1 Cow Dairy Farm - Milking a Cow for Your Small-Scale Homestead

  • Want to produce your own milk at home? We show you how you can have a one cow dairy farm on your homestead and milk it once per week to have milk for your personal consumption. This method is more natural and humane because the dairy calf stays with its mother and is only separated from the milking cow for a few hours before the occasional milking. We'll also show you the basic milking and milk processing equipment you will want to have to make for an easier, cleaner job, even on a small scale.
    Nice small milking machine:

    What type of milking machine is this? I understand that the pump is just a small vacuum pump, but wondered the brand of all the other equipment. Thanks!

      Very interesting, but why do you hang a bell around he cows neck I would think that poor cow would find it very annoying having to hear that constantly?

    So many negative/mean comments! Give the man a break people! I appreciate the video. This way works! Everyone has to do what works for them, what they think is best, and what they like. You have a beautiful place and I respect all the time and work you put into your farm to provide for you family and animals. Keep up the good work, and ignore all the negative people.

    As a dairy farm owner, when I hear milking once a week it gave me a funny feeling.

      He turns the calf loose with the mother after milking, I have practiced this many times and it does work well.

    I like this way of milking, it's a nicer way then how big company milk farmers do it.

    It's a 2 cow dairy! Well, maybe that Jersey is dry on that visit. Thanks for making this. I'm thinking of milking 2 to 3 cows, sharing milk with calves, and selling some milk/cheese. I work with a guy that has 2 jerseys and he sells some excellent Mexican style cheese.

    For 1 cow and once a week, milking by hand is a better option i believe. Being less sanitary is open to discussion depending on how you are doing it.

      Some people are obsessed with getting rid of germs! But I think it’s way too much work for pasteurized milk you can just buy at the store! I don’t see a point in raising dairy cows unless you’re into raw milk and raw milk butter and cheese.

      Yeah, hand milking is the way to go. A lot of contamination is caused by poorly cleaned/maintained equipment. I can hand milk about 4 cows an hour. Get a bucket, grab a stool and go for it. I am milking 30 cows at the moment but I would love to go back to hand milking.

    that is far to much of washing hoses can nipple cup and et up for one cow, I can milk my 2 cows out by hand in 20 min each and I'm done, to have to wash all them parts every time is far to much of a pain, never mind for once a week

    David (and family) thanks for the Video. I'm researching getting a milk cow at our next location we will move to.
    I was thinking the excess milk would go to the hogs and cheese.
    But for just drinking it sure seems like a lot of work.
    Beautiful animals you have.

    • @DavidinFrance
      @DavidinFrance  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the comment Fred. It depends on how much milk you need for sure. But you can also make quite a bit of stuff with milk too. Cheese is pretty hard to make, but yogurt and butter are really easy. Also, we always have at least one calf nursing on the cow so that she gets "milked" every day. Good luck!

  • @simplelivinghighthinking7007

    I don't necessarily agree that the milking machine is more sanitary. There are probably types of bacteria that grow in the crevices of the milking equipment that could be as bad or worse than the bacteria from the air or from what falls into the open bucket. Also the noise makes it not as peaceful an experience as milking by hand. Just one person's opinion...

    I agree with Ms. LeBlanc... all of that sanitizing and sterilization, then you milked her in a dirty stall? Plus, i noticed that you didn't so much as say Good Morning to your cow.. just haltered, tied her and hooked up your machine... no pats, no kind words...most people who have a family cow are attached to them and treat them as important members of the homestead

      David in France we are getting cattle on our farm in the spring and have been debating if we would have a dairy cow in the herd. This is a good view on how it could work for us

    • @DavidinFrance
      @DavidinFrance  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's definitely doable. One of the benefits is that a dairy cow produces so much milk, you can buy a couple beef calves and they can nurse on her and you will still have enough for your consumption plus her calf.

  • @JS-xs5hq
    @JS-xs5hq 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    There is an old saying amongst the old farmers: Show me a farmer who hangs a bell on his cow and I'll show you a lazy man. How would you like that bell clanging in your ears?. Do you have such vast acreage that you can't find a couple of cows? Seriously? Your video was passed around and you gave us dairyman a good laugh.

    strange in that you went to the trouble of sanitizing the cow and pasteurizing your milk; yet, the area you are working in to pasteurize, including laying the lid down on what looks like a very unsanitary surface, becomes a moot point?

    • @TheKristenGibson
      @TheKristenGibson 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Gail Leblanc I'm confused myself. Maybe they just like the cow, and it's not Sally even about the milk? They had milk products in their fridge the purchased, they only milk once a week, and they pasteurize. Everybody I know that has a family milk cow doesn't do any of those things.

    • @sheilamclaughlin963
      @sheilamclaughlin963 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is a waste time video of all the things not to do. U don’t milk where u keep the cow all night and since we had clean milking barn I could clean and milk by hand in 5-6 min per cow, we milked 3-4 cows twice a day yraround. We also sold cream and milk in the area and to a rural creamery of which very few are left.

  • @weegie2818

  • @TheKristenGibson

      @bradsimpson8724 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheKristenGibson Milking once a day still leaves a whole other milking for the calf, a perfectly common practice for all but the most newborns. And he mentioned that he's only milking once a week; there's plenty left for the calf.

    Hello David. Thanks for sharing. one question, how does the cow conceive .... naturally or artificially?

    • @ftgallup7918
      @ftgallup7918 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Either artificial insemination or use a bull. I opt for A.I. for safety.

    • @viperflyer

      I would let nature take its course unless its for medical reason. Not sure how much we, humans know when a female animal is ready and how it feels about it.

      Rude. And unrealistic of you. The system from teat to can was enclosed, and I've never seen a pristine milking parlor anyway, the only time the milk was exposed to anything even in the air was from bucket thru filter into jar, and I promise you, the filter catches what little there is, just as the vid shows. People used to have dirt floors and didn't die. City peeps smh.
