Got several really cheeky picks from this. Very much appreciated, as always. This is one channel that I feel has never budged from playing commander from the angle of fun, jank, playing what you want and not what's hot or best. Great content!
Lazotep works so well in sacrifice decks in white because you can use sand scout to ramp it out and get a sac outlet at the same time, because it is a desert
sand scout is so busted man, im always getting an archway (the desert bounce land) so it feels like 2 mana ramp and draw a land on a creature that shits out 1/1's for playing my fetch lands... i genuinely can't believe it's not an auto include in every single white deck
Not sure if you ever talked about it, but mount doom is also a criminally underplayed card. While both expensive and with a requisite, it is still a boardwipe on a land.
Fr, mount doom has won me two games being a pseudo board wipe people forget about. My playgroup runs a lot of creature removal so they never have answers for it when it counts
I had this deck where it had a secret commander of Haakon, Stromgald Scourge. One of the weaknesses of the deck was getting him exiled. So I purposely put Highmarket into the deck just so that I could sacrifice him at instant speed in order to stop him from getting sword to plowshare’d. If I still had that deck, Lazotep Quarry woulda been a slot-in
5:11 I don't think you can exile your Commander from the graveyard for the copy AND put it in the Command zone. From what I recall, if you choose to put the Commander into the command zone instead of exile, the ability will fizzle
Worth noting that several of these are very flavour specific - Lazotep is very Amonket with Zombie/Nicol Bolas/Desert, Springjack is very much about raising & eating goats in Shadowmoor (there's even a little axe in the foreground), Underdark with the d10 is D&D, Abstergo is futuristic and Assassin's Creed. They're hard to grok in general magic flavour. You mention about Springjack as goat tribal - but a lot of their low playrate is probably also because of the lack of flavour cohesion with the rest of the deck - in the same way a lot of people just don't like playing Universes Beyond cards because they don't match the general flavour of their deck. Especially when cards are mana-intensive for a sometimes pay off - I would probably play a land that better matches the deck theme in most cases.
I once used Underdark Rift on my own commander to get it out of a Darksteel Mutation. Not my favorite play of all time but allowed me to continue to play when I was basically locked out of what my deck was doing. It has great versatility for a land.
I run Underdark Rift in my B/W D&D dungeon deck and love it. Nothing feels better than watching someone debate on tutoring or waiting to draw their Rift'd card so they can have both pieces of a combo!
Agreed about Lazotep Quarry! Underdark Rift is one I had thought about using when it came out, but I was using way fewer utility lands at that time. Maybe I’ll give it another shot.
my favorite land (admittedly not budget, but definitely under played) is tower of the magistrate. no downside aside from being colorless and provides either protection or potentially stripping a vultron commander
Just realized Lazotep Quarry would go really well in Urtet. Adding colorless is useful but being able to sacrifice a Myr Token to create a colored mana is pretty handy in a pinch
These are some great picks! With the pace of cards coming out these days, it's easy to miss stuff like this. My only nitpick is that when you're making a video about budget cards, you should include the current price on screen.
I absolutely love the Thriving lands. They may not be the best duel lands, but the ability to pick the second color is amazing when I need a specific color.
I quite enjoy Underdark Rift. Then again, it's in Dynaheir, so one activation can pick off a few targets. Do need to look into Lazotep Quarry. My NOT A WOLF deck is already both tokens and deserts.
Ominous Cemetery is another good one in the same vein as Underdark Rift. Only hits creatures, but they have to shuffle it in instead. Very handy in colorless decks
@@davidhower7095 I definitely debated Ominous Cemetery in Dynaheir a couple moments. Final verdict for me was the extra permanent types were too useful and I couldn't run that many utility lands when I was working with a 3-color deck. Honorable mention goes out to HELIOS One which fulfills a similar role for decks that can manage an Energy Pool
I'm making a Teysa Karlov deck and looked at Path of Ancestry thinking "Well, I'm not playing a tribal deck, so I guess I didn't need this." But then I realized I was already playing a ton of humans, and after that I realized it's just a better dual tapland. I was also looking for creature based ramp, since I can just sac and revive them later, but white catch-up ramp always has you look for plains, and i wanted to be able to get more than just basics (Sunlit Marsh and Snowfield Sinkhole are really the only budget friendly dual Plains). But Sand Scout lets you grab deserts, which lets you get Lazotep Quarry, Forlorn Flats, or Desert of the Glorified/True if you have the first two already, and those are some nice cycle lands if you don't end up searching for them. At this point I'm wondering why anyone would run a Guildgate.
I use Lazotep Quarry along with High Market in my Atla Palani, Nest Tender deck to increase the number of sac outlets. They're great because they go in the land slot
0/1 goats, plants, etc never get any respect. I won with Cadira, Caller of the Small in a game where I started out with a single token. I had well over 60 bunnies (not including those that died along the way) by the time I closed it out-I think turn 9 or 10. That 0/1 from Springjack Pasture could be a great way to get the ball rolling in any token strategy: Marton Stromgald, Elenda, Thalisse, etc. Hats off for the Maskwood Nexus synergy. 🙌
Springjack pastures in more of a card for verry specific decks, than just tokens since essencially pay 5: make a 0/1is still quite steep. I do play it in 2 decks currently: Lower powered brudiclad, since just having more tokens is great in that deck and Volo + inspiring leader, where they become 2/3s instead
I love lazotep and abstergo. Theyre like top 2 utility lands i run outside of black, i just also dont run that much non-black though. They can feel like budget phyrexian tower and bojuka bog at times but thats exactly why i like them.
Lazotep Quarry has another very situational advantage over High Market: it's a mana ability, so it can be used in response of a split second spell and it still works with a Blood Sun in play.
I looked at lazotep for the second ability and the 3 extra mana seemed to slow. Never realized it is a sac outlet. Gotta have to get some now. Especially because it fits in the sand scout package. I kinda like Ominous Cemetery more than underdark rift because it can be used instant speed. Granted it doesn’t hit artifacts but if you want underdark you probably want both. Personally I don’t see why I should play a tapped land that taps for any Color instead of a basic in 3 or less less color decks. Would it be worth it in 4+C decks? (I don’t play those)
I originally took High Market out of my deck for Lazotep Quarry, but ended up dying by just a few points of damage too many times and went back to High Market. Well, I run both now, actually. The point is, you'll typically gain about 4-5 life a game with High Market and that is a lot bigger deal than people think in Commander.
Lazotep quarry is in my yarus morph deck because it can sacrifice a creature and the sacrifice part for mana makes it better than high market and miren the moaning well. All three ore obviously in the deck though.
All of my decks have Abstergo Entertainment in them. I have an intense hatred of graveyard decks and having a bunch of land options that do that is fantastic for me
I find it funny how many people avoid Path of Ancestry, especially in 4 or 5 colors decks, even in 3 color decks, they're more likely to play tapped trilands (like Jungle Shrine) rather than Path of Ancestry, UNLESS it's a tribal deck, where they're more likely to run both of them. (ofc, ignoring non budget decks without tapped lands lol). Beauty of PoA is how it quite often randomly works with cards which you play anyway, like... in my Chulane deck, there's so many Humans and Druids so you get "accidental" scry from time to time, even when you cast your Commander.
I have the lazotep quarry in one deck... I have the underdark rift in my roll dice mutate spellslinger deck, I play all of those except the springjack pasture but I have thought about it many times, i just struggle to find room for colorless lands those days or I would consider more of those
Juat started using Lazotep Quarry recently as well! Certainly a much better option than Grim Backwoods in my opinion- yes they do separate things, but as commander gets faster and faster it's better (again, in my opinion) to utilize cheaper methods of accomplishing what your deck wants to do.
I might add springjack pasture in my marneus Calgar deck if I have some mana open on the player before mine’s end step I can pop that get a token and draw a card! 🤔
Path of Ancestry only being in 1/5 decks does seem low - if nothing else it can trigger off your commander, so it's usually better than a Temple scryland over the course of a game.
I remember people saying Path of ancestry was gonna be the next command tower. And a LOT of 2+ color decks should run it. I run it because it's better than the generic etbt lands in 2 or more colors
I still run Path of Ancestry in the one place you probably shouldn't; Go-Shintai of Life's Origin. Shrines are not a creature type, they are an enchantment type, so with no creature type to share you never get the scry. It's still a cheap 5c enters tapped as the only downside land. I'm going to try another super cheap option in Public Thoroughfare from MKM as a 5c land in a chromatic black deck (Rev, Tithe Extractor). The 5c lands that sac unless you pay 1 are a fairly significant downside, but the newest offering may just be a light enough requirement to be worth it. Any artifact such as equipment that doesn't normally tap can be used without worry, or any artifact token you don't need right at the moment satisfies the requirement. It's no Mana Confluence, but it doesn't lose life and is also 99% cheaper while still allowing you to play MC. Pit of Offerings is another way to get a Bojuka Bog-lite sort of effect outside of black. Normally, a graveyard is targeted because of a few heaters in it anyways, so the 3 cards you get to exile is often enough to get the job done. Also from LCI, Volatile Fault can be considered for the nonbasic land hate function. You go down a land similar to Ghost Quarter, but you still get back a treasure for your trouble. If the free sac options are out of your budget and you don't like Demo Field/Field of Ruin, Fault and Tectonic Edge can still work as the cheap answers to a scary nonbasic.
Nesting Grounds in a Finality Counter Deck is heinous. I use it in Beckett Brass she comes out mills, i fetch a creature from the grave, then move a counter to an opponent
for sure underrated! It should go in every deck! Add one mana of any colour but comes in tapped is just a generally very good land, don’t even need the tribal
@@Merlewhitefire 1 colour def not, but I like it in 2 colours cuz it’s budget friendly and I don’t have fetches, so it usually acts as a normal dual land.
5:23 You aren't getting around the commander tax. You still have to pay effectively 3 + your commanders cost + sacrifice a land to "replay" your commander. If its the "second" time you are "casting" your commander it would be a 1 mana discount and a delayed increase on commander tax.
@edhdeckbuilding that was what I was trying to say in my comment. It's still acool card for the sac outlet, not sure how globally useful the reanimate will be, but its icing.

i only agree with Lazotep qaurry. For the rest of the lands the abilities are to expensive to be worth it nowdays because it is a real cost to give up colored mana.
Interesting rules text on that card. Even if you put the card on top of your library, it still counts as a discard. That could be very important for some decks where it would trigger abilities on discard.
I can agree on lazotep and abstergo but the other two are extremely bad. MDFCs are efficient on both fronts, which is better than getting two of something terrible. You'll never need a 6 mana sorcery soft removal, not even in 100 games, there's just no contest compared to 3 mana soft counter (sink into stupor) or 4 mana hero's downfall (fell the profane). Your scenarios are also never going to materialize because nobody who is capable of reading would ever swing a big creature without trample into your untapped goat maker nor try to plowshare your hakkon while pasture is untapped. Maybe I can see it in a goat token deck but even then I'll never have time to use the goat making ability and would have been better off putting altars in my spell slots to sac the goats for mana whenever I want and not all at once and in place of the normal mana my land makes. Play fountainport instead, or mirrex.
Hard disagree on path to ancestry, if you're not scrying with most of your creatures it not worth it. coming in tapped and tapping for any color was good like 9 years ago but we have way too options now for that to be worth it on its own. Even 4-5 color decks have enough to not need it.
