- A look at the brand new QLine System in Downtown Detroit Michigan. This system runs up and down Woodward Avenue in the heart of the Motor City. We watched some of the train sets as well as took a ride to the end of the line during the opening weekend.

Trust me, we good homie...I live in Detroit and it blew *my* fucking mind how quickly we are recovering. After the bankruptcy, I predicted 20 years recovery...but having been there myself, 5 years -- easily. Truth is, we already "came back", it's just a matter of us keeping up with the demand of foreigners emigrating to our city from other cities such as New York, Chicago, even down South for some reason, but they're here, and we welcome them!
It can be bitter cold during the winter, but the seasons keep things intereting. Christmas looks like christmas b/c of snow, fall looks like fall because of the change in leaves and colors, spring looks like spring because of the blooming of flowers and summer is just as hot as anywhere else. You should come visit us sometime. Stay for a few days and see for yourself. You'll love it here and you may want to stick around longer.

That's a load of crap. Detroit real estate is worth less now than 2010 at the height of the recession. Most of the "growth" is concentrated in the small downtown area.
Mr. White The downtown area experiencing growth is still a positive. We just gotta hope it continues to spread out from there. It's hard to make blighted neighborhoods appealing for families to live there, when they can't afford to maintain schools and other services on their own! Detroit is a very complicated place with complex issues. It will take time for the cities wounds to heal, but they are healing.

There are two issues I see with the QLine as built. First, the stations are limited in allowing for two cars to be linked as demand grows. Second, farther out on Woodward Avenue, not running the line in the center of the street and placing stations there mean each "stop" side isn't as cohesive.
But, since Detroit is starting to become renewed, this will help foster continued growth. It's a good first step. If the city and the state of Michigan could add a People Mover station fully connected to the QLine, that would increase the success of both.
Fa' sho. Considering we just came out of bankruptcy, the fact we even had a qline approved is astonishing. It's more like a blueprint to see how people take to a different form of public transportation. Personally, I think we're overdue for an underground or serious overground station and will be pioneers in that area like we were with the automobile, but for now...we're happy with our Qline. It really does serve it's purpose inspite of it's flaws. :)

The city is getting it together, building affordable homes as well high prices living in Midtown. Det has 24 gr bus service. New jobs. Penske an other partners fixed up the river walk bought Q line enhanced downtown. Replaced everything Kilwaume messed up!! Police Chief Craig isn't playing around either. Detroit is on the come back Baby!!!!!!
I was in Downtown Detroit 20 years ago on a Saturday morning and the city was miserable looking and dead. This video is suprising the city actually looks beautiful here and a new streetcar line adds to it. Maybe I will go back there one day.

Not to sound like a dick, most of this is filmed in Downtown Detroit. Once you leave the Downtown area, you better know where you are and where you're going. You don't want to get lost in this city. I've been going to Motown since I was 5,believe me. This city is no joke.

Detroit is Roaring back to life !! ya should've purchased a wrecked house or some vacant lots when the gettin was good , it's running out fast now. and I see for sale signs on empty lots now from Coldwell banker and others and brick going up on old buildings instead of being hauled away. Ford Motor Company has dumped over half a billion to rebuild the Detroit Transit Building it will be the new high tech center for Ford transforming Detroit from "Motor City" to "Silicon City" the lawn is mowed and Old Glory flies again in front again. and then 40 million by another person for new skills center. and when was the last time you heard construction companies Advertising for journeyman ,,,on the radio! We are looking for skilled people to rebuild Detroit. Motown Records museum has purchased all the property around the original houses and is expanding and making interactive displays, while preserving the old recording studios.

4 years ago Woodward Avenue in downtown Detroit was deserted on a stinging cold Saturday morning in April. That was certainly not the case in 2017 when the new QLine streetcar made its initial run in the Motor City bustling with people and commerce like in the good old days of my youth.

You're comparing such a BEAUTIFUL city like Toronto to Detroit? Are you on drugs or suffering from alcoholic pickled brain disease? If you think Detroit is better than Toronto, why don't you move to Detroit and find out why Detroit has been a shit toilet city since the summer of 1967. Oh, and bring a couple of hand guns with 45 ammo clips for personal protection. People in Detroit, or people just driving through Detroit are being shot and killed. A young 5 year old child that was riding in the back of his parent's vehicle in a car seat, got shot in the head and died. Just a few days ago, a police car with 2 Detroit Police officer's in it, was shot at 8 time's by a car driving past them just cruising through a west side neighborhood. When you got the balls to come to Detroit, make sure you have your life insurance policy paid up, your funeral arrangements are complete, and that you're living trust is in proper up to date order. Up until now, I thought that Canadiens were very intelligent people.

@Eric W hey Eric every city in America has shitty,Dangerous places L.A,Miami,Atlanta,New Orleans Houston Chicago etc so why is it only Detroit gets treated like shit while all these cities I've mentioned don't? Downtown Detroit in the Summer time is 1 of the greatest cities in America. In the past 5-8 years the city looks like a different city and all Detroiters should thank Dan Gilbert and other citizens for believing in Detroit!

@@Lukie2131 That is the same all over the World! I live in the UK and have travelled widely in the USA as well as elsewhere and by and large found the USA both courteous and polite. There are plenty of places in London that leave a great deal to be desired. Even my home city Brighton has some very dubious areas.
As a tramway /streetcar enthusiast this is amazing! It makes me want to visit Detroit as soon as possible.
Fun Transport Fact Detroit Salt Mine had the deepest underground electric trolley trucks (basically freight trolleybuses!) In the World hauling salt.
Forget Detroit it's about time other cities in Michigan got some attention for a change like my city that's in Michigan called Flint.

That stretch of Detroit looks really nice, how's the city doing overall?
The downtown area looks exactly like what you see here--all brand spanking new businesses and everything. The thing is, a lot of neighborhoods, which have been hard hit by both foreclosures and blight and crime and lack of decent city services, still need help---there are plans for those taking place,and the city is dealing with those issues---but the thing is, longtime Detroiters, who held the city down while everyone else was leaving, are the ones getting gentrified out of it, to some extent, which is unfair. There has to be a way the city can be improved without pushing out low-income folks just so people with money can come in. That's what I don't like to see happen. There are still a lot of problems in the city---longtime systemic ones dating back to the riots and before---but at least people are dealing with it this time. There's also a lot of regular everyday working folks who are community activists who get out there, protest, attend city council meetings, and fight the good fight to make sure that Detroiters don't lose out in this new comeback for the city, and to deal with those problems we still have to deal with---problems left over from the emergency manager, water shut-offs, people losing their homes to tax foreclosures because Detroit homeowners are paying way more property taxes on their homes because they haven't been reasessed---meaning they're paying far more taxes on their homes than the homes are actually worth. That being said, you should check out this book called how To Live In Detroit Without Being a Jackass---it actually breaks down the daily harsh realities of living in the city and gives some good tips on how to adjust to them, plus it's even more of a hilarious book if you're a Detroiter.
Kirk Wood Gentrification is happening everywhere the economical casualties are always low income citizens. Detroit has been on my list of cities to visit I'm glad the city is making a comeback. I appreciate your reply it was very informative, and thanks for the book recommendation I'll definitely check it out.

Our light rail systems in the Twin Cities have those fake bells, but they are not quite as sick sounding as Detroit's.

That looks nice. It's good to see some positive economic improvements in Detroit. I don't live there, but have relatives there. I didn't watch the video all the way thru, but since it's no longer free 2 ride, how much does it cost to ride it? (just curious)

Ok, I appreciate you telling me. I certainly wouldn't mind riding that if I ever return to Detroit. I haven't been there since the year 2000 even though I only live a 4 hours drive away. (Chicago suburbs) I also would like 2 explore the Renaissance Center too, if I go back there, but other than that I don't know what else I'd do in downtown Detroit.

Thank you for sharing this great video which shows how my favorite deserted urban ghost town has resurrected from the ashes. Detroit still has a long way to go and will probably never recapture the magic I experienced as a youth while living in the "Promised Land" during the 50's when pre-Motown was the industrial capital of the world.
This and Little Caesars Arena definitely make me want to visit one day.

I can't believe it doesn't have fare integration with the rest of the municipal transit system. It's like it's only there to make the white area more attractive, instead of serving the whole city by allowing people to transfer for free from intersecting bus routes. People Mover fare integration would also be logical. It's all about appearances. Detroit has a long way to go before it becomes a city that works for all of its residents.
It does look like a bus on wheels. Reminds me of the #6 Wilshire bus in Los Angeles.The #6 bus can turn-it has two sections.The Q Line has 3 cars.Would have made more sense to buy a couple of those buses.A train has a lot of cars; more than 3.Have rode the train in Los Angeles and they have a fence or barrier running parallel to the train for safety.They need to put train service where People Mover ends.I grew up in Michigan but have family who work for Los Angeles county, so I know how things should be.Could use improvements.

Hey, Nice vid ! Such amazing Architecture downtown . Hope Tech can bring it back to the busy life it once knew. The new trains look amazing, Kind of reminds me of the ttc, and it runs nice which is more than i can say about the ottawa new trains right now. Will have to take the tunnel bus over this summer and ride one of these in person. Can you transfer from the tunnel bus to the Q-line? Does it have a stop at Rosa Parks station? Again , nice work

It's faster walking down Woodward, than it is to take this BS streetcar. I know, I've done it many times. The reason the fare is free, because nobody in their right mind would pay a penny to ride this trash can on rails. This is a real waste of public and private money.

I designed a city that has everything subway, skytrain, light rail you name it its got it!
just short of 3 whole miles and only cost nearly 300 million bucks wow how can anyone ever top that.. we could have bought a fleet of hundreds of limos and just shofer driven people all over for less money and time..

Try laying tracks in NOCs and see how fast your little toy train is destroyed. My city built Light Rail system and was forced to discontinue the line that went thru a NOC lest the entire $3 billion system be taken out. The two remaining lines service white neighborhoods.

Privately funded dude. Any expansion further towards the Fairgrounds - as proposed - would then be city & state funded. Sending it to 8 Mile Road and Fairgrounds would be a nice economic boost.

Tensor Tab the Q line is a privately funded transit system. It is sponsored by Quicken Loans which is where it gets the “Q” from.

it seems this type of vehicle has so many names, streetcar,tram,light rail,trolley,and ones that ride above are called monorails or people movers. then you got the single ones that go up mountains on cables,called airel trams,rope ways,cable cars,or gondolas. then you got the ones the climb up mountains or inclines called funiculars. then you got the old school street trolleys powered by a cable cable cars as well...then you got the trackless trams like you see at zoos and such....the most basic name all these are called i notice is trams....trams like actual trains sure come in verity thats for sure. from mountain gondolas,to the little red cable cars of San Fran to the little trackless people mover being pulled by a converted van to the mini street trains like this they are all called trams! tat is a big verity!

This is great! But, they need to electrify ALL routes because it looks like some run on diesel. Also, they need to start coupling the trolleys together, or running them a couple minutes apart. Otherwise, it looks great!
Emperor Palpatine it is actually battery powered for more than 50% of the line. There are overhead lines on portions, but most of the time these cars run on their charge. When in service they run 10-15 mins apart in theory, however service has been suspended since the pandemic.

keep the street cars. detroit needs a subway - an underground system where you can get out of the cold & rain while you wait a half hour for the next train.

Pumpkin can be good with this Q Line battery electric. But what if the battery runs low between two tram stops? Then the passengers push home the Q Line?

If it did go to the ghetto, they would completely destroy it. Best to keep it on Woodward and expand it to at least 8 mile. I doubt that will even happen though.
would be super happy to see this running from 12mile road. maybe from 12oaks mall till Telegraph road. with so many office parks in this area, it will take the load off 12mile!

Now I noticed that Detroit still looks pretty empty. They need to attract major employers and soon or they might as well kiss their tram "goodbye" because once the "newness" wears off, no-one will ride it.
Problem is not lack of employers. Downtown office occupancy is 95%+. Three new office towers are being built and six existing towers are being renovated. Ally Bank, Chemical Bank, Quicken Loans, Aliant, Microsoft, Google, Amazon, Bosch, Lear Seating and numerous smaller companies have moved downtown. The problems is a lack of mass retail but that is an issue everywhere. Over 26000 new jobs have been created in the city core since 2008.
