My favorite exorcism "type" movie is The Wailing. However, The Exorcist is still the scariest to me and I also really appreciated The Exorcist 3. The Exorcism of Emily Rose is both great, but also extremely heartbreaking as well. Thanks for the video Emma! Love to the beautiful Gromit. Take care and I promise I'll stay Spooky 😊 All my best 🙏♥️
The Exorcist 3 is better than both its predecessors imo
@@JokersRevenge48 Hello Jokers! It's ashame its not talked about much, because it is a fantastic film! I had the pleasure of seeing it in the theater, when it was first released, many years ago. I don't have to tell you, just how much I jumped, at that one scene we both know! Great taste my friend. Thanks for the comment, it was greatly appreciated. All my best 🙏♥️
I read the book, “The Exorcist” when it was first released in 1971. I Had never read a book or seen a movie where the devil outmatched God and the church. It scared me to death. I was living alone. I heard some thing underneath the house and around one in the morning called my girlfriend, who had to send her husband to come to my house and to check it out and calm me down. For me, the movie is the gold standard by which other horror films are judged. I go easy on other horror because I understand that that standard is impossibly high.
I saw the film upon its release. Lee J Cobb was phenomenal as the police lieutenant. Max Von Sydow is an impeccable actor. His role in Ingmar Bergman’s, “The Seventh Seal” deserves the highest of accolades. If you haven’t seen him play chess with the devil for his life, you may find it breathtaking. If you haven’t guessed, I’m really old.
Agree with Emma, I think Amorth was right in saying that Harry Potter was the work of the devil 🤣🤣
I enjoyed this movie, it's so much better than a lot of exorcism flicks we were getting 10 years ago. Emily rose is still a top contender for a good exorcist film. I wouldn't mind to see that remade with the true story behind Annalise Michelle.🎃🎃👍👍
Deliver Us From Evil had an effect on me. I watched it at an unfamiliar theater and I got “check the back seats” spooked.
I really loved the possession (2012) and i just randomly came across it. I feel like it's a hidden gem. Favorite exorcism film is probably the exorcist iii. Which doesn't feel like an exorcism movie. But i am not a big fan of the genre, so maybe that's why i like that one :)
Love the Possession! Agree, very underrated and interesting to see the whole possession thing from a Jewish perspective.
Great video! I didn't love The Devil and Father Amorth doc (maybe I was just watching it at the wrong time), but it is interesting to see the liberties taken when turning something like this into a movie. I pretty much assume any film "based on a true story" or "inspired by a true story" basically takes the tiniest kernel of truth and then embellishes. Now for my favorites: The Exorcist, obviously. Exorcist III is pretty great too. I remember liking Dominion: Prequel to The Exorcist, but it's been a long time since I saw it, so I'd probably have to revisit it. :)
Historical fiction probably dates back to the plays of ancient Greece. Even the best documentaries carry a part of the director's vision. To tell a story that is both factually accurate and very entertaining is a very fine line. One of my favorite films of all time is "The Untouchables" (1987), yet there are very few factual events within the film itself.
Man I'm loving these specials you have been doing lately awesome work thanks for all your hard work
Hmm. I'll admit I ignored this film when it came out, mostly due to the reviews I read, and the whole "not ANOTHER exorcism movie" thing. But this makes me wonder if that was a mistake. I think I'll give it a go, especially if it's not a blindly pro-Catholic as this type of film usually is.
Wonderful, I love Lore and Backgrounds to the movies/series themselves ! 🥳✌️
Hope you and Gromit are doing good ✌️
I'm not surprised that filmmakers embellish some aspect of Father Amorth's life. If they didn't, the film might be boring and flat. Unless you have a movie like The Exorcism of Emily Rose, you have to put in the film the same things we've seen before in these types of film. This film works due to Russell Crowe's performance, the setting is decent and I thought Ralph Ineson was great in providing the voice of the demon.
All of your videos are great, but your deep dives are the very best videos you do. More please!
Thanks! Unfortunately they don’t perform well but I love doing them!
@@spookyastronauts Sorry to hear about that. Your essays, rankings, and deep dives are my favorite content of your given the amount of thought and effort that goes into them.
I love Deliver Us From Evil (Scott Derrickson, 2014), though I hate the generic title. Awesome cast with Eric Bana, Edgar Ramírez, Olivia Munn and Joel McHale
Thanks for the video, this was so interesting! Besides The Exorcist I (obviously 😁) I really enjoyed The exorcism of Emily Rose. I liked the mix between horror and courtroom drama. And Jennifer Carpenter was so good in it.
Thanks for watching!
Lovedddd this video! Super interesting!
Interesting video. Thanks Emma
This was educational, interesting, and super fun - thank you! I just saw this movie and I loved it for being such a silly good time. Interesting that they took all this real world inspiration. Of course that backfired. Still, when you can see Crowe clearly having good time, it’s pretty contagious. Thanks again for the insider exorcism stuff. Cool.
My only non traditional pic is possession but no exorcism: Demon (Polish film).
An underrated one that is hard to find is the last exorcism 2 I found that more disturbing than the first one
I’m really late to this, but definitely “the exorcism of Emily rose “ is my favorite aside from THE exorcist. Mainly because it’s a completely different take on the situation which is more “grounded” in reality.
Good discussion Emma and cool video!👉😃👈
Thanks for the Video 😀
Thanks Emma. This info makes the movie much more interesting to me. 🙂
me too hahha
@@spookyastronauts Indeed!
My favourite is Deliver Us From Evil 🖤
The true story of The Exorcist, which was revealed in a memoir by one of the priests involved, dealt with a boy in St. Louis. He did a number, though not all, of the things shown in the movie. The medical profession gave up and pretty much gave the boy to the Catholic Church saying, in effect, 'See if you can do anything.' For months the exorcism was performed and then one night a tremendous god-awful sound was heard throughout the hospital. That morning the boy was normal. I am skeptical of Possession by demons but: "There are more things, Horatio . . ."
Yes! I saw this in the doco - father amorth and the devil where they focus on the making of the exorcist at the start. really interesting!
It just dropped on netflix, that may be why people are talking about it again. I actually just watched it Saturday and thought it was good, and they defiently set up sequels without having a cliffhanger - which i like
My favorite possession movie hands down is The Exorcism of Emily Rose. To me it’s the best of both worlds, courtroom drama and horror combined. I love how it gives the audience examples of how it could be a possession or is it mental/physical illness. Jennifer Carpenter is outstanding in this film. I do love The Exorcist of course and I feel it still holds up today. But I prefer Emily Rose.
I had a good time with this film, maybe bc I had low expectations. But I thought russel Crowe was super entertaining and perfect for the role in the film. A solid 7.1/10 for me
I just watched this movie and The Devil and Father Amorth last night as a double feature and really liked it as well! It was interesting to have the juxtaposition of the fantastical fictionalized version along with a documentary about the ral figure.
As for other exorcism movies - I really loved The Last Exorcism (though not the sequel). Also, The Old Ways, which showed a possession story from the perspective of Brujería as opposed to the Catholic perspective that is featured in most exorcism movies.
I hated The Last Exorcism. The main reason was because it didn't know what what the movie was supposed to be about. Was it trickery? Was it real possession? The biggest problem was that they tried to make it both at the same time and it just didn't work. It got lost in its ambiguity and that took away from what could have been a great possession movie. And don't get me started on that ridiculous, rushed ending.
Absolutely love the Last Exorcism. Keeps you guessing and great choice of using practical effects because of the lead actress.
Great video, I really loved this movie and realized it was mostly embellishment. Crow is such a great actor I figured things about Father Amorts personality would be the biggest liberties taken. I am disappointed to hear that so much of the story is embellished but again not surprised. Still though I am looking forward to a sequel.
The Exorcist is top notch, can’t wait for the new movie to come in a couple months. Exorcism of Emily Rose is great. The Old Ways was interesting. Exorcism of God was creepy. Recently watched it and was surprised
I LOVE EMILY ROSE! and the last exorcism!
I really enjoyed this film, it got a lot of hate but I just enjoyed the ride for what it was
this is so interesting!!! they are making him famous like Ed and Lorraine 🤩
Have you heard about Late Night With The Devil? about a late-night talk show in the 70s starring David Dastmalchian, it's kind of a found footage type of movie.
Greetings from Mexico!
Is it good, I've seen it on tubi but not sure if I want to give it a go
the exorcism of emily rose is my absolute favorite with the last exorcist running a close second. exorcist iii is another favorite. i didn't really like the exorcist - for my money it doesn't hold a candle to jaws for scariness.
I love exorcism movies, my favourite will always be The Exorcist which i finally got to see on the big screen today.
Oh cool thanks bc I finally just watched it. It was entertaining. The ending would have been disappointing if it weren’t based on a true story/priest.
Now that it's on Netflix more people have a chance to watch it too.
What about The Rite w/Anthony Hopkins?
They clearly wanted to make a bombastic popcorn movie and just used this “true story” as scaffolding for their movie structure. May as well have just invented someone but then you don’t get that coveted “based on a true story” title card 😆
Haha so true
That's why idrc to see this. Hollywood thinks a religious protagonist has to be an outcast or outlier within the church and they always give then the same bad boy personality
The critique of the church and acknowledgement of mental illness was very refreshing. To me it made the movie stand out.
I see people getting upset with the Conjuring movies due to their portrayal of the Warrens and a lot of things not lining up with reality, BUT…it really is up to the viewer to do their own research and seek out the truth for themselves. A fun horror vehicle for Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga is not responsible for teaching historical truths lol. Videos like these are perfect for digging a little deeper and learning what is real and what is fiction.
A sequel? Didn't think it did well next they'll be competing with the Conjuring Universe be starting it's own universe.
Love the movie 🎥 💜👼🏻🙏🏻
Where are your bangs?
The cleansing hour !
I find it interesting that most, like 99.9% of movies dealing with exorcisms go through the perspective of the Catholic Church. From a Biblical perspective, any born again believer can perform an exorcism. No born again believer can be possessed. They can be influenced or harassed, but not possessed. I’ve also noticed how often in the movies, many of the priests don’t have genuine faith, or greatly compromise holy living. This would not be the case for someone performing exorcisms
everyone loves a priest with issues
oh wow thats fascinating, do you have a source for where that is in the bible? no one has addressed that in these interviews so crazy to hear it! thanks for adding your knowledge on the subject
@@spookyastronauts If you need an exorcism story that tones down the Christian component then I highly recommend the comic book series Outcast by Robert Kirkman.
There's actually a documentary titled "The Devil and Father Amorth" that was directed by none other than William Friedkin. Would it be at all cynical to say that most exorcism films have aped the success and legacy of The Exorcist? PS speaking of Harry Potter being the work of the devil, @hootsontheweb has a video called "Is Harry Potter Bad?" and there's an episode of the podcast Steg-Man and His Amazing Friends called "I Guess We're Talkin' About Harry Potter w/Donny Cates" that's an absolute blast to listen to.
yeah ive seen the documentary! and i rewatched it before this video too. Thats what the clips in this video are from.
@@spookyastronauts Oh cool good to know. I haven't seen it myself but was aware of it and thought it was worth sharing.
Why do you think he May have been right about Harry Potter?
It was a fun horror movie imo. It certainly could be a franchise with the ending reveal. This will probably be far better than The Exorcist reboot.
I didn't catch this flick, it just seemed hokey. Though this video and analysis is plenty entertaining and informative.
These kinds of movies should come with the disclaimer 'VERY LOOSELY based on a true story.' Also, OF COURSE 'The Exorcist ' is the best possession movie! 😄
thanks Matt appreciate your support
It's well earned. 👍
🖤
I would love to see you do this on emily rose!!!
Critics, reviewers and everyone joke that the conjuring series made the warrens christian super heroes… seems like that is now a trend 😅
❤great
So what your saying, the real father Amorth never wore sunglasses, and made quirky jokes? And here i thought he did based on 100% real life depiction in the movie lol. Without including the obvious one, The Entity 1982 and The Exorcism of Emily Rose 2005 are my favourite ones.
do you have anything at all to say
I thought it was dead camp
No one with the Holy Ghost can be possessed.
tell that to crowe haha
I don’t believe in demonic possessions. But my favorite demonic possession movies are The Exorcist and Exorcist 3. The pope’s exorcist was somehow solid.
glad you enjoyed it!
The Ecorcism of Emily Rose is the best exorcism movie! Exeter is a great low budget exocism movie as well. Both are way better than this horrible movie.
I watched Bad Things on Shudder. I cannot recommend anyone put themselves through the same experience, just a bad bad movie 😂
Russell Crowe certainly has a presence about him... (see what I did there? )☺️
This might be an unpopular opinion, but I actually really liked The Exorcism of God
The Exorcism of Emily Rose and The Devil Inside
Encountered more mental illness than people possessed....so thwy have never met the latter 🤣🤣
Does anyone take a horror film based on a true story seriously? 😂
If so I’ve got some great inland beach property to sell them!
You know The Exorcist is my #1, but #2 is probably The Exorcism of Emily Rose. Though, it has been a long time since I've seen it. Maybe I should start putting it in the hangout running. Lol.
I love that movie it’s so terrifying!!!
One of the terrible movies I watched this year. The only horror movie that I enjoyed this year so far was definitely talk to me
I cackled at the JK terf stab! Too good 😂
Yeah, how dare she tell the truth despite all the rape and death threats from deranged men. Burn the witch!
Exorcisms are fake anyway, so all that matters is that the movie is good
Unpopular opinion warning: I don’t think The Exorcist is a good movie. I don’t even think it is scary. I like The Rite and The Exorcism of Emily Rose much better due to they seem to have a more grounded tone.
cool story
Not the Harry Potter comment 😭😭... don't disagree though.
I couldn’t help myself
