    Away rotations require huge amount of money. Travel, place to stay, transposition, food etc… it’s a lot.
    I did an away in the same big city I did med school at. The away med school didn’t provide parking or a discounted monthly parking plan…had to pay like $40 per day for the entire month. Showed up everyday except one day off. Had to show up at 430 am and left at 8pm. No post call days. At the end of the rotation senior resident told me he already put in a good word to the attending I was working with saying that I had already agreed to help him (was not discussed previously) with a research project which required a huge amount of time consuming, menial data mining & entry (essentially wanting me to do the scut work on the project).
    Felt like I was totally being taken advantage of. I told him no thanks with the understanding that by saying no I would never match there and had wasted all my time and effort.

    I wish there was some data on student household income and how it correlates with specialty. It seems that students with high income parents have greater opportunities to shine as an applicant (including doing aways- i had several friends with parents that funded their aways). Those friends all matched to very competitive specialities. Meanwhile I'm going to be a FM doc (which I'm very excited about), and there's absolutely no way i would've been able to do several aways required by some specialties. My parents are poor and theres no way they could've helped me. Also, alot of classmates talk about FM not making enough money and while i agree FM deserves more, 250k is alot to me considering my parents have never cracked 6 figures their entire lives. This whole system is a completely different experience based on your background i guess is my point. 🤷

    You absolutely have to do away rotations for EM. How tf are you suppose to get 2 SLOE’s?

    • @RAPGAMETAYLORSWIFT
      @RAPGAMETAYLORSWIFT 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah it's changed from 2 aways to 1 since COVID but 1 is almost always required for any reputable program.

    • @sheriffofsodium
      @sheriffofsodium  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I get your point… but I’m still gonna push back, for the reasons I stated in the video.
      If you go to a school without an EM residency program, then sure - you HAVE to do an away rotation. But if you have a residency program at your institution, you get your eSLOE there.
      Are there programs that require (or at least announce that they prefer to receive) more than one SLOE? Sure. But a lukewarm or negative SLOE isn’t gonna help your chances of getting in there… and may well harm your chances of getting into a program that didn’t require an extra SLOE. Unfortunately, the applicant won’t know that their SLOE is negatively perceived until their application is submitted and interview offers fail to roll in.
      My biggest point in the video is deciding whether to do an away rotation or not is a strategic decision - and requires considering both the benefit and the risks. I agree, most applicants in most specialties will benefit from doing away rotations. But not all.

      Thanks for the kind words. 9/10 commentors throw shade on the intro music. I know it’s not everyone’s style… but there’s gotta be something to let you know that you’ve arrived at this channel!

      I’m a current medical student (DO) entering OMS-1 and honestly your work in this channel is impeccable. Not only the data is well presented but also your multi-faceted analysis completely change my outlook on our medical education and the MD/DO debates. Well done, Dr. Carmody… I mean THE SHERIFF OF SODIUM!

      @@Joongsu Thank you for watching. Honestly, it’s people like you who I consider to be in my ‘target demographic’ - younger physicians and trainees who are curious and intelligent and want to think about systems a little bit more deeply… and who will go on to be future leaders and opinion leaders who will be in a position to change minds and policies.

    What are your thoughts and understanding of the diagnostic radiology match data for aways? Would you also consider it a middle tier competitive specialty. I’m a rising third year OMS3 and I’m trying to get a lay of the land to match diagnostic rads. Thank you so much for your content.

    I notice you don't have any Shorts on your channel. Idk if you give a hoot ahout how many subscribers your channel has, but if you want to boost your subs you should cut little quick-hit TH-cam Shorts from these videos. They get boosted by the algorithm way more and are the best way to expand your audience. Just FYI!

    • @sheriffofsodium
      @sheriffofsodium  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you for what, I’m sure, is good advice! Are there particular things in my wheelhouse that you think would be good for Shorts? I feel like my natural style is a little long-winded - it takes me a while to build up to my point. So I’m not quite sure what kinds of things would work in this format - but I’d be grateful for any suggestions!

    Perhaps ones 3rd-year evaluations should be considered when deciding whether audition rotations is the right choice? I'm torn over this topic, my one audition rotation cost ~$1,500 for my airBnB, however was helpful because I knew exactly what I was getting into and that it was a wonderful program with a wonderful PD, however when ranking, I felt I was blindly ranking the order of the programs I didn't audition, although from 2nd hand knowledge knew the program I matched with (I ranked #2) was also an amazing program. Also during rank month, I was discouraged feeling even if I did well in an interview, I would never be ranked above a student who did well on an audition, I felt I had a qualitative disadvantage compared to students who auditioned at the program who would always be ranked in their top-tier. but I think you had terrific advice in regards of the self-reflection factors to consider whether a student should consider doing auditions

    • @sheriffofsodium
      @sheriffofsodium  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Agreed - I meant to specifically say that your third year clerkships should be your guide but got distracted!
      You’re also right about the value of away rotations for evaluating the program. Like I said, that’s reason enough to do them.

    • @sheriffofsodium
      @sheriffofsodium  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Good question. I think most of the Med School 101 advice still translates. But I’ll be honest- I don’t know how a medical student can be most useful to a radiologist or pathologist (other than by not tripling their work like the BMS students in HoG). But maybe someone else will chime in with better advice…

      For rads a way to stay engaged is to proofread the resident/attending reports while they’re dictating and correct grammatical errors you may see. I did this as a student and residents loved me for it and I wish the students that rotate with us were as proactive with that
