now that I think about it, magnetic weapons serves me the longest in xcom 2, since usually by the time the game gets serious, I'd have moved past conventional weapons and by the time I got to plasma weaponry, I'm already rolling around with chosen weapons and maybe one shadow chamber research away from the last mission, not to mention that advent (not aliens, just advent) uses magnetic weapons too
Honestly conventional weapons on xcom 2 is just *peak* resistances, nothing will ever stop me from hating on gauss or laser but it just hits different absolutely decking a muton with a magnum.
I love the “Lv2” magnetic guns the most the visual & sound is so cool

my personal favourites are the tier 0 guns of the SPARKs, the ones you get from the moment you build one
