  • Ok, I have voice-over going through entire video on this one. This video gives you an idea of how to go about basic repairs like rear brake replacement, rear wheel replacement, exhaust removal, transmission oil change, rear brake adjustment, cylinder head torque, adding a temp gauge, etc.

    I am an aircraft and powerplant mechanic and in the aviation industry we simply just never encounter stud or bolt breakage because we use compound every time that we touch any threads. I work on cars, boats,and etc. and run into stuck or broken bolts and studs all the time.I start all new projects by spraying all fasteners down with penitrating oil and it makes a huge difference!

    Great videos to help us novice folks who just are getting into the QT50. I just picked up a 82 on Craigslist and it runs but not great. I have ordered a few parts and hope to get it running better after getting pointers from your videos. Thanks for posting all these helpful videos.

    Hello,
    Nice video. What kind of tire have you put in the back and front.
    I also have a qt 50, rode with since 1994.
    Thanks in advance for the answer.
    Welcome
    Edmond

      I put the IRC NR 77 on the back. 14" 70/90 which is technically a front tire as per IRC but the 80/90 (technically the rear tire size for this tire) is a bit too wide although it might work without the fender. Shock would probably be the issue. You can put that same tire on the front but will need to adjust the fender stays. Kenda makes a 14" tire that is skinnier and more appropriate for the front. I think it's the kenda k261

    I am having trouble getting the rear wheel to come off. I took off exhaust, rear fender and the nut off that holds the wheel on and disconnected the brakes in case the brake pads were too tight but still no matter how hard I yank on it, wheel is on tight. Any suggests as I did not want to try to tap it off as worried about the gears getting nicked up? thanks.

    • @jackrutherford-1
      @jackrutherford-1  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think at this point, you have to tap it with a rubber mallet.

    runs well at at start up and for the first couple of miles. Once warmed up it dies every few blocks. It starts right up every time but dies after 4 blocks. Thoughts? only does it when its warm. Cleaned tank and replaced fuel line / filter

    • @jackrutherford-1
      @jackrutherford-1  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I like to use clear/transparent fuel line and filter - that way you can see if it is getting fuel and how quickly it is getting fuel. Fuel delivery issue seems to be the place to start. Could be other things. With something to catch the gas, pull fuel line at carb and see how gas flows out. Do the same right after the petcock. Also check at the drain screw on float bowl.

    • @carolineenglestad4125
      @carolineenglestad4125 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      as a test, can i run straight line out of tank (bypass petcock)

    • @jackrutherford-1
      @jackrutherford-1  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      you could. I assume you have a fuel filter on.

    I just broke an engine stud today like you talked about in this video. What do I do?? It still runs fine but feel as tho I'm lacking some compression any tips would be greatly appreciated

    • @jackrutherford-1
      @jackrutherford-1  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      So you're using 3 studs instead of 4? If so, yeah you probably lost some compression. You can test with a compression gauge or use the thumb test. I'd have to see the broken stud. there are many options. If enough of the stud is still outside of the engine, you may be able to still get it out from the outside. If not, then you'll probably have to drill it out with some titanium drill bits. If you do have to drill it out, then start with a very small drill bit at low rpms and use some WD40 or oil from time to time to lubricate the drill bit. Work your way up in drill bit size. Sometimes you have to drill all the way to the end of the stud to get it out. This can be a very long process - several hours. So if you get frustrated it better to take a break than get neanderthal on it. Here's a good tutorial www.wikihow.com/Remove-a-Broken-Bolt

      I've also had pretty good luck with these screw/bolt extractors.
      www.lowes.com/pd/SpeedOut-Damaged-Screw-Extractor/1000170531
      you drill into the broken stud with one side of the extractor and then you use the other side in reverse on your drill. It will dig into the bolt and unscrew it.

    • @jackrutherford-1
      @jackrutherford-1  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I remembered that part of my problem was a broke off the drill bit in the stud when I was trying to drill it out. Don't do that. That made things 10x harder.

    do you know what air filter I should order for my qt50?

    • @jackrutherford-1
      @jackrutherford-1  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can get a stock air filter element on ebay for pretty cheap. If you are going aftermarket - K&N RC-2540 or any 28 or 29mm mesh air filter.

    • @240heaven
      @240heaven 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      ill say it got a bit confusing for a bit last night trying to distinguish the listed diameter to what the actual diameter was, but i ordered a 1 1/4" x 3" Uni Filter today and some 8mm fuel line/filter. hoping for good fitment. thanks for the reply budday! moar vids pls

    • @jackrutherford-1
      @jackrutherford-1  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      R Weed
      Ok, I should've been more clear. The key measurement for the air filter is the diameter of the air intake on the carburetor (where the air filter would attach). So that measurement is 28 mm or 1.10 inches. the K&N I mentioned above will fit. If you go with a different air filter, you want to make sure that where it attaches to the carb is 28mm. I actually have some for sale that will fit.
