Wow guys, lovely transformation. It’s amazing what a good scrubbing and a bit of paint can do. I remember momma taking a “quality” pan off the top of the neighbors trash can. I was embarrassed… but learned a valuable lesson. Momma was on a $16 a week grocery budget raising a family of five. The neighbor bought the best of the best and tossed it in the trash because she was too lazy to scrub it. Momma took the pot in a scrubbed it up, I think she still uses today at the age of 83, it has served her well for close to 50 years… and still looks new.

I had a neighbor who shopped at the Limited and was my size. She didn’t donate her gently worn clothes, she tossed them in the garbage. Limited makes nice work clothes. I always got compliments on my wardrobe that was 80% dumpster finds.

8:13 Mom always said white walls are for people scared to make a decision. If she wanted light walls she'd choose the palest color on the color chip strip. Thank you for not using gray. There's a millionaire ex-couple on HGTV that does mostly everything in gray and I think their projects look like the poster child for depression, the mental illness, not the era.

You have to keep in mind that flippers are not designing houses for someone specific or for magazine beauty. It's proven that white and gray sell houses because anyone walking in the door can imagine putting their stamp on the blank slate. And if you watch multiple flipping shows on HGTV, you'll see how each show tweaks the "blank slate" to the buyers in that region. What sells like hotcakes in Southern CA might not move the same in Houston or Atlanta or Chicago, etc.

I happen to like that warmer gray color on my walls. I warm it up in Winter with poppy red and orange accessories, and when I'm ready for a Spring refresh, replace the red/orange palette with crisp white and yellow. For the Summer, this year I added royal blue, and in the fall, I am doing some turquoise, I think. I like variety, so the warmer neutral shade is great for me. Just saying that there are lots of different opinions, and I wouldn't push my choices on anyone.

What I LOVE is that you avoid gray paint at all costs and don’t blow out walls for “open concept. I find those two things predictable, unimaginative, and evidence of an inability to think for oneself. The above will be next decade’s redos for sure. Love how everything you do is so unique and timeless…you two have true talent.

I cannot stand it when people do the open concept in a historic house. It looks too much like a glorified double wide trailer.

The house is now a home, and not a furniture store display. It looks incredibly comfy, and I could easily live there. Re the living room couch, if the staining cannot be removed, you can always put a colorful "throw" over it.

I'm one of the heathens that actually doesn't mind gray - but I like it more as an accent/trim color to complement tones (pure hues with gray mixed in to give it a lighter, softer, more springlike feel) or in place of a cream (like off-white gray instead of off-white cream, still very very light and bright). Too much gray is definitely a no-go

I love your channel! I grew up in (and still live in) a city with lots of historic houses (mostly 1700's-early 1900's), many of which are well preserved and loved. I recently bought my first home, a 1930's colonial. It's so true that you have to look past the dated decor and dirt. A cheery paint job works wonders, and thrifted art and furniture brings so much character to a room. I think we've only bought 3 items new - everything else was free or thrifted.

It was cluttered and smelled like dog/cat pee, had green fixtures, dark painted ceilings and heavy drapes covering all the windows so it had no light. We pulled back the curtains and imagined ripping up the dark stained shag carpet and fell in love. I really hope that no one else can see past it.

In December 2020 I bought a house from 1954. It was occupied at the time but dingy to say the least. I'm still moving in after 7 months but just adding peices that I have or found makes it feel more like me. Love watching y'all!!

What a transformation! LOVE IT. The platform rocker is a true find. My mom's platform rocker I made into a "covered wagon" with the aid of a mop and broom and a sheet. I even tried a nail bucket underneath. Now I have the rocker.
The fox and all the art work are the mood setters for me. They add interest and draw you into the composition. This makes the space infinite and only your imagination determines the journey.
I could look at decorating magazines all day but your vlog ACTUALLY GETS ME OFF MY BUTT to shop the contents of my house. Huzzah.

Ya’ll are such an inspiration! My husband and I just bought a 1892 Victorian and it’s somewhere in between having to stand in the floor fixing joists and needing a massive scrubbing. Once we dig in this week we will know more. Watching your videos I know we can do it! Thanks for sharing your beautiful restorations! P.S I can’t stand the grey trend either!

Because of my always looking for ideas of how to tackle projects in a 125yo+ home, your YT channel popped up. I did a little catching up on some of your past videos, including "Louise's" story as I am familiar with Louisville, GA. The risk of living in a "tinder box" of wonderfully sturdy heart pine is always there, but worth it. You have handled so much with dignity and respect for the original builders and owners, and there is just nothing like the character, beauty and craftsmanship in an older home. That said, I saw in one episode where you were using heat to removing paint from a newel post and balusters. I have been researching the use of the newer 'paste' called "Peel Away" by Dumond (sp?). You paint it on in a thick layer, then cover it to cure, then it peels off multiple layers of paint attached to the cover paper. Our staircase definitely has lead paint within the many layers which are so thick in some places that you can barely see the design carved in the wood. So, I have been toying with trying the Peel Away in one location first. Would love to see more homeowner videos or examples of use as I make my decision. Sorry so long-winded!

The infra-red gun is not a “heat” gun in the traditional sense and does not vaporize the lead creating harmful fumes. It is a safe and fast way to remove paint.
We have used peel away- it does work, but it is very messy and extremely expensive if used properly. I’ve never had it “work as advertised”, meaning it takes all the layers off at once and takes them off with the paper. To get the best effect from it you have to use a layer about 1/8 inch thick, and so your $60 bucket is good for about one side of one door. It’s very very messy.
The infra-red remover is expansive but it’s a one time investment that saves money in the long run. That’s why you’ll see if using it rather than chemical strippers now

Hi, I just want to say that you have a new fan. I just found you last week and I have 'binging" with your videos. I even put TH-cam on my TV so I could see it better and easier. You are an adorable couple and so knowledgeable, not to mention darn good workers. I started watching out of order unfortunately and I just saw your home that burned. What a tragedy but thank God you were not there. And you have such a good attitude about it, you grieved but came up swinging. Good for you. Best Wishes in all your endeavors, I am thoroughly enjoying you and your work. I've been in love with these old houses forever. Thank you. Terra

Love you guys! Always look forward to your videos and posts. Learn something every time and best of all, your positivity and joy! Much needed in our world today. Nok Out is another great product that actually works to eliminate and disinfect any gross odor/surface you can imagine. It's non-toxic and can literally be sprayed on an animal or person if needed. Comes in handy if you have a run in with a skunk!

I LOVE that you took those chairs to the car wash. My family fostered cast growing up so I KNOW how bad cat pee can be. But you just have to know how to deal with it! So many people are so disgusted by the smell that they can’t bear to be around it for more than 10 minutes and they end up throwing away hundreds of dollars of furniture, clothing, and bedding. I’ve found that enzymatic cleaners like fizzion do the best job at cutting the smell.

People grew tired of beige. Grey was the new beige, but, yeah, a much lighter grey would've even been better! Some people choose grey as a neutral to add a pop of color w/their furniture to balance it out.

I don't want anything grey in my house. As I live on the southern oregon coast and we have enough grey days. Fog fog fog. Don't understand when I see people paint their houses grey. Really. Just look outside on foggy days. There, grey!

@@loritanner4478 I see your point about foggy days! 😉 Must be the opposite contrast here in Tucson, AZ, the sunniest city in the nation - grey (light greys) are still in-style here!

Yes! Definitely have to look beyond the filth. We had to look past a lot of filth and some really bad DIY projects and horrible paint when we bought our "Grand Dame".
My decorating doesn't look half as good as what you accomplished in just 24 hours! You have the touch!
