As Thai, this is the easily way that I made somtum at home. If you can’t find a papaya, you can use a cucumber or sweet corn instead. It’s really good in hot summer.
As a Thai you made it perfectly, you can also use the white part of a watermelon in the summertime, that was my favorite. But papaya salad is my favorite thing my mom makes, that’s the one thing I asked for everytime I can home for R&R from the Army or now when I come home after traveling from work 😂 with some Larb
Yes, LAOS has a lot of this dish salad... Here to name a few.. Green beans, carrots, mango, Cucumber, Rice noodles included instant noodles, Pho noodles, And Vermicelli noodles..
New Earthen vessel needs to be soaked in water for two days. Forget not ot chnage water every day and only after this we can use the thing. Hope so you have done this.
Add prawns raw or cooked. Crispy pork bits, next level…. I made this religiously after a trip to Thailand many years ago, glass noodles, vermicelli. Your only limited by your imagination, green mangoes is yummy. I use cabbage when papaya not in season,,,it’s ok.
@@CandyPeauvale-xd8hjcabbage is the perfect choice as it's very nutritious. You can also add cabbage to the papaya if you have both. Use the cabbage as a wrap for the papaya.
Wow...Its been a long time since I make myself a somtum. I used to make it everytime my family have an open house.❤❤❤. Its the best! You need to add garlic, lots of lime water, thai palm sugar, small dried shrimp, fish sauce, fresh thai chillies and lots of cooked crushed peanuts. I still remember. Some of us even add in cooked salted fish too(too smelly for me though).. I loved using any veggy alone or by combining them based on what I can find right away, like papaya/raw green mango/carrots/radish/tomatoes/green cucumber/ the rind of the watermelon/ water guard/boiled green beans...basically anthing that can be shredded and taste fresh!!!
Try adding shrimp paste and tamarind paste and some peanuts. Blue crab can be hard to come by but honestly my favorite way to have it if u can find a way to get some
@@HungryEmpire it’s a simple recipe, grate raw papaya and then add a tempering of mustard seeds, hing, turmeric and juliennes of green chilies. add salt and sugar for taste and let it sit for a while it’s 🤤 delicious

Is there a substitute for fish sauce?
@@potionofocean5472because most people like it better when it’s been refrigerated. But room temp or chilled both taste good

Had this as a kid in Thailand and never looked back. 10 out of 10.
Note: watch out for the added crab in shell.
@@BeNiceToday2 You don't really ever see that version outside of Thailand. It's also EXTREMELY high in salt so wouldn't suggest it
The thai green mango sa my favorite. Papaya is also good.

Fish sauce or soy sauce but fish sauce is better, my opinion.
Somtam is equal to Bambam(Got7)❤❤

I buy from a Chinese supermarket. I live in London though

If I use a mix of tamarind and soy sauce to substitute for fish sauce, will it work?
