    You can slide the pallet forks under the logs and hold them waist high to cut them, it saves your back! I use them instead of a grapple. Just don’t ever raise a log higher than the front of your tractor. It could roll off and crush you when you’re sitting in the tractor’s seat. I make pallet totes too. They are super handy. I just drop them off beside my outside furnace and load the furnace right out of the pallet tote. They are nice for loading up with limb wood and also the goofy ends that you can’t rack up.

    Nice idea with the wire , I didn’t take off the boards on the pallet , I put one pallet on the floor & pallet on the left & right and attached them with an angle 2x4.
    The only thing I should have done was put a wire screen on the back side to stop the wood falling out ,when transporting.

    • @Back40Firewood
      @Back40Firewood  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks....yeah the forks are proving to be useful for sure. Using pallets did add weight over the IBC frame but I'm not gonna stack the wood inside, just leave it loose so still should be able to pick it up with the Kioti. Getting the pallets is the big X factor so you're set! lol 😀👍🍻

    Your money and time the wood totes you built look great, the forks are my favorite choice around my farm, the grapple is good for in the field with trees scoups up the smaller stuff to a fire.

  • @bwillan
    @bwillan 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Will the FEL on your tractor be able to handle the weight of a fully loaded pallet bin? For $35 per IBC tote and cage made of metal, seems like a great deal when you factor in your time and other materials. Now that you've harvested 3 pallets to make 1 pallet tote, you have 2 less pallets to use for other things on your property. Mike at the Outdoors with the Morgans channel, uses IBC totes for selling fire wood. He cuts away part of the cage on 1 side for an access door, to make it easier to neatly stack wood in there and gets 1/3rd of a full cord of firewood in there. I suspect you could sell your firewood that way locally in those cages and make it easy handling on yourself, your clients. Just be sure to charge a deposit for the return of the IBC cage to cover replacement cost.

  • @brianrizzi6321
    @brianrizzi6321 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Hooray! I’ve been rooting for this piece of equipment. If you get good with the forks they are arguably better than the grapple. Next you need a conveyor to offload your wood into your totes or ibc totes. That’s what I do :). I also use a tractor mounted hydraulic unicorn splitter to bust up my mega rounds before I bring them to the splitter so they are more manageable

    Great idea!! I took some pallets last season and made a woodshed out of them. It's a great way to get wood off the ground, keep it covered and the NW wind blows right through it.

    Good idea , would be nice if you could stack them too. My problem is getting same size pallets. I made some with a A- frame for face cords which allows me to sell half and quarter fcs off the same rack at my driveway stand.

  • @truthhurts8551
    @truthhurts8551 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Time will tell. Fill one full of wood and try to move it around. A load of green splits weighs way more than is obvious. My worry is that your sides will rack and twist. I also think you will find getting your forks in the narrow side slots is a pain in the pa-toot. As an added hazard,if you engage the pallet from the notched side, there is nothing to keep it from going over if the pallet tips . We were required to only lift from the ends in the warehouse I worked in years ago. I predict you will eventually buy the totes. I'm rootin' for you none the less. Good luck.

    That's how I stack and move all my fire wood.
    Pallets are free and if they rot.. just burn the old one and get a new free one. Hahaha
    IBC totes are a bit to heavy for either one of my Tractors so pallets are a tool..
    I palletized everything.
    Forks are great.
    Stay safe and always be kind.
    Go 603

  • @Thehobbytrucker
    @Thehobbytrucker 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Honestly the only advantage I see to the IBC tote is you can stack them, which you may be able to do with those, but you also need to stack the wood in it to get a 1/3 of a cord. I have a CK2610 ( I think that’s what yours is?) and I’ve stacked green maple, beech, and black birch on a pallet and 1/3 cord is all it wants to wrestle. I’m thinking you could a 1/3 cord in that pallet tote just blowing it in off the splitter, no stacking. If you could figure a way to stack one on top of the other, that would quite a time saver in the wood yard. Cool idea too.

    It's always nice to reuse things. I will say the IBC totes are nice and light and easy to move around. Around here they're $50-$80. I looked for a few weeks and found 10 for $200. There not perfect but for firewood they're great.
    I will say the added weight of the skids, your tractor might be able to lift a full skid, it will be interesting to see in a future video.

    I like your attitude of using what you have and repurposing it. I try to do that often as well.
    That said, I did purchase 6 IBC totes. 2 came without the plastic liner. $25 each and I could only transport 2 of them at a time. The first time I even rented a HD truck because I didn't own my Tacoma yet.
    The totes with the plastic liner (4) I use to store kindling. I drilled holes everywhere to provide airflow except for the top which I cut off. I put the top on when it rains but even if I don't put it on in time the holes drain the water out pretty quickly anyways. The two that are just cages I use to store cutoffs/uglies/firepit/donation pieces. I don't have a forklift so if I have to move a cage it has to be empty. This works out well for me because I was tearing my hair out storing kindling in 44 gallon cans which I did not want to drill holes in and it got to the point where having 12 garbage cans full of kindling was getting ridiculous. Each tote liner holds 275 gallons but I can fit 5 garbage cans full of kindling into one tote.
    Here's a few pics of my setup. I cut a little flap to have easier access to the kindling.

    Move over up-cycle Amy...up cycle shifty is in da house!
    Nice work, that looks like it will work well for your setup. Only issue I see is tare weight compared to tote frames and the way your engaging bottom pallet. By using it that way you don’t have any cross bracing below fork to prevent pallet from tipping forward if for some reason it were to get loaded/unloaded uneven or forks are not inserted all the way. Also I find it harder to engage the pallet when coming from that side especially when pallet is not on nice level ground.

    • @Back40Firewood
      @Back40Firewood  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      LOL...on the up-cycle! I know what ya mean about the cross bracing on the bottom. I might just use them that way and come in from side of splitter instead of front. If I build with sides on the other way then my front opening isn't wide enough for the splitter table (pallet is only 45" wide that way)...we'll see how it goes, might make a few mods. 😀👍🍻

      Yep I think I'll just drive the tractor in from the side instead of head on so I can put them on like that...it's just if I put the sides the other way then the pallet is only 45" wide so the splitter's table wouldn't fit.

    • @Back40Firewood
      @Back40Firewood  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yep exactly....I don't need to worry about how much is in each one, just when I feel it's full enough is when I'll stop putting in. And when I take one up to refill the stand whatever doesn't fit in can just stay right in the tote and be hauled back to storage area. 😀👍🍻

  • @stannelson2582
    @stannelson2582 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great idea but I would build them the other way. Reason is if for any crazy reason the pallet tips on the forks it’s going down in a dangerous pile. At least the other way you have a slight chance to save it.

    • @Back40Firewood
      @Back40Firewood  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep I'm thinking I might actually move them from the sides since I can drive the tractor in to pick up in front of splitter from the side. If I put the sides on the other way then the front becomes a tight fit to the splitter table...pallet is only 45" wide that way.

ABOUT THE WAY YOU APPROACH THE PALLET, BEING A DRIVER MY PERSONAL WAY TO HANDEL "STRINGERS" THE TYPE OF PALLET YOU HAVE, IS BY ENTERING THE OPISET WAY... BUT TO EACH HIS OWN... ALSO, TRY TO GO BACKWARDS... THAT WILL HELP WITH THE DISTANCE PROBLEM WITH THE FORKS... OR LIFT YOUR FORKS HIGERTHAN THE OBSTRUCTION THAT WILL ALSO MAKE YOUR LIFE A LITTLE EASIER... ALWAYS TRAVEL WITH YOUR FORKS LOW TO THE GROUND WHEN AT ALL POSSIBLE ( SORRY THATS PRETTY OBVIOUS )... HAY WHEN AN IF YOU DECIDE TO GO FOR THOSE I.B.C. • @Back40Firewood

      That was my concern as well, but they should be fine since the wood isn't all pushing out on the sides of them, only the wood 'on' the sides. I filled one up today and looks like shouldn't be a problem. 😀👍🍻
