Hi, the Pokémon were chosen based on popularity. That is what we were told. It was not difficult for the dancers to work with two Pokémon each because we worked with that idea since day one in rehearsal. The flying Pokémon were VERY light. I wore several of them to see how they were going to be for the dancers and they were very easy because they were so light. The puppeteer that made them had worked on the Broadway production of THE LION KING and really knew how to make things light.

That's true. I agree with you 100%. I do, however, have to say that in actuality, as far as mega-children's musicals go, POKEMON LIVE! was one of the very best. Interesting stage production; as a one-time Pokemon fan, this video brought back a lot of memories of watching the anime. The puppetry seems especially intricate. I do have one question: at 12:02, how can Meowth's mouth and arms move at the same time?
Meowth had a hand-trigger device that controlled the mouth. It was much like a bicycle hand-brake mechanism. It had a hand-trigger then a wire that ran up the arm to the head. She squeezed the mechanism and the mouth moved. Voila! 😺
Thanks Chris! Clever way to move the mouth and keep both limbs free (though I imagine the performer's hand got tired!). I was an infant when Pokemania hit, but somehow, I can sense the magnitude of its influence especially in the clips of the kids (they seemed to remember the exact attacks used by different Pokemon) and in the detail of the production.
