    I matched more than a decade ago (whoa!) but the way I ultimately selected between my top two programs was putting both names in a hat, drawing one, and then paying really close attention to how I felt "matching" at that place. I matched at my #1, wonderfully supportive program, still close with all my co-residents and my PD years later. One of my now-colleagues matched the same year at the place that I listed #2, and from his off-hand comments I realize I would have been pretty miserable there. So there's a testimonial for gut instinct!

    Do you have any recommendations on how to phrase questions about level of autonomy? What are key factors/ indicators in a residency that can tell me the level of autonomy I'll have?
