She is. It's still wrong tho. She may have that personality type that just can't be bothered with her hair. We all know the type people who just don't have the interest and their interest simply lie elsewhere. There are women who refuse to shave and some women who just tie their hair up in a ponytail forever lol. This is what it could look like for a black woman who may not take interest in hairstyling. Truth is hair isn't that huge of a deal. People hate to see curly hair in this way. uneven and free forming tight coils for some reason just drives people crazy. it shouldn't. also i hope my tone was more agreeing with you because i'm in no way combating what you said. I just read and decided to rant and add more lmao☺. cheers God bless

Idk “styling” is subjective. Many non blacks go for the “tousled” look or a “messy” bun all tolerable and acceptable styles except for black type 4 hair. People should say her isn’t in preferred socially acceptable style

    • @joelledavis4547
      @joelledavis4547 หลายเดือนก่อน +26

Exactly. We have to have standards when it comes to 4c natural hair and this is anything but, especially on a wedding day. I don't care what race you are, this picture makes you want to to ask her to blink twice if she needs help, because absolutely no woman would think it's okay to look like this on a wedding day.

No, let’s be honest. It’s not about her being natural. I’ve been natural for almost 20 years now. It’s about her looking like she took off her bonnet, got dressed and went to her wedding. It’s unkempt. It looks dry and uneven. Natural doesn’t mean that you don’t care for your hair. You can’t compare the bride to Simone because Simone actually styles her hair for the games. This young lady didn’t even use her hands to fluff her hair out evenly. Everyone doesn’t have to have laid edges (because I definitely don’t do all that) or wearing wigs, weaves, etc., for your hair to be groomed. This is simply about the lack of grooming in my opinion. You don’t have to wear an elaborate style for your hair to be groomed. There’s nothing wrong with being a lazy natural. I’m one myself. But I do still moisturize and style my hair to keep it healthy. It looks like it’s broken off badly in certain areas from lack of caring for it. You can’t tell me that this is groomed! Don’t piss on me and tell me it’s raining! Wear your natural hair. But care for it too! It’s not hard when it’s short to keep it clean, moisturized and tidy.

@@ennvee1989 exactly! I miss embarrassment and shame lol. When I was younger, you kept your business to yourself because you didn’t want to be embarrassed or feel ashamed by your actions or lack thereof. Now? You’re supposed to just support everyone in their 🐂💩and it’s ok! No!!! We should maintain some level of respect for ourselves by keeping ourselves up for ourselves as well as not wanting to be embarrassed by coming out of the house looking just any kind of way. Respectably politics aren’t all bad! There’s nothing wrong with saying that pajamas and bonnets belong in your house and not the store. There’s nothing wrong with being covered appropriately when you’re pregnant instead of just wearing your regular clothes unbuttoned and so tight that everyone sees it if you have a mole on your stomach! And there’s nothing wrong with saying that you should care for your hair, and actually do it nicely for special occasions. Sorry for the rant. But it’s so tiring to just see the world going to 💩 around you, yet you’re wrong for pointing it out and saying we need to do better.

This was deep she basically said yes unambiguous black features we wake up flawless on our best day( which some may argue is supposed to be our wedding day) And to choose a look similar to how she could look if she just woke up was POWERFUL imo. Yea her man and her are riding off into the sunset because she is the best choice. Her and her hair. Deciding not to comb should not be cause for people to degrade her appearance. There is nothing bad about this form of us. It can not be your preference but it's not bad. We also we also have a right to call out those who choose to present natural hair at its worst in public. I can't tell her what to do, but I can voice my disapproval. As a natural BW, I've taken on the duty to present natural hair *at its best* . I want to inspire others to consider wearing natural hair. That's *my* choice. We have a cultural tradition of "doing" our natural hair. Hair like hers is seen as a call for help, an indicator that something may be wrong. *Especially* at an important social event!!! Images like this are used by haters to put down natural hair. Our hair IS "easy" and "carefree" but we do not have "messy bun" hair. Our "messy" hair is different and should be treated accordingly.

Always a joy to see you've uploaded another think piece. For this video in particular we'll have to agree to disagree. I agree people need to uplift natural looks we do like in the media, but its very clear her hair is unkempt. Her hair is completely matted in the back which is not even healthy for 4c hair. Also that fade she has is very overgrown, which is okay but its not a sign she did anything recently to her hair. Braids, sleek baby edges and wigs are not even needed for her hair to look put together. Just spray some water add $2 blue magic and fluff it out
As much as I'd like to disregard this look its hard because it makes 4c girls look bad. As a people i feel we all have to collectively work together to make our natural hair look managed. The same way we address smelling funky when we wake up from our slumber is the same way we address our hair getting matted hair.
I feel bad for her in the sense she obviously doesn't have black friends that embrace their natural hair. Also that she likely grew up getting her hair relaxed and missed out on early hair care education. The older you get the less time you have to build these skills. This look could've been fixed in less than 10 mins if she had support.

Now my honest initial reaction was maybe she was just trying on dresses and her hair got messed up. But if that's not the case and that's just how she styled her hair. Then that's just how she styled her hair. People have different styles that others may like or not like.
Then the way society directly/or indirectly look down upon females who don't wear makeup is crazy. Certain careers/jobs you are seen as professional by wearing makeup🤨
When blk women put bonnets on because their hair looks like hers underneath/or whatever it looks like they get talked about. If they have an afro that isn't curly/or big enough they get talked about. The obsession with making their afro curly with braid outs, creams, gels, rods and etc. is crazy. Many say they're "natural" but go through hoops to "define" their curl pattern. Many don't want the Florida Evans afro.
If they get weaves, braids w/o weave, wigs, relaxers, perms, put color in their people talk about them. Many straighten their hair because they fear they won't get the job/promotion because an Afro will seem too blk. Like if they wear afros they're part of the Black Panthers/NAACP and will report all the racism at the job.
But I love when blk women love whatever way they want to wear their hair. Not worried about what others see you as is a freeing feeling.

It's disappointing to me that we can see people doing brilliant things in their lives and their careers, and the first thing we do as humans is question their appearance.

I agree. Her hair may look inappropriate for a wedding, but it's her wedding. Look at how the public treated Simone Biles due to her wedding pictures. Even after she won numerous gold medals, women still found a need to criticize her hair. What's the rationale behind that?

Appearance matters in the world whether we want it to or not and it does say something about you sometimes depending on the person and the individual. And I don't think this is a racial issue or black people tearing down natural hair, as many have said her hair looks uncombed/unstyles and such. She didn't have to have laid-edges or anything but just looks like no effort to people. That said, that's how freedom is people can carry themselves however they want and people are free to question it. Such is life. It's be she and her husband though and no one else.

@@beautybonvoyage8624 When appearance matters more than the value or happiness of a person then we've entered into a superficial society. ESPECIALLY when their appearance does not concern you or meet your approval. REMEMBER, just because society does it, doesn't make it right. Celebrities are now upset because some people are using social media to call their babies "ugly". Where does it stop?

Appearance unfortunately does matter, however, when the critique of somebody's appearance is used to undermine not only their achievements, but to make negative assumptions and connotations about them because of it, that's where I draw the line. I have seen people in this comment section call this lady mentally unwell, slow, and comparing her to a man due to her appearance. None of that is kind or fair, or has even been confirmed if it just so happens to be the case, and yet we want people to refrain from saying those same statements about us.
If anyone understands the importance of appearance, it would be me, but I can also give grace and compassion where it is due. We can so easily create unwanted insecurities while trying to protect an image. We have so many hidden and underlying issues with beauty, appearance and respectability politics as it is, I don't want to feed the monster we've created any further.

Her appearance is making me question if she even washed her behind that day. Did she brush her teeth? Wash the crust out her eye that morning? It just looks like she neglects her hair and probably herself. This is not the way of our ancestors lol

But it’s not styled or groomed at all. Yes she has the choice, but if she post on social media, know that people have the choice to speak freely about what you KNOW they’re going to call you on. And stop saying it’s about her
natural hair. It’s about that she just flat out did not comb it that morning.

People have to keep in mind...Every black woman is not obsessed about her hair. And to be perfectly honest, Based on her choice of husband (based on looks) They actually look like a good match to me. And I bet they're both smart and educated as hell😂

I thought it was weird people dogging on her they say they want natural but really don’t want it…because there is truly no wrong or right way to be natural if that is the case free form locs are just matted and knotted unkempt hair but yet this is all result of the “euro centric” mindset being too deep rooted but I don’t think anyone is really ready for that a discussion maybe in a different time shift 😅

You sound slow, I’ve worn my hair naturally for over a decade and I would never walk around with lint balls and knots in my hair. Y’all are being disrespectful acting like natural hair equals unkept and dirty. Afro picks exist. Shea butter exists. Black women have styled their natural hair beautifully for centuries. Stop with the stupidity 💀

Ah aht. Gurl bye. Even in Africa they ain't walking around looking like this. They'd rock a bald head before stepping out looking like they ain't bathed in a week. Every race uses some type of comb or brush. We not bout to sit here and claim being unkempt is going against eurocentric beauty standards when homegirl couldn't even be bothered to grab an afro pick

This is why I believe, black women get criticised, because of the unkempt natural hair look that seems to be very trendy in the natural hair community....but not with me 🤢
