i agree , lo-fi is like a window. it creates this separation between whatever you're going through at the moment. on the other side of the window is the world, in constant flux in sometimes in our lives we get cought by that current and its feels almost impossible to get out of stress, change or monotony of it all but then , on your side you can step back free your mind and just watch the world and take a moment to breathe. it gives the same feeling as the famous "earthrise" photo in my opinion.

I like lo-fi videos because of the comments. Some people there are just stress, overwhelmed by something or down right depressed and they really don't want to share their story and feeling to people even close one but they do open in the comments section in lo-fi videos. And usually the result is that they received a tons of love from other people and telling them that they also have experienced the same things and that it will be alright in the end. It basically kinda like a free therapy section. You tell them your story, they listen and give advices and try to relate to that person as much as possible.

It's the new easy listening. A mix of longing, nostalgia, solitary retreat, and a bittersweet aftertaste. Lo-fi makes anything sound like history in a way that at times sounds uplifting, but also introspective and cathartic. Before I even hopped on the bandwagon myself, I would simply refer to it as trip-hop since it's what I had been exposed ever since I was a kid. I always liked the raw, damaged, grainy kind of texture coming from lo-fi compositions.

I hate how the lofi community is just filled with depression now, can’t we take it back to when it was to chill and vibe when jamming with a few friends? I get this music helps a lot of people but the comment sections of lofi songs just kind of make it too much in my opinion, guess I just miss some of the old days :>

I turned to lo-fi hip-hop music because I had enough of the decreasing quality of pop music. Contemporary modern pop is all about love, mainstream hi-fi hip-hop is all about being a gangster and I hate the reggaeton Daddy Yankee is trying to shove down my throat. This is why I started looking for alternative music genres.
My big introduction to alternative music (mainly the genres of new wave) were meme clips and edits of vaporwave music. This was at around 2016, when I still thought as an idiotic teenager that dupstep is alternative music because it sounds different compared to mainstream pop and hip-hop music. The song that always got referenced was Lisa Frank 420/Modern Computing by the talented vaporwave musician MACINTOSH PLUS. Her music got me hooked into meme music culture, but I only started listening to vaporwave in a more serious manner at around late 2018, when I saw Vinesauce Joel's livestream about a fanmade sequel of the obscure PS1 runner game 'Pepsi-Man', called 'Pepsi-Man: The Forbidden Drink'. It was a fun game and it used vaporwave edits of popular '80s and '90s pop songs (you know, songs from the time pop music was still good), but one specific song really got me hooked into vaporwave; it was a vaporwave edit of the song Music in the Night, the original song originating from the band Solid Strangers. This vaporwave edit extraordinarily sounded good and I just wanted more out of this style. I searched for more vaporwave music on TH-cam, then one day, TH-cam autoplayed a song from the future funk and lo-fi hip-hop music label Artzie Music called So 1989 by Yuni Wa. It was future funk music, a more upbeat and catchy subgenre of vaporwave, trying to capture the essence of '70s and '80s disco music and french house while mixing it up with '80s Japanese city pop samples and anime GIFs. Basically the sound of modern pop music that has never come into fruition, or modern pop music from a different, better timeline. Then the magical moment came and I started listening to one of my first lo-fi hip-hop experiences ever, Summer from the lo-fi hip-hop musician Vanilla. It also got me hooked and I was craving for more, so I created a playlist called "The dankest dankwave EVER", featuring future funk and lo-fi hip-hop songs. Yes, I referred to both future funk and lo-fi hip-hop as vaporwave music, specifically meme vaporwave (aka. dankwave or vapormeme) used in music-based memes and Leafy-styled commentary videos, even though it's technically not correct in regards to lo-fi hip-hop. Then I discovered that these types of music have their own genre names so I started referring to them with their correct names (you know, future funk and lo-fi hip-hop). I then discovered synthwave, the music genre that gradually evolved from synthpop into its own, self-contained piece of art about cramming the premise of the 1980s action movie vision of the far future into musical chords. Then I discovered the parent genre of both of them, chillwave. Then after watching a lot of LGR videos and some gritty stuff from PHub, I finally fell in love with smooth jazz.
Lo-fi hip-hop gives me the chills...
I mean, synthwave, vaporwave, their parent genre, chillwave (also referred to as hypnogogic pop) and smooth jazz also gives me the chills, but all of these genres take a different approach of how they achieve calming atmosphere. Synthwave gives us the optimistic hope of a technologically advanced cyberpunk utopia, thus making us feel relieved and calm. Vaporwave, on the other hand, gives us the illusion of a successful capitalistic present filled with interesting technology around us. A present that never happened and it never will, from the perspective of the future. A technologically more advanced version of the '80s and '90s, a simpler present where technology and humans are in harmony with each other. Chillwave also tries to convey us into the illusion of a better present, combined with the elements of outrun/synthwave. Lo-fi hip-hop tries to chill you out by giving you the smallest pieces of joy in life and making you calm. Smooth jazz focuses on social life, hanging out with friends in fancy restaurants, enjoying the music that they play there and tickles your romantic feelings about the opposite gender. This joyful and romantic approach then leaves you with tranquility, peace and if you have a crush on someone, you then would probably like to talk to him/her.
And this is the present. I only listen to four new wave/alternative music genres and to a calm serious music genre (smooth jazz) nowadays. I don't need mainstream music anymore because I heard better. I don't need a random set of notes arranged into a song that tells nothing because I heard music that evokes feelings and it's food for your thoughts. When I only knew about mainstream music, I hated listening to music, but now, I love the genres I'm listening to.
Lo-fi hip-hop, vaporwave, synthwave, chillwave and smooth jazz has strongly connected me to music, and I'll never forget it.
Lo-fi hip-hop, vaporwave, synthwave, chillwave and smooth jazz gives me the chills.

To anyone who comes across this, in the sea of comments, I would like to share what I use lofi for.
When I listen to that track, it gives me one memory that has yet to come (has someone had said in the comments.) I see myself, in either a cool, cloudy light drizzle or a sunset, on an apartment building overlooking a small city. I have a girlfriend/wife or just S.O, (for a non gender conforming person) with me, sipping a hot drink. We have a cat/kitten somewhere in the picture, either laying on the porch or on their lap. Lofi plays in the background. This feels like home, and peace. Its something that I can go to in places of depression, loneliness, or when I have nothing to keep me going. I feel like this could happen one day for me, and when something like it does, I'll find a lofi station, and reflect, I have freedom, love, and tranquility, all there on that porch. I do feel like that day will come, no clue when, but I just hope it comes. When it does, i'll update this comment if I can. To show that I made it, to anyone who wants to know. Thank you for reading

It's the kind of music you play in the background on a warm summers night, as you chill on your balcony and hear cars go by, taking long drags from your cigarette and thinking about what your purpose is in life. It's the kind of music you hear when you imagine sitting in your apartment looking out over a blade-runner type city. It's the perfect background music for the modern age is what lofi hip-hop is to me.
