Neil Peart's timeless lyrics in this song are still so relevant today. "Quick to judge/Quick to anger/Slow to understand/Ignorance, and prejudice, and fear walk hand-in-hand." Never more true. Rush created intelligent music and intelligent lyrics for intelligent people; it's the thinking person's rock, and I am impressed with your take on it.
My man.. YES! always think analogy, hyperbole with Rush. Also listen for analogies in the stories in lyrics especially in the older songs. Amazing how apropos lyrics from many years ago are today, especially today. Much love man, White Boy From L.A.
The Fear series is excellent. This one is about how our fear of the unknown, our ignorance, drive certain mob mentalities - quick judgement and hatred of anything alien or different. The Weapon is about how our fears can be used against by corrupt politicians or religious leaders, etc. The Enemy Within is about how our own fear, often irrational, can make us our own worst enemy. And Freeze is about how we can sometimes be immortalized by fear, unable to reason. All in all a very cool study of different aspects of human fears. Cheers!
It's such a great song. Timeless lyrics. One constant in life is human behavior, and Neil captured it perfectly here. Try Headlong Flight from the Clockwork Angels tour next!
_"the righteous rise with burning eyes of hatred and ill will, madmen fed on fear and lies, to beat and burn and kill.."_ I was watching scenes from Charlottesville 2017 and couldn't help thinking of this song.
So from what Geddy says, if you listen to the "angry mob" you can hear Neil shouting "it's not a F*cking football!" - an inside joke from their volleyball games they had during the breaks from recording...
The whole Fear series is excellent. This song is so cinematic! As for documentaries. Beyond the Lighted Stage is an excellent documentary about their lives. Also, The Boys in Brazil which documents their tour through it. There is also Dinner with Rush where the guys have a "business meeting" where the jokes and the wine are flowing.
For another performance with deep lyrics, I'd like to recommend Ghost Rider from their show in Rio; it was based on what happened when Neil's wife and daughter died tragically within 10 months of each other, and he took a break from the band and rode his motorcycle all across North America as he worked to process his grief. Rest in peace Professor. 🥁 🥁 🐐 🐐
Rush "The Garden"/ W lyrics. One of my many, many favorite songs from Rush. Middletown Dreams Marathon Are a couple great tunes off of Power Windows...
I seen the Rush tour it was the 30th anniversary of this album and they played it in its entirety and I was third row center man that was a good time😎😎
I'll state it though maybe someone already has?.... Look at the album cover,...men moving pictures, people weeping being moved by the art, and on the back a film crew making a moving picture film. From west coast Canada 🇨🇦, peace.
Sir, Rush has a few great Doc's you can check out. "Beyound the lighted stage" is one the one for their trip to South America is awesome too "Live in Rio" , serious fan base !!!
AHHhhhhh... "Witch Hunt" by RUSH... Things that make you go... HMMmmmm, huh??? Firstly, THANK YOU FOR DOIN' THIS PARTICULAR TRACK!!!! Not too many people listen to RUSH, much less "Moving Pictures" Album B-Side (the A-Side of THIS Album is considered, among music critics, as the PINNACLE of RUSH's "soundscape" & their inherent value in music industry... OH BOY... weren't THEY DEAD WRONG with THAT analysis)!!!! I, personally, like the B-Side WAY BETTER then the A-Side!!!!! Chuck FULL of double meanings, OUTSTANDING LYRICISM, WONDEROUS MUSICIANSHIP in the INSTRUMENTATION, & MOST OF ALL... THE MESSAGES that the songs were ABOUT.... TRULY LEGENDARY!!!!! True, most people are oblivious to the BIG picture this song's lyricism tried to convey, but, the message is quite clear... hidden from view in the lyricism... it's about HUMANITY jumping to conclusions, based solely upon identity politics & bigotry. I say again, "Things that make you go... HMMmmmm, huh???" Sounds like TODAY'S WORLD ORDER... So sad, but SOOOO TRUE. Peace, Love, & Liberty. MIC DROP 🎤.
FTW, during your Rush journey, you have to make sure you listen twice at least. The lyrics tell stories in every song. Btw, would definitely be interested in a Rush documentary. You got a lot of work ahead of you my friend. GOD BLESS YOU AND yours omnibus Easter wknd. ✌
Great reaction! Neil really had his fingers on the pulse of human nature...sad that this songs rings as poignant and true now as it did in 1981! The parallels of 'mob justice' between the Salem witch trials, WWII Nazism, to McCarthyism...to any time a demographic is singled out as 'dangerous' - it just takes enough people screaming about it, others to listen, and then collectively to act on it - whether justified or not. Amazing track! As is the entire Fear Series. Cheers.
Replace the lyrics "they say" with "maguh says" and it all makes sense. They say there are strangers who threaten us Our immigrants and infidels They say there is strangeness too dangerous In our theaters and bookstore shelves Those who know what's best for us Must rise and save us from ourselves

I couldn't find a live version of it. I find with Rush their live versions are always better than the studio versions.
The complexity of this song, the theme, the "atmosphere" they created, the unique style...unparalleled. And the lyrics? Neil was a profound writer, obviously, a visionary, and always on point with a nod to egalitarianism, justice and equality. The 3 guys were/are...just so impressive in all aspects of their talent, work and personal lives. And the warning of this song is relevant right now...Trump, Putin, Christian Nationalism, Bigotry, Fundamentalism, Authoritarianism, Oligarchs, Greed, Apathy, the GOP, the same evil mentality that existed during the Dark Ages and beyond, back for another "effort".
@@thatsnice99 oh, I don't know...the guitar riff, synth lines, drum lines & entire melody...if you can't hear it, then you're deaf or REALLY not listening. As a musician, this song intrigued me plenty on first listen because it was not their usual type of tune - but plenty there to dive into - I felt the vibe and rhythm instantly.

Among my favourite lyrics of all time.
Omg, was just about to comment the same thing!!!
In my top five lyrics in all of music.
“Madmen fed on fear and lies, to beat and burn and kill“

Such a great band & song! So relevant today! Vote for our freedom ❤
Neil's most powerful statement against bigotry.
Not to mention the similarities to the attacks against Trump! Some people would have no problem at all with lynching him!
I see it as one of *many* unheeded warnings Neil tried to bring to all our attentions...
Rush... The thinking man's band
Nailed that hammer on the head, Ben
Been enjoying your Rush reactions.... Prayers up Brother ❤️🙏
These lyrics almost mean more today than anytime in our history….
100%!!!!
A very sad truth...
One of the BEST 80's Rush tunes for sure!
I've seen people weep at their shows.....( in person) I've seen them , within the first five rows probably at least four times
Great reactions! Welcome to the Rush family!
Your analysis is spot on, Fabian.
This was the only song Neil Peart ever overdubbed an extra drum track on.
This is one of my favorite RUSH songs. A commentary on the worst characteristics of human society!
Love your RUSH breakdowns! You get it!

I love The Weapon. Wore the cassette out going through tough times in the 80s.
The fact that their music went over most people's heads early in their career shows how far ahead of the time they really were.
It's such a great song. Timeless lyrics. One constant in life is human behavior, and Neil captured it perfectly here.

The pass is also an incredibly deep song that you truly need to listen to.
Deep. I also thought they were gonna go with witch related lyrics but wow 👌🏼
I seen the Rush tour it was the 30th anniversary of this album and they played it in its entirety and I was third row center man that was a good time😎😎
Check out Rush 2112 album. These guys are poets. Neil is the mind behind the lyrics.
The Salem witch trials, Joan of Arc, Hitler, KKK, immigrants and the fear of the unknown....it's all there...
Yes a lot of people don't get Rush musically and lyrically no band is better
I'll state it though maybe someone already has?....

This completely
Mirrors what is
Happening with
Society right now…
It’s so sad to see,
Because we’re all
Better than this.
Peart is visionary…

Would love to see your reaction to the other 2 songs in the Fear Series.

@@EchoesDaBear feel free to point out where in the song the musicality exists.
You can’t.
