and the other was a '71 on the Satellite platform... As a result, I never could get used to accepting these later ones on the old Duster/Volare platform... Last decent Roadrunners to me were the '74s for the final year of the Satellite type... Never liked the redesigned mid 70s ones on the Fury/Charger platform, either!
Now This my friend, Is a TRUE Underrated GEM Disco-Era Cars are my Absolute Favorite, Maybe If I'm ever down there I'll have you Interview my 1979 Pontiac LeMans. (28K) Orig gem.
1979 they had the R/T package for the Doge Aspen and Plymouth had the Road Runner package and the Super Coupe package. My very first car was a 1979 Dodge Aspen it was red and had the same strobe look on the hood and bottom side of the car but mine was a plain jane slant 6 car it did not have the louvers and rear spoiler. I have a 1979 Dodge Aspen R/T not that has the louvers, spoiler, tuff wheel, 4 spped with console and the police 360 in it.

Lou my father came home with a 1967 rambler ambassador DPL, which he paid $7,400 for, that was more than a Cadillac! I remember it very clearly, because my mother had made a platter of cream chip beef, which wound up on the living room floor. LOL
Better car than i remember ! All i remeber is Ted Danson from Cheer's saying "I don't need my Corvette anymore" after buying a Volare and cute women singing 'Volare" ..."Where's my Corvette???". one of those things.
My sister had a 79 volare that was the same color with a 318 2bbl buckets/console, window trim and trunk spoiler but it didn't say Road Runner on it anywhere. Wonder how rare that car was.

Sad really. This car was a perfect example of what the EPA did to the American auto industry. A pimped out Volare with nothing more than a 318 2bbl. Very sad indeed! I commend this man's dutiful preservation of a family treasure, and fond memories of his mom and dad. It's his loyal devotion that makes this unusual feature precious. I'd buy it for his story alone.
@@loucostabile It'll never be like it was, not as long as government regulation controls the creative spigot. The sad truth is, when this car was built the fastest American car was a truck... Dodge's Li'l Red Wagon. So how hard would it be for Plymouth to put that same 360 into this model, seeing the two engines are the same external dimensions? Actually I know the answer. Passenger cars and trucks had different smog requirements. Nevertheless, it's a nice looking car, and it's much sportier than the base Volare. I'd still buy it.
my dad pulled the same stunt and brought home a gold 72 cutlass supreme with white interior and 4 speed which my mom couldnt drive. She wasnt happy. She washed it one day for him and when pulling it back in the garage stalled it and it drifted into the garage door. So dented the car and broke the garage. Dad got rid of it and bought her a olds 98!

I had to add it to my favorites, just one of those cars I remember from when I was a kid. I hope you find a Dodge Aspen R/T , this was the Dodge version of this Road Runner.
Beautiful RR, I was planning to buy a new one when the '80 models came out, either a RR or its Aspen R/T sibling,at the time I had a sweet little '68 Dart GT but still liked the looks of the Aspen/Volare,it didn't happen due to my plant shutting down in the middle of 1980, I did have a couple of '80 Aspens later on though.

@@loucostabile 👋I bought this car. I show your video to folks at car shows when they ask about it. So happy to have the lineage of the previous owners.
I heard that these cars had rust issues and were not as reliable as it's Plymouth Valient predecessor. I've always felt that they were handsome vehicles which Chrysler designed to be more of a direct competitor to the Ford Grenada and Mercury Monarch.
My 1st car was a brown version of that, same wheels, Slant 6 2 barrel(Super 6 my ass), metallic brown with gold trim paint, what a piece of crap, I had no idea was so rare! Born and raised in a dyed in the wool mopar family but other than the 78 lean burn 360 cordoba I owned after it it was the worst mopar I've ever owned and I've owned a lot, some very cool ones. Build quality for a any late 70s US car was just so horrible.🤢 I remember the orange ones when they came out in 76 my cousin had one when I was just a little kid of 6 and I was in love with it, be careful what you wish for.😏

Ohhhhhhh! Nightmares! I had one! Mine was a Dodge Aspen, White on Blue, 6 inline and automatic *#%&/"? I called it the Taxi, since taxis in my area were painted in the exact same combination... Great commuter (for my grandma). The nightmare was that I caused a major accident on a thruway, a real bad one. The car survived with minor repairs (sturdy sons of ***), BUT the issues I had to deal with were terrible. Of course it was my fault, I messed up big time. Hence the nightmare I had to endure. 😠😠😠 Dodge & Chrysler had the Best A/C by far back on those days... that was the positive. davidsclassiccars.com/dodge/157978-1977-dodge-aspen-special-edition.html Sorta like this one...

OK Lou, this is the first car you've featured that I always thought, and still do, is uglier than sin. The Road Runner package gives it some curb appeal, but it's still a Volare. I remember when my GF rented a standard Volare back in the day when her car got wrecked. I had the dubious opportunity to drive her out to dinner in it and the handling and low performance of the car made me ill. And, IMO, the body style was just plain ugly. As I said, this gentleman has a real survivor and at least it's decent to look at due to the Road Runner package. And I must say it's in beautiful condition. But, if only it was a late 60's Road Runner....
@@loucostabile Yeah, I've seen many of your videos and liked every single car you featured except this one. Actually, it's not so bad since it had that Road Runner package, which makes it quite unique. But I never did like the Volare's in general.

Hi Starc Traxler, Happy to read you enjoy this car :-) Lou
Hi Shawn Terry, Happy to read this car looks like your car :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
I had a 1976 Volare Road Runner with the Super Pak option (wheel flares/rear spoiler). 318 2bbl/auto. Spitfire Orange. No t-tops, but a looker nontheless. Nice car!! Love the wheels and T-tops!!

This Road Runner reminds me of another rare late 70's car; the Plymouth Fire Arrow.
Thank you for sharing what this car reminds you of.

Hi Gary Desbois, Happy to read you enjoy this "time capsule" :-) I'm having FUN for sure, and I do have people assist me at the shows. Also looking for someone to handle the "Sponsor" piece. You're welcome, Lou
Great video and beautiful car. My first car was a 71 Dart with a 318 2 barrel carb as well. Cherry Bomb mufflers. The neighbors hated me in the morning ! 😂
Hi D R, Thank you for the kind words on this video :-) Happy to read you had a fun 1st car and thank you for sharing, Lou
Hi Carlos Carpinteyro, Happy to read your comment and thank you for sharing. Regarding the post, it's my pleasure and you're welcome, Lou
HI AMCmachine, Glad to read this one brings back memories of the 79 Aspen :-) Thank you for viewing, sharing, and you're welcome, Lou
Awesome Lou《☆》The 1/8th mile track champion in sportsman streetlegal 3 years consecutively was a 76 Aspen R/T 360. Consistent 9 second car🤓☻🤠
Hi BDOG JR, Happy to read this one brings back memories of the Track Champion :-) Lou

My pleasure :-)
My cousin had two Roadrunners... One was a '70 Superbird and the other was a '71 on the Satellite platform... As a result, I never could get used to accepting these later ones on the old Duster/Volare platform... Last decent Roadrunners to me were the '74s for the final year of the Satellite type... Never liked the redesigned mid 70s ones on the Fury/Charger platform, either!

Hi Kyle H, Happy to read you appreciate this "GEM" :-) Sounds like you have a great car too. Lou
Hi 79tazman, 360 in your car sounds fun :-) Lou

Lou my father came home with a 1967 rambler ambassador DPL, which he paid $7,400 for, that was more than a Cadillac! I remember it very clearly, because my mother had made a platter of cream chip beef, which wound up on the living room floor. LOL
Hi UnZippity Doodads, Thank for sharing a fun memory :-) Lou
Have a feeling I may have seen this one at Hemmings MusclePalooza in Lebanon Valley, NY.

Sounds like a fun car and hope you're behind the wheel of one soon :-)
Better car than i remember ! All i remeber is Ted Danson from Cheer's saying "I don't need my Corvette anymore" after buying a Volare and cute women singing 'Volare" ..."Where's my Corvette???". one of those things.
Hi g mat, Happy to read this one is better than you remember :-) Lou

Hi Evil AngryRobotman, Thank you for the encouragement :-) Have a great day, Lou
They make a mild cam and fuel injection for that engine now. Check out some of Doug Collins videos.

Hi 20aplhabet, It's ok, we came back and created some high HP cars again. It's about learning and improving, Lou
@@loucostabile
It'll never be like it was, not as long as government regulation controls the creative spigot.

I heard that these cars had rust issues and were not as reliable as it's Plymouth Valient predecessor. I've always felt that they were handsome vehicles which Chrysler designed to be more of a direct competitor to the Ford Grenada and Mercury Monarch.
Hi Larry Hawkins, not sure about the rust issue, however happy to read you this car is 'handsome" :-) Lou
MEEP! MEEP!
:-)

Great looking car but they were very slow
Looks :-) Speed :-(
What is weird is there is no cartoon Roadrunner on the 79-80 cars.Maybe Plymouth lost its rights with Warner Bros. to use the cartoon on the car.I know Dodge and Plymouth were going through some big financial problems in these years.

Ohhhhhhh! Nightmares!
Dodge & Chrysler had the Best A/C by far back on those days... that was the positive.

HI Chuck Ster, Clearly this one is not for you :-( Stay tuned, you'll see some more you'll enjoy :-) Lou

Yeah, I've seen many of your videos and liked every single car you featured except this one. Actually, it's not so bad since it had that Road Runner package, which makes it quite unique. But I never did like the Volare's in general.
