Another super spicy Vampire that would fit perfectly into the Grief+reanimate package would be Olivia, Crimson Bride. She's a 4BR flying haste 3/4 that gets to reanimate a creature from your graveyard on attack. The creature is tapped and attacking, but has the downside of you have to exile it if you ever stop controlling a legendary vampire. This leads to a 6 card happy Christmas land of: Grief + pitch + swamp + Dark rit + Sorin + Olivia = turn one grief 2x and attack for 6
I honestly want to see a Mardu version of this deck, basically Red Guy Ale that cheats in Vein Ripper and Blood Baron of Vizkopa that can be copied by a flipped Fable if need be.
Love seeing this list pop up. Coincidentally I have a similar plan with my mono black deck in Timeless, but I also play a fun-of one-of Lord Xander to dump into play off of Sorin.
A question: At 22:49 you Grief and see 4 Blue cards, knowing that you wanna resolve either of 2 Reanimates. Ponder/Daze/Fon/FoW. You take FoW to deny their ability to double counter, but I wonder if taking Ponder there wasn't better to both deny the same double counter ability but also the cantrip that could dig them out of a resolved Reanimate?
I've been playing Scampires in legacy for a few months now, Patron of the vein is a great vampire, I have also found Pretcher to be a very strong card in legacy. As much as I want to play ripper and have a couple of copy's myself not sure if it's that good.
Love the content Phill, it's been getting me through a lot over the last couple years. Just wanted to say that it looks like you've built a functional deck that works well. Have you considered adding Master of Dark Rites so you can pitch cast a grief and use it as dark ritual to fuel your vampires so the deck is funnier and worse instead?
Olivia Crimson Bride seems potentially interesting as another thing to potentially cheat out with Sorin? Being able to Evoke a Grief or Troll Cycle, dump out Olivia, swing with Haste and bring it back already attacking seems pretty gross
Really nice how many times you could just hard cast vein ripper. Also that trade on murktide for a 4 point drain was nice. Also, sorin into vein ripper is 19 damage by turn 3. Swing for 7, swing for 7, sac itself to sorin and drain 5.
If you're actually playing vampires.dek, sure? But you shouldn't actually do that. Not to mention any kind of black tempo deck is built on the back of sol lands, and BBB for a kicked gatekeeper is REALLY rough when many of your lands make 2 instead of B.
I completely understand mulliganing to powerful hands, but if you draw a hand with mana to cast both bowmasters and grief, both 4 ofs, then ship it then maybe they aren't worth being 4 ofs
@@fartface8918its more that it kinda negates the downside, rather than js an upside. Being stuck with it in your hand after effect is annoying, so the ability to both pitch it, and chrome mox it, helps negate the penalties for running it.
@@jaredschroeder7555 gotta agree with fartface here, you're never considering running another vampire in this deck to synergize with sorin that isn't already a black card in this mono black deck, so saying you can pitch it to grief/tuck it under mox is really just saying nothing at all. good cards are good and bad cards are bad. pitching a good card isn't bad because at least you had the good card to begin with
@@rgyerr3501 agreed. I'm actually a tad excited to see more, because it seems like the kinda "cute" card, that also has some legs to stand on in teir 2 or 3 decks, kinda like exanguinater calvary. If a few more of those types of cards come out we might even see a vampires deck rise to semi playability like elves and humans had, as well as goblins oc
8:51 Opponent must be scared and confused here, two cards in a row you have to read is never something you want to see in legacy. EDIT: dang, that game was quick. Veins Ripped, let's go!
@highfivefromryan it does, thats for sure, but it also feels just kinda lame. Like, with ither colors it feels like there is some degree of variety in their wincons, but with black every deck has this win con and sometimes another. It just homogenizes black decks, even when they try something spicy like this.
@@jaredschroeder7555 just like every Show and Tell deck has Atraxa and Emrakul? Like every red stompy or goblin deck has Broadside Bombardiers? Like how every green midrange deck has Up the Beanstalk? How literally 40% of the format itself has Orcish Bowmasters? But no, essentially thoughtsiezing your opponent twice on turn 1 is “boring”. Okay.
I know this is "old man yells at clouds" and I know you addressed it in the video, but I dislike the cards they make these days that don't look anything like magic cards and are so hard to read at a glance. I also know I'm yelling into the void and nobody cares.
Chrome mox has no business being in any mono black deck w dark ritual. Its just not logical to try to have that many cards in your opening hand meant to get you to 3 mana on turn 1. Most the success from this idea will come from control plus value. The value is not just a turn 1 vein ripper but can easily be a turn 3 vein ripper after thoughtseize into removal into sorin. Id say grief is really good with this idea too. Love this idea and might be the 1st person to build this properly on moxfield, maybe.
I agree. I even think people overvalue the utility of having one-shot mana acceleration in non-combo decks in general -- not saying they should never be played, just that they're overvalued. I remember a while back Thraben played a deck that had no one-shot mana acceleration and just an abnormally large amount of threats. And Thraben did extraordinarily well with it (4-1 or 5-0 or so), because the enemy would Force one thing and Swords two things and just die to the fourth threat. And Thraben said that he didn't think the deck was actually good despite the record. Well, the deck did have a huge threat density, and that's pretty valuable.
Phil. I have to ask, because I see the same thing when Kalikaiz does meta analysis videos in Chrome. Why don't you have an ad blocker? Your Moxfield sponsor plugs have banner ads and it's so gross lol. Thank you for coming to my Ted talk.
I'm not Phil (obviously), but when it comes to recording ads for a website, I feel like they may not want Phil to 'promote' or otherwise legitimize using an adblocker? Considering ads is their revenue model and all.
Chancellor of the dross is a vampire that both:
Goes under chrome mox without any sadness and
Is a 6/6 flying lifelink to use with sorin.
I was just coming here to say that. And it also has the turn 0 drain potential.
Damn that's hot

Haven’t watched yet, but solitude is such a perfect answer to Vein Ripper.
I am so mad I didn't think of this
It is but grief is a thing
that final game in round 4 was so tense! a topdeck war with both players at 3 life is crazy
I honestly want to see a Mardu version of this deck, basically Red Guy Ale that cheats in Vein Ripper and Blood Baron of Vizkopa that can be copied by a flipped Fable if need be.
This is the strategy used in Timeless as well (only we also have necropotence available as well for the turn 1 Dark Ritual play)
commenting for this deck to make a return after polishing, Super fun deck to watch Vein Ripper is sweet!

The end of round 4 had me so tense, incredible magic this league!
this was so freaking cool +1 on another go around!
i wonder if putting in 1 surveil land to fetch off troll with reanimate packages would be a cheeky bit of spice to help get a creature in the yard
The surveil lands are doing that quite nicely as of late. Legacy Reanimator definitely needed more consistency lol
This is so crazy..it might just work ! EDIT : actually kind of impressed how well it went 😮

Black Market Connections might be better than Preacher. It creates Vampires for Sorin so that can negate the life loss and fixes your mana.
oh hell yeah, never would have thought of that
That match 4 tho. Scary but satisfying.
I've never been quicker on a Phil video...
I don’t play a lot of legacy but curious why leyline wouldn’t come in against reanimator. Counter magic ?
Was really hoping for the solitude after the swords to plowshares comment, I'll have to see if it happens later though lol

Did anyone else catch that Phil called the ProTour a side event?! 9:19
Vein Ripper? In this economy?😮
$20 to $25 is nothing for a legacy player. As someone who tried to put together a deck on the low end of the budget it really can be crazy.
@2007Shockwave yeah, the Chrome Mox playset is so much worse.
Is gatekicker of malakir not playable in a vampire themed decklist ?
This Legacy, not 2010 standard

Questionable edit at 19:00?
Suddenly Chrome Mox was just in the graveyard.
I think it would have been nice to see the Abrupt Decay hit the stack.
How do beans player always get 3 of them almost every game I see
i feel chancellor of the dross would be a banger to put into play with sorin and can be safely pitched to grief
every hand with more then 1 card has a worst card thats safe to pitch, being the most pitch able card isnt really an upside

"That side event" xD
i think grief+reanimate is good and vein ripper seems pretty good against rescaminator
Also vein ripper seems sweet tbh. Im a fan. When did it come out?
In the most recent Standard set, Murders at Karlov Manor.
Yo that was a great run for a standard card lol very impressed that it wasn't just always the pitch to grief or mox

Hi Phil 👋How can we help?
Chancellor of Dross for go brrrrrrrr.
Needs more Veil of Summer.
I am really off grief troll reanimate, the gameplay loop is repetitive and not interesting
Okay, but it’s effective and wins games?
Yes it’s quite boring :(

Eh, people have been complaining about this since the masterpieces, I don’t think it’s that much of a problem, especially on mtgo
